It turns out that yesterday's Steam outage was due to a DDOS attack on Valve:
We had an outage today caused by an outside problem (Denial of Service attack) bogging down the Steam system. Things are back up for Steam, however Friends will stay down this evening (Valve time) and should be back up tomorrow.Sorry for the inconvenience.
This raises a few interesting questions. Was the attack simply directed at Valve? Or was it an attempt to sabotage the first day of CXG? Were the rumours (Steam being shut down till HL2 came out) that were being spread on IRC yesterday started by the same people that did the DDOS attack, knowing that the Steam website was down and no one would be able to check their truth?
