Two days ago Recon of CyberXGaming posted an email he received in regards to Steam on LAN at GotFrag. Here is what it said:
Valve is offering a Steam games installation DVD-ROM for Cyber Cafe managers. If you manage a gaming venue and you'd like to receive the disk, email us at cafe@valvesoftware.com. If you're one of the cafe managers who has already written to us requesting this DVD, rest assured that your email has been received and you will soon receive the disk. They are still being manufactured, and will be sent out as soon as they are finished. Very soon, we will post more detailed information for Cyber Cafe managers about the official Valve Cyber Cafe Program, including information on pricing (hint: $10 per computer per month & you don't have to buy the retail software), technical instructions for setting up Steam in cafes, security info, etc.
Obviously quite a costly solution. The question remains as to how the LANs taking place without a Internet connection will work.

When did Cliffe and co. become part of the "omg just can't make enough money" brigade? You'd have thought they might've been satisfied with how well they've done out of CS in the last few years considering it only started off as a bit of fun?

Buying seperate copies of the game (1:1 or 1:6 I dunno),
or,
Paying $10 a month and getting unlimited copies.
What's wrong with that? [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

It seems you either buy the game on its own for each comp, or pay $10 a month for each one. Doesn't seem much of a deal to me, but still, it's a deal. :s [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

netcafe managers have to pay for 1 copy of half life per pc as it is at the moment, and if this is for JUST steam (inc with steam is cs/dod/tfc/hl2/future steam supported games) then it'll turn out a hell of a lot cheaper in the long run don't you think... [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

The same thing is going to happen to all clients.
Also like ppl have said if the cafe has an inet connection then they can just do what clients do now, download the full Steam 700 and odd MB install.

As for free mods, why shouldn't the makers get some money for the games if the LAN cafe's are making money off them? If they don't like it that can stick to CS 1.5.
Obviously there are still going to be problems for the cafes without 'net connections but with broadband so ubuiqutous these days those have got to be the minority. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
