UKT LAN 5 Preview

UKT5 is rapidly approaching and despite the absence of the top two UK clans (going by WCG results alone): 4k and omg, it looks to be perhaps the most closely contested one to date. This time it's a two day event, with the inclusion of an 'amateur' tournament offering lesser-known clans the opportunity to experience LAN gaming at good standard. The recent release of Steam and the newest CS version has caused a few upsets but UKT 5 promises some close matches whether played using 1.5 or 1.6.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints it is impractical to do an in-depth preview of both the 'professional' and all the 'amateur' clans participating, as a result this preview will only look in-depth at the sides entering the 'professional' tournament, but I will offer a brief comment on how I see the 'amateur' tournament panning out.

UKT5 Amateur Tournament

The amateur tournament looks likely to be more competitive than the professional tournament, with 6 or 7 clans all perhaps capable of competing in the professional event the day later. With only 2 qualifying spots available I think the teams who prepare most out of these 6 or 7 will emerge victorious. Of these 6 or 7 clans the three I see as being the 'favourites' would have to be SFAL, qTp and resonance. All teams with experienced and capable LAN players.

UKT 5 Professional Tournament

After a disappointing performance at WCG, ONE has tinkered with their line-up for UKT 5. How confident are you that you can win the event?

Kid: Hmm, don't know, we haven’t really practiced much but it's more or less the team of old so if we play well on the day we'd have a good chance of upsetting Dark0r and (bum)chums :P.

Do you see anybody but i-es really challenging you?

We can't forget dist they are a threat.

Who do you see as being a possible dark horse clan outside the so-called 'top 3'?

Pacifico, don’t know about all 5 of them but if they are as good as Aco and Flavas they could pull some upsets. That's if they get some teamplay together :P not saying that ONE have any :C . Puk-Kai too, they are cool guys and underrated.

Any clan that you would love to see fall flat on their faces?

Don't really think I'd like to see any clan fall flat on their face, maybe just a few individuals though, mentioning no names.

Do you think KhAoS' obsession with Rocky is normal?

I pity the fool.

My Say: With the recent return of Strikes and in particular Righteous, ONE seem to have perhaps their strongest ever line-up. Despite, losing to omg! at WCG many still see them as the UK's number 2 clan. If ONE practice and are in the right frame of mind they are capable of winning this tournament, but if they are not on top on their game then there are other sides who can beat them.

Infinity-esports

I-es have been tipped by many to be the side perhaps with the best chance of toppling 4k. Do you think that beating 4k, in the long term, is a likely possibility?

Aku: Anything is possible and hopefully if we train enough we can try to give them a run for their money. I’m sure they'd enjoy a bit of competition too :D

Looking at UKT5 in particular, you guys must go into the event as favourites alongside ONE, obviously you'll be aim for first place? But whom do you think will provide you with the toughest test?

ONE definitely. Their new line-up is quite a scary proposition and sadly we won’t be going to UKT with the 5 that play the most together online. Hopefully it will make for a very good game. Greg has just started uni and doesn’t have any internet at the moment so practice is a bit hard till he sorts that out.

Obviously that will definitely hold you guys back. Looking at the teams outside the 'top 3' who do you think are most capable of either upsetting one of the big guns, or performing well above expectation?

I think O:i are due a good showing. Hopefully disturbed will cause a few upsets too then there’s zebra's and section7, bit tricky really.

Is it true that AnNum fears Gaz?

Haha absolutely don’t we all?

It has been rumoured that GaZ has threatened to 'place' a monitor over Annum’s head. Obviously, this would be a major blow as AnNum surely is one of your key players?

Maybe a little but he has no brain anyway, so as long as his vision isn’t impaired, we should be ok :P

My Say: I-es come into this event tipped by many as the favourites and their recent display against illu in the EuroCup showed immediately what they are capable of. The activity of luck1ng will be vital to whether I-es win this event. When they are on top and confident I-es will finish off most teams, but if they go behind and began to struggle perhaps they will fall to pieces. I can only really see ONE preventing I-es from winning, and tip them only due to their experience together as team.

Disturbed have been around a long time, and out of the so-called 'top 3' seem to have the most stable line-up. How much of an advantage does this give you? And how do you think you will do at ukt5?

