Professional Gaming: Myths, Facts and Reality

Posted by appz at 21:50 9/3/2003.

Hot off the press - Myers has just written a new article focusing on the past, present and future of Pro-Gaming. The article offers a strong insight in the workings of Pro-Gaming, the driving forces behind prospering e-sports athletes and the possible future of e-sports. The article features questions to clan and community favourites such as ex-4kings leader The Genius, leader of top CS clan ONE ONE|Righteous and eSport Pro owner Paul Meakin. Here's a snippet:

As I looked up from my magazine for a second I finally noticed a common feature in every man in this carriage. They were miserable! All of them, they were clearly fed up of their £20,000 - £50,000 jobs, sitting at a desk behind computers all day, and most of all, they were miserable with a 30 - 60 minute train journey they had to make both ways every day.

Is this really what my generation wants to go to university for? Is this a satisfying, fulfilling way to live life? Did these people really expect their life would turn out like this when they were of my age (17)?

Before I go completely philosophical on you all here, I want to consider something. Could it be possible that gamers are driven towards professional gaming as a new and exciting outlet to avoid becoming their parents?

I think alot of people are living in a dreamworld that is created by all of these "esports agencys" that have popped up. They promise the world but seem to deliver nothing more than dissapointment. I myself have had hundreds of sponsorship requests from clans eager to get somehwere. I have one that i got today, it went something like this :

<person> lo do u do sponsorship
<me> soz no (im sorry but im not in the habit of giving stuff away for jack)
<person> comon man i know if we just get a server we can make it big, we just need to practise [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

He then muttered something and seemed quite dissapointed, i kinda feel s*** because he was very nice and well mannered but this is life :)

Im not having a poke at any specific "esports agency", but i dont think gaming is big enough in this country for organisations of this type.

For the majority of clans making money is just NOT going to happen, even for the biggest of clans its not all peachy, its still very much a hobby in my opinion - because i dont think anyone is earning enough money to sustain themselves via gaming. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Well I'm not sure that the sport does not need an "agency" of some type, but teams do need help, no matter how big or small. Maybe esp started with the right goals but we soon realised that so much damage had been done to many of the potential sponsors and now they just will not support teams. So a slight rethink has been done and now many teams get help in one shape or another.

The person asking for a server that Lithium mentioned was me (j/k), no that is typical of many pm's and emails I get, actually that one was prob better than most.

The e-sport scene in relation to becomming a true sport or a pro sport is a way off, but some of us are in it for the long haul, like some teams are.

Only time will tell what hand fate is going to deal our sport next! [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

What concerns me is companies springing up saying "We only take sponsorship requests from clans within x esports agency". It promotes monopolisation. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

in time, years most probably, esports will get bigger: with more people going broadband and with more [new] hardware companies aiming to earn a reputation, and the best way to achieve that is by sponsorship. look at F1, decades ago all the cars were in team colours and it wasnt a lot more than a hobby, just like cs is now. then the sponsorship orgy that followed made it into the billions-of-$-a-year sport. look at michelin, you all know that they produce high quality tyres, you wouldnt know that if there was no F1. maybe something similar will happen with esports... Yeah, but F1 pretty much has the entire car industry to back it up, whereas the computer industry is a lot more fragmented. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

F1 has very little of the actual car industry .. ie. GM (yanks) .. but then they have thier own motorcars with less technology so its not so boring ... hopefully TeG the most boring clan in the wrodl to watch will lose their sponsorship and become the p0rnstars they were born to be :) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

the facts are: loads of big and small companys want to give money, in the hopes of getting into the massive gaming sector, however they know very little about online gaming, with top clans, lans ect. so the money gets held back or given to s***ty companys pretending to "help esports".

With 1 note on the "pro" gamers bit. i am a pro golfer and yet i have made alot more money from cs than golf at present, so how am i not a pro gamer to ? =]

Pro gaming is here and its only gunna bet bigger, sooner or later online gaming will go main stream and when this happens the large companys will know where to invest and the money will be massive. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

The F1 analogy used in d0ly's context is a good one, but delving into the technical aspect is not too clever. 2 litre 800bhp engines do not relate to your average punter's Ford Mondeo :-) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

exactly they know veyr little about gamers, and you'd probably find that where there are compnaies involv in gaming there is a 'gamer' within the company, someone who can influence the decision wether or not sponsorship will be given. for exmaple 4k, there's most probably someone within intel who happens to be a gamer and who knows the potential of investing in a top team. expert implies that u are at the top of ure field, being 100% honest , no matter how well uve done in the uk, there are a lot of better players elsewhere in the world (its possable to argue that u were an expert if the uk was the best cs nation in the world, but it obviously isnt). thats anot official rankings, thats a subjective opinion pole more than an accurate one, if u actualy watch demos of all the top players, ull see they are a completely different class to lucking. 4k have been lucky in a way not to have to play some of the top clans in the cpl untill later rounds.

There have been many good clans (some arguably better than 4k like team9) whove had bad luck and had to play eol sk 3d etc really early on. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
