The 2006 World Cyber Games grand finals will be held in Monza, Italy. In a press release on Gamesindustry.biz it was revealed that the WCG Committee turned down bids from Sydney, Australia, Cancun, Mexico and Shanghai, China in favour of the North east Italian city.
Monza becomes the 4th host city of the WCG, but the first time the event has been held in Eruope. 800 of the world's gaming elite are expected to descend upon the city when the grand finals commence in Autumn next year. Monza's mayor Mr. Michele Faglia, has said the following:
Our City Administration is deeply interested in any event related to the younger generation and in which youths are involved with sport and cultural activities. That's why we are thrilled and greatly honoured that Monza has been chosen as the host city for the world's largest e-Sports event next year. Being the first European City to host the World Cyber Games Grand Final will help us strengthen the relationship between the young generation and these new electronic activities.
To clinch the deal Monza offered its famous Autodromo Nazionale F1 Grand Prix racing circuit. Which the WCG proudly notes as being "the first time the Grand Final is held in a racing circuit, promising a more thrilling atmosphere for gamers and spectators".
Previously host cities include: Seoul - South-Korea (2001, 2003), Daejon - South-Korea (2002), San Francisco - USA (2004), Singapore (2005).