The poog: In any normal circumstance I suppose it would help, but with waz moving house for uni and rich falling in love we haven’t really practiced much at all. An opportunity wasted I suppose :)

It does seem to be a matter of who prepares best will come out victorious. I was impressed with disturbed at WCG but do you feel you have what it takes to make the step up and compete with the likes of I-es, 4k and one?

I think you need to restructure your question :), competing with 4k would probably be about 5 steps up were as competing with one and I-es I believe we are already there.

Obviously you fancy your chances against both ONE and I-es. Would have a particular map that you would consider would give you the best chance of success against these two sides?

Yes I suppose there is a certain map we are best at, or rather maybe 2 or 3. I'd rather not reveal our "better" maps, don’t want anyone knowing our strengths now do we :p

Looking at the teams outside the 'top 3' who do you think are most capable of either upsetting one of the big guns, or performing well above expectation?

Hmmmm, choke seemed a decent team at the last event. I’m not entirely sure of the line-up to be honest but from what I can remember s7 are there, if they are as good as they was last time around they aren't to be taken lightly. Also legend are off and they have a lot to prove after the outing at WCG, granted it was their first LAN and we all know how tough that can be sometimes.

Any clans you would like to see fall flat on their faces?

Haha interesting question, I wasn't too pleased with the attitude of certain i-es members regarding who will win ukt5 so I suppose I'd chuckle a little if they did. But hey you know me, I love everyone and everyone loves me :D

Who do I think is mental, hmmmm. I'd have to go with fellow clan mate headshot man, he’s proper crazy I tell thee plus he’s welsh, imagine the possibilities.

My Say: Disturbed have without doubt the potential to do damage, not only here, but in future UK LAN events. They have been up there for a while and now it is perhaps time for them to really make the step up and defeat with the likes of ONE on a regular basis. Their performances on LAN are always of a high standard and they now have the experience to go with some brilliant individual skills. They are certainly capable of beating all the sides participating, but whether they can defeat ONE and I-es remains to be seen.

Zebras

Zebras come into this event tipped by many to be pushing for a top 5 finish at least. What are your personal aims?

Sluggeh: Not to get lost at the train station again! winning a match would be a nice start and anything from there is always a bonus :p

It's just been announced that Frank Bruno has been sectioned under the mental health act. Anyone in UK CS you feel should also be considered?

I think there is plenty yes, starting with people like gaz, and finishing with people like Neil "naked" Yates.

Well, Neil is a bit of legend. I’m surprised a 'top' clan hasn’t taken him on aboard.

A thoroughly sound bloke but it could be related to his consistent minus scores, we may never know.

Indeed, outside the 'top 3' who do you think will perform best?

I think pacifico could be fairly strong, likewise for section 7.

Are there any particular maps that [z] really fancy their chances on?

Hopefully we're fairly sound across most maps, there are some maps that we enjoy more than others but I don’t think we're better on them.

Any clans you'd like to see fall flat on their faces?

I'll be political and just say that it would be amusing to see it happen to any of the clans who have behaved like twats against us.

My Say: Zebras contain a bunch of talented players, who if they gel will definitely be a match for any UK side. They contain some experienced campaigners in Fred and Kam, along with some fresh blood like Fez and Silence. If they practice and perform they could possibly upset one of the 'top 3' given circumstance. But despite Sluggeh’s modest aims anything less than top 6 will be a big disappointment in my eyes.

Choke have been quite impressive in their two LAN appearances up to date, despite a lot a criticism before hand. How well do you expect to do at ukt5?

SIE: A 4th place finish would be nice which I think we could achieve if we play well on the day.

You seem confident, whom do you see as your biggest threats to a top 4 finish?

People are expecting the top 3 to be I-eS, ONE and Disturbed, who am I to disagree :) Also, I’d have to say, zebra's, section7 and Pacifico.

It seemed from watching you guys at UKT 4 that the two games you lost were perhaps down to nerves. Would you say you are better prepared for UKT 5 than you were for UKT 4?

Our iM game we just got of to a bad start as for our lastchance game I'm not going to comment on that TBH! As for preparation this time we are just carrying on like we normally do trying to get in as many games a night as we can but with just the LAN team.

