Steam p2p rumors cleared

Since the rumours were spilt about Steam becoming a 'pay 2 play' service, there has been a wave of panic as well as a surge of uproar within the community. Gabe Newell of Valve has kindly replied to an email from FragBite.com to confirm that these rumours are indeed only rumours. Here is what he had to say:

Steam supports a wide variety of billing mechanisms. It also acts as a back-end for the retail game. If you buy the game via one-time purchase (i.e. either via Steam or via retail box) then you don't have to pay again to play on-line

This news is likely to anger the Counter-Strike gaming community as everyone has already purchased a copy of Half-Life or even Counter-Strike itself. How this affects future Counter-Strike or any Half-Life multiplayer competitions remains to be seen, but it cannot be good. Remember once ID began to charge gaming events for Quake 3 the game was dropped by both the CPL and WCG and the community faded away. With the CPL adopting Halo for the PC next year and rumours that WCG will be using MOHAA to replace CS, could this be the final nail in the coffin for CS? and none of that is cleared up.
