Since the rumours were spilt about Steam becoming a 'pay 2 play' service, there has been a wave of panic as well as a surge of uproar within the community. Gabe Newell of Valve has kindly replied to an email from FragBite.com to confirm that these rumours are indeed only rumours. Here is what he had to say:
Steam supports a wide variety of billing mechanisms. It also acts as a back-end for the retail game. If you buy the game via one-time purchase (i.e. either via Steam or via retail box) then you don't have to pay again to play on-line

half the reason these rumours fly about is because even 'reputable' community websites think its cool to post bulls*** and have ppl kick up a fuss. even with this i bet some people still believe you'll have to pay for steam in the future. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