Would you like to see anyone in particular fall flat on their faces?

Nah I’ve got nothing against any of the teams going, just too bad Elemental aren’t going then yeah I would have said them.

My Say: Choke’s strength lies in their teamplay, despite perhaps not having the individual skills of top clans they do have some talented players and will work for each other. Choke have proven that on LAN they can challenge the best clans and should be prepared for this event also. I’m going to tip them to pip Pacifico for 5th on temperament and I cant see them falling to make to top 8.

Pacifico proved at UKT 4 that they have the potential to challenge even the top UK clans, how do u feel you'll perform at ukt5?

Flavas: Hopefully we can be a challenge, but we have just had another line-up change and we are rebuilding the teamplay, were hoping for a top5 finish.

Apart from the obvious 'top 3' who do you think are most likely to perhaps prevent you from a top 5 finish?

Don’t know really any can beat anyone on any given Sunday and LAN is LAN you never know, so I wouldn’t like to comment on that.

Indeed, do you think you could possibly cause an upset against one of the 'top 3'?? If so, who and on what map?

Who knows, anything can happen on LAN.

My Say: Pacifico are one of those sides who on their day can beat anyone. Similar to I-es, that when they get control of a game they seldom through it away but when they are up against it they seem to give up and start squabbling. The introduction of Aco and kronic as added more talent, the question is will they be a team or a team of individuals?

Section7

Section7 provided us with a huge shock, by beating omg! at ukt4, many thought they would go on and begin to challenge the top clans regularly. What has held you back?

Kae: Yeah we have had a lot of trouble with members and other issues within the clan. Also I was on holiday for about 2 months after UKT 4 so the clan went inactive.

So how do you feel coming into UKT 5? What type of finish are you looking to achieve?

Obviously we wouldn’t like to get beaten by any unexpected clans, like OMG! did by us ;) so in the top 5 would be good enough for me.

There're quite a few sides capable of a top 5 finish, with ONE, I-es and Disturbed almost certain to be there or there abouts, who do you think will perhaps prevent you from a top 5 finish?

I expect i-es and one to be 1st and 2nd obviously, we would all love to play again Disturbed as we missed them at ukt4, that should be a good match! Also I’d like to see how Pacifico performs this time round.

Is their any particular clan that you would like to beat?

I'd love to beat dist, we got such a lame CSGN result against them due to us being inactive for so long. I'd love to give them a good thrashing ;D

My Say: Section7 are difficult to predict. On the fact that they have been inactive for some time I have predicted them a 7th place finish but they are, as they showed against omg! Capable of beating the big clans. If they practice well, a top 5 finish is likely. If Kardy is as good on LAN as he is online, then section7 may have found a real gem.

SCEE

SCEE came a respectable 6th place at ukt3, giving ONE a very close game on dust2. Since then you line-up is different. How do you see yourselves doing here?

DK: The obvious changes are the loss of KaM/Fred, that said, I’ve brought in Brorjace/Munk/abs/beardeh. So the only swap is kam/fred for bror/? (whoever is fifth). I think we can/should do well again. This time I don’t want to get 1/11 and give ONE a dicking

Talking of ONE, do you think they are the clear favourites for this event? If not, who do you think are?

Sure people thought they was clear faves to beat omg at WCG. I think i-es can give them a good game and dist have quality. Then you have possibly 3 teams below them tightly packed and now it seems you have a bunch of teams below that, quite closely matched, can only make for good games, and HUGE flames.

Are there any teams you would expect, outside the top 3, to perform well?

Out of the 'unknowns' I expect/hope the 'herd' do well, clan [z]>

Nope, I just hope NONE of SCEE do.

Haha, gaz like the use of monitors in his scraps from what I can tell. I condone punishment if it's called for. So if annum or anyone else has done something hiding behind their PC, a reality check never hurts anyone. My dad used to spank me for being nasty to people you know :P

My Say: Bjorjace will be an invaluable addition to a weaker SCEE side following the loss of Kam and Fred. Despite, this is still see SCEE being a side most clans would like to avoid. They are a number of 6 or 7 sides who are capable of a top 5 finish, particularly with adopted SCEE’r m0rph turning out yet again. DK’s side will always fight to the death but I just see the likes of Zebras and Pacifico as having too much for them.

