Apparently Vivendi Universal is planning to sell most of their gaming sub-divisions such as Sierra to get themselves out of debt. The Adrenaline Vault reported that the three main companies who are reported as being interested in Sierra are Sony, Microsoft and EA Games. Blizzard, another gaming division which looks as though its taking the axe from Vivendi has yet to recieve any offer. Neither Vivendi nor any other companies linked to the speculation have commented. As well as this another couple of things which caught my eye but didn't need their own post are:

Sierra merely published and distributed HL.
Obviously we don't know what the contractual obligations are between Valve and Sierra/Vivendi, but this really shouldn't have a huge impact on Valve.
Besides, this sort of speculation should be taken witha pinch of salt. The games industry is going through a difficult period, where the big fish are getting fatter and the smaller fish are struggling to survive. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

That's going to happen anyway, whoever has the game. Granted it will probably be CS2/CS:CZ when this happens, so bog standard CS will still be free, but everyone had better get their credit cards ready for Steam. Companies won't develop a game for 2 years then give it away for free :)
