Check the wording very carefully they have left it very open: Yes, Steam is really free. Steam also provides access to several free products and services, like the dedicated game server, instant messaging, the game server browser, etc. And if you've already bought Half-Life or one of the other Half-Life family of games, several add-ons are available via Steam for no extra cost. 	critter 11:50 3/10/2003	if youre on about the myg0t email from chris newcombe, its about peer-to-peer steam (p2p), not pay-to-play (also p2p). think you might have misunderstood/read someone saying p2p and mis-interpreting it for pay-to-play. in this email its the valve guy saying that due to crippling server bandwidth and stuff theyre going to implement more verification features to ensure ppl have bought hl, and by using p2p therell be more bandwidth freed up so everythings faster etc. and as marcus rightfully points out if you buy the full retail version you get hl2 multiplayer and everything free. Fact that the game has s*** loads of problems with registry, netcode etc. is probably due to there never being a p2p system in place in the first place. p2p = bad, but if u can pay a one off 30 quid, or even 35, to have a game which most people on here play to excess hours, is worth it.
