HomeLan Chat to Joe Hill

Posted by Blitz at 13:09 20/1/2004.

JCal, over on HomeLan Fed, has made a lengthy news post detailing how HomeLan finally managed to make contact with infamous Cyber X Games president, Joe Hill, albeit via phone. Obviously, Joe was questioned on the absurd events of the Counter-Strike competition, the situation with prizes/refunds, and also what the future holds for the LANs. Unsurprisingly, Joe lays the blame back on Valve's door step:

"First, Hill wasted no time in putting the blame on the failure of the Cyber X Games squarely on Valve Software for technical problems in their popular multiplayer shooter Counter-Strike. Hill said that the problems with running the game affected the entire tournament since organizers, admins and techs needed to concentrate their time on trying to fix the problems they said they encountered trying to run Counter-Strike at the event, specifically with Valve’s Steam content delivery system."

Briefly, he goes on to say that prize money will still be paid, and that refunds will be made to those out of pocket, though he wouldn't give details. Also stated was the fact that CXG LANs will continue, but Counter-strike will not be a part of their future.

Nicely done, keep up the pretence that its Valve's fault and dont listen to the 100's of people that attended and simply say you f***ed up. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Why is everyone so happy that cxg failed? & whats with the whole CPL 1-0 over cxg. Surely you can see that for esports to evolve we need as many big events as possible. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

i love they way Joe Hill tried to make himself look like the innocent party, and blame everything on valve.
If you're running a tournament that large, you need to be prepared for everything, including steam going down and crap like that.
That guy needs to take responsibility for his actions, and stop trying to blame others. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

it was a huge event, he did well to get it all going.

I totally agree with him blaming Valve, from what i've heard, the gamers agreed with him too.

i reckon CPL paid valve not to turn up, but even so, its still valve's fault. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Why the f*** is everyone getting on at him? He clearly stated that Valve were gonna supply him with a LAN-only version of STEAM (ala CPL) and they didnt show up. Sure there were minor problems that were obviously due to organisational errors... but being forced to connect to the net when you thoght you weren't going to have to (ignoring hltv of course) is a pretty big deal! Yeah of course but 1) If I were running an event like that then you've got to have some kind of plan B or at least have the lan version days before the event
2) There seem to have been so many other problems, look at the other games ran, as well as the things like the security
I would loved there to have been another CPL like event, hope that ESWC can prove to be major competition, from what I heard and saw they seemed to have run an almost perfect event last time around. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Conspiracy theory!

Maybe they f***ed up CS deliberatley so that they had an excuse to get rid of CS so they dont have to pay Valve a large sum of money to use steam at the lan thereby reducing costs and giving the finger to Valve to say steam sucks we wont use it and hope others follow! as b0sh says, if he's gonna blame it on valve not showing he has to make them guarantee it in writing and if they haven't got it to him within a few days (as b0sh said) blame valve then, threaten legal action/ cancel tourney/ sue for damages etc.

All sensible business. You dont cry after the event, spit your dummy out. You hold your hands up and say you made a mistake. I've got zero sympathy for this cretin. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