Despite some excellent performance online, O:i never seem to perform on LAN. I know you guys aren’t ‘sol’ but what do you think is the main reason for you under performing on LAN?

Labib: I honestly believe that the reason we haven’t performed on LAN is due to plain bad luck. I cannot think of one game on LAN that we have been simply outplayed, also in every game there always seems to be one large error which costs us BIG. So should we cut that mistake out and we get the rub of the green we can be a force on LAN.

Agreed son. How do you think you’ll fare at this event? Top 5 perhaps?

Well, it depends on availability I believe that with the right team and with the proper preparation if only online I think a top 5 finish is not out of the question.

Who do you think will perform above expectations in the tournament?

F**k knows who's gonna do well I don’t keep up with other clans just shoot mans in da face.

Well, to be honest Ryan I don't chat 2 many ppl out of O:I, most of the top clan members are prolly sound guys but they don’t gimme the time of day cos they don’t know me name but I spose that’s the way it is, so I can't really comment.

My Say: Anyone who has met O:I will know that they are a great bunch of talented CS players who, just simply, have never got the rub of the green on LAN. I’ve predicted O:I 9th because they do seem to be rather hit or miss and this could be down to their dynamic attacking style which is pretty single dimensional. If they could add some slower attacks to fall back on if things don’t go to plan then they this could be the LAN for O:I to really shine.

After, what could only be described as a poor performance at WCG, you must be looking forward to prove quite a few people wrong at UKT5. How do you think you will fare?

Crowder: Well we haven't practiced at all, we haven't played one game since WCG. Silicon just left the team so that’s caused a few internal problems. I don't think we'll fair that well, but we'll have to see how the cookie crumbles.

Indeed, I'm sure it will, then again I should imagine that most clans will not have begun practicing. What do you think would be a reasonable finish for you?

Top5 would be great but I seriously doubt we're capable of getting that at the moment, to win at least one game would be nice, so we can go home with some feeling of accomplishment :D However small and insignificant that maybe.

Legend have been tagged as 'online heroes'. And your under par showing at WCG has only strengthened this view. Surely, this would motivate you to prepare and not leave anything to chance?

Online Heroes, yeah I was speaking to a few people at WCG about that, really amusing, but it doesn't bother us, we're just out to play CS, despite what people may think of us. The motivation has died down since WCG so we've been having a few talks with a few teams about possible sponsorship movements and team re-shuffles, hopefully (if this goes through) our motivation shall rise to new heights, but only time will tell.

Are there any teams you'd expect to really shine at ukt5?

ClanONE, I-es and disturbed (if they're all attending). I'd like to see disturbed go through to the finals, I like the team and Geordie has definitely stepped up his game. But yeah, any of those three teams really.

My say: After a disappointing WCG, Legend will be looking to bounce back and try and prove them at LAN. There is no doubt they have some experienced and skilful players but lack as a team lack LAN experience, and it seems their preparation has been hindered by Silicon’s departure. The addition of bagz, who has performed quite well on LAN in the past, is a bonus, which should, perhaps, propel Legend above their prediction here. If they can match there performances online then Legend could be a dark horse to go far in the event.

Forsaken

Do you think that 5th place at ukt2 was due to perhaps a weakened turn out? And where do you think you'll place here?

Atemi: The 5th place was defiantly against weaker teams, but the games we did win we won comfortably don’t think we lost more than 4 rounds when we won and it was our first proper LAN and we practiced for it unlike wcg which consisted of 4 pcws in the 2 weeks prior to it. With this event I think we could maybe finish around the middle, but with a new player coming in only 2 weeks before and with me moving into university the weekend before. It will all depends how much practice we can get in.

Who do you see as possible dark horses, perhaps performing better than expected?

I think it would have to be zebras, all seem to be good players and I’ve played with fez (kok) before so if they are all as good as him then they will defiantly be a tough team to beat, also choke I expect to do well.

Who do you think will emerge victorious?

I can't really say, maybe i-es, although they seem like arrogant bastards, so I hope its ONE or Dist, although i-es must be confident for a reason so I think they will win in the end.

