Well according to The Inquirer there were a lot of problems that just came together and turned the place upside down. As a result the main CS tournament has been cancled and replaced with a showdown of grudge matches. Most notably 4Kings vs TAG or for those of you with weak minds, Intel vs AMD.
So what went wrong?
These are a short version of what Charlie Demerjian thought went wrong at CXG. To read the full article visit here.

get a brain, the competition wasnt badly organised at all (maybe the cabling - but that got done on time)....
If valve choose to release a 3mb patch only through the Steam network what do you expect????
And if they didnt show up to manage one of their largest (in terms of good PR and actual numbers) client implementations (Steam) in one place ever, with a promised content server - then what do you expect also?
For an old school player I thought you would have had more sense /shrugs
looks like CXG got some really bad support and got screwed by Valve who are right now (if you read the report) only 2 blocks away from the event....... [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I'd assume the remaining $80,000 is gonna go towards compensating the teams that have travelled to cxg. If not the teams that attended should sue the s*** outta cxg. Not only have they wasted their own/sponsers money but they've lost out on a possible $100,000 and valuable experience at the highest level, especially for lesser known teams such as our own TAG and I-eS. When was the last time their was a uk lan on the same scale during the steam era?
Lets face valve couldnt give a monkeys about CS they are just using it as a guinnie pig (spelling) to test steam before their next generation games.
Lets look at the track record and general competence (hl2 getting stolen anyone? ), they denied any blame with the meta mod bug. when it was there lack of programing skillz.
They have managed to make an 8 year old game engine (which was made before pentium2's were even on the market) into complete s***e. tell me why 1.6 cs is about 40fps slower than 1.5? Steam should not need 40fps worth of cpu power to run in the background while your playing cs.
They took it apon themself to change the netcode for the game engine which tbh is awfull now.
As for cheat prevention The man who made the engine (carmack) decided himself that the only way to get rid of cheats was to employ a fulltime company for the job (punkbuster) but valve decided they knew better.
While CXG where having these mass problems their were valve employ's only 2 blocks away and they couldnt bother their arse to come help.
And to top it all off they have the cheek to charge for the use of cs now on lan. With doing so you would believe that their would at least be improvments to a game which was made by someone in their spare time. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

personally i dont mind the idea of steam's regular updates although network problems are a problem. the fps bugs with 1.6 r just stupid though, i got 2.53ghz 1024ddr + a gf4ti but still get major fps drops in smoke [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

lol yeah valve can't code only managed to produce the best selling fps ever and the extremely heavily modified engine youve been devoting your life to for the past <insert however many years youve been playing>, AND coding a huge new engine from scratch for hl2
TOTAL LACK OF SKILLZ THERE VALVE
whine whine whine
damn those valve goons for releasing a patch to cater for the general public, god forbid that someone didnt think that the SUPPOSEDLY BEST ORGANISED LAN EVENT THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN would be able to afford a connection that could download a 3 meg patch... 3 MEG, jesus f***ing christ, that's tiny, even if you had 200 pc's on a 1mbit line itd take 1 1/2 hours to update
they had to reinstall their whole f***ing network through their own faults, not valves, and now theyre just trying to shift the blame onto the company who produces the game that all you moaning b******s have been playing for years for essentially free (what other games have given you that much enjoyment for £30 or whatever you paid?) ... and even when you go bla bla gonna boycott cs, i hope valve get sued youll STILL continue using steam, youll STILL keep playing their game, youll STILL buy hl2
obv steam hasnt been the greatest success and yes its being used as a guineau pig, but i dont know about you but id rather have a few months of patchy service for a game that is OVER FIVE YEARS OLD so that they can prepare for hl2 so that its near flawless
stop your f***ing whining, when it comes to it cxg has absolutely no bearing on your life, so why should you give a s*** if the events gone ballsed up or not [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

The 8 year old game engine should simply not be f***ing up international events like this, sure CXG were ambitious with their broadcasting aims, but to evolve esports furether u gotta push the limits of what's already been done. Releasing a patch before CXG, when valve were already in contact with CXG about the event is absolutely ridiculous, and nyo providiing on site support as they said they would is outrageous.
The whole Steam idea has f***ed over this possibly amazing event, and Valve deserve to pay for it. They supported the game totally up to 1.5, until they decided to use the CS community as a guinea pig for Steam.
Reminder: Valve are not behind CS, Gooseman and Cliffe, two average programmers with an ambition, are behind it. It all went tits up when valve decided that supporting HL for the community warranted some income from them. The day that happened, the greedier they got, and this bulls*** f***up Steam was born. Now they are just taking the p***.
If I were CXG CEO I'd sue valve and everything they are for all they are worth.
I am very drunk at the moment after a night out but I am very p***ed off I didn't get to watch some quality CS games tonight (b4 going out).
I despise valve for making Steam. It really is the cause of 80% of the problems experiences at CXG. I feel sorry for those guys. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

remember half the bugs that are present in 1.6 did not exist in 1.5 and are purely the result of sub-standard beta testing.
I think if a bunch of amateur programmers were behind steam i could give them a break, but valve have simply gotten on a bandwagon with counterstrike, and even half life. Remember they never made their own physics or graphics engines, all they did was essentially modify quake1. We should expect professional results from a so called professional company who are charging money for their product. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

From a company point of view would you spend thousands of pounds paying programmers to work on a product making you no money or use it as a testbed for online distribution software thats going to be a huge product in a few years.
Valve owe CXG nothing unless they had contracts stating some sort of gauranteed support. End of the day releasing the patch was unfortunate but CXG f***ed their own network & the virus protection. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
