Half Life Done Quick

Posted by Hotshot at 12:04 28/4/2004.

Many moons ago, when Quake was the sauce of choice for the gaming equivalent of bacon sandwiches, a clever young chap produced Quake Done Quick. This was a video based entirely around the essence of completing the game as quickly as possible. From digging around, the record appears to be 33 minutes, killing all monsters and taking all secrets from every level on Easy skill. Its a quite breathtaking feat.

It's been done in Half-Life now, with the entire game being done in a little over an hour. When I first played Half-Life it took me the best part of 4 and a bit days to complete, with the pitiful Blue-Shift addon taking about an hour and a half. A quick word from the man himself :

Still I did NOT record the run in one part. I actually made 42 small parts. It took me almost two weeks to record it. Some tricks took many many tries to do flawlessly. For example after reaching the alien world "Xen" I do a great jump across the level. Getting this one recorded took me certainly over 100 tries :)

The movie can be had in 3 different flavours:

For more info on the project click here. For any of you wanting to indulge in a bit of nostalgia, information and demos of the Quake Done Quick series can be found here.

mmm, I reckon astrochimp or clx could do it faster. This guy doesn't get any major speed up to speak of.

It's a nice movie, a bit big and I kind of wish he'd done it more like QRDQ because at least that had music and entertaining bits (plus a cool voice over!). Anyway, nice job. Might even get me playing HL single player again to see if I can do some of that stuff any quicker. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Quake Redone Quick was an amalgamation of the best runs from the best players who attempted it. Think it was all on nightmare too. It was something like 9 minutes I think. Awesome stuff.

really awesome considering the game it was done in was quake and not quakeworld (quake has slower movement). [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Are you sure it was Mario 3? Mario 3 was also known as Yoshi's World and was built around 7-8 levels per world and around 6 worlds.
Unless he cheated (EG warping past entire worlds) it would be impossible to complete it in 11 minutes. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

hey greg, if you liked QDQ, you should download "the rabbit run" - its the same thing, but on easy setting. Although theres less monsters, the tricks are a lot better and the whole thing is faster. I think its 2 minutes faster than the nightmare one (QDQ).

yeah i didnt think this hl thing was that great, it showcased how much he plays half life rather than how good his technique is. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

L.F if we had an edit button people would change opinions and stuff and that'd be a bit pointless.

I havent played a game that dragged me in like half life since I first completed it. Amazing game, wouldnt beleive you could complete it that quickly (yeah he did it over 2 weeks, but its still only an hour long and I remember the level Surface Tension lasting longer than that). I guess so dhh, I kind of assumed that if an edit button was added, people would adhere to the accepted "netiquette" of not changing their posts, i.e. having the courage of their convictions and meaning what they typed in the first place.

Perhaps the UKT readership, on balance, might not subscribe to that way of doing things though... [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

On the topic of skill videos, I recommend people go look for Ikaruga vids. That game is so immensely hard, and the guys in the vids take the p***, royally.

Yeah agreed Cy. As sae said too, the Quake engine was harder to bunnyhop in compared to HL (and it is much faster anyway in QDQ than HLDQ). Just shows where the real 'madskillz' lie =D

Would love to see an oldskool Quaker do HL. I bet it would be a LOT faster/more extravagant. In some parts of the HLDQ I was thinking "Why aren't you bunnyhopping? Could have taken off a few seconds there..."

Still a pretty cool movie if a little dull with no music. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