Anyone you'd like to come unstuck on LAN ?

Yes of course, but don’t want to get smacked on the day so I won't say who, although I hope brenje falls off a chair or something on the Saturday.

Recently Frank Bruno has been sectioned under the mental health act, is their any UK CS player who you think should be considered?

Yeah, the`danneh for certain, he has many issues which make him unstable, mainly problems containing his anger, ppl might know him to be an online hardman but at our last boot camp some 12 year old knocked his mouse by accident and the`danneh beat seven shades of shit out of the poor fella.

My Say: Forsaken are probably, by their own admission, one of the weaker sides going into this tournament. But as they showed at UKT 2 if their opponents don’t perform they are capable of beating them. The loss of ShaQ is a big blow, but I’m sure they wont let themselves down and do have the added bonus of playing together (minus Ripper) for a long time. They will be hard pressed to make the top 8, but a top 10 finish is not out of the question. There are friendly, solid players and I wish them well.

I don’t want to see anyone lose just want to see good matches but it will be interesting to see how O:I get on again.

I-es, but I'd like to see ONE win it cause they aren’t cocky c**ts.

What do you think to Frank Bruno being section under the mental health act?

Think it’s about time... all those pantos must have taken their toll over the years.

My Say: North & South have been around the UK scene for a long time and have proven to be skilled individuals. Their invite to Intel Masters, where they did ok, is testament too this. They do seem to be rather inactive and for this reason, even with practice, I can see them struggling to beat many of the sides on show. However, rumours do suggest a couple of surprise mercs may show, and if so, my prediction will look silly.

Seno: Erm, OK I guess, as long as not the bottom lol, but we wont have time to practice for ukt5 as uni is starting for me and wont have no practice at all same with most of the other guys

m0rph, he’s my archenemy who pisses me off greatly. Hope he falls over n breaks his finger he uses for shooting cum. (Personally, I think Seno should be sectioned, what a nutcase ;) )

My Say: WCG was the first time I had witnessed Puk-Kai and they performed well above expectations and thus cannot be taken lightly coming into UKT 5. If teams do, then Puk-Kai, with the addition of emfive will cause an upset. I do see them struggling here, however, and going home with a win, I should imagine, will be seen as a success in their eyes.

2s2p lost to 4k at WCG, obviously in a single elimination tournament this was bad luck. How do you see ukt5 going for yourselves?

Pyroux: There are a lot of good clans there, but there are a few clans we think we can match and give a good game, we have boot camp lined up so Hopefully we will be prepared for the LAN, we would like to beat a couple of respected clans, we have the players and hopefully the will/tactics to do that.

What would you class as a good finish then? Top 8?

Top 8, this is our first ukt, so compared to the rest we will be inexperienced so top 8 plus would be good.

Any clans in particular we should keep our eyes on?

I-eS, are gonna be very good, I've heard their line up and damn it's gonna be good :) I think they will win it, no one to challenge, maybe disturbed but I think I-I-es have that extra edge and obviously 2s2p .

Recently Frank Bruno has been sectioned under the mental health act, is their any UK CS player who you think should be considered?

Yeah a few, 1) SFAL Frantic for drinking like 19 whiskeys at lunch time (during WCG) :S 2) Me cuz i’m a right animal on my night off *grrrr* and 3) Fightclubclan - naz, cuz he looks like Donnie Darko... Go check his pic it's weird.

My Say: 2s2p have been around, on and off, for a while and do have plenty of I-series experience. They did well to beat Forsaken in the WCG qualifiers and are a decent looking side. I do fee that they perhaps lack the skill of many of the other clans participating, despite all being relatively seasoned players. Having said this, they are a local team and do seem to be practicing hard with a boot camp planned. If this goes well, I can see 2s2p exceeding their predicted (soz lads, had to be someone) last place. I’m sure they would love to prove me wrong and I hope they do.

That concludes my preview of the upcoming UKT 5 and it does promise to be an exciting event with so many evenly matched sides. Northampton is a fantastic venue and I should imagine the tournament will go well. Steam may decide otherwise. Lastly, I wish all the clans participating good luck and to have fun. Off to uni now, so I hope you enjoy my little *cough* preview Hopefully, I’ll see some of you down there.
