Half-Life 2 Preload Phase 5

Posted by alpha at 09:35 30/9/2004.

The fifth phase of the Half-Life 2 preload has started. This phase includes all of the CS: Source maps in encrypted form in preparation for CS:S' release next week.

At the same time Valve have updated the CS:S beta, this update fixes and issue with voice comms not working on certain servers. Just restart Steam to get the updates.

Nobody knows yet, Valve haven't released the prices for the Steam packages (which seems a bit stupid), but if you'll be able to pre-order next week then we'll get them in the next few days.

It would make sense for it to be cheaper via. Steam than in the shops, and it would certainly be in Valve's interest to price it that way. The question really is will it be cheaper via. Steam than it would be buying online from a cheap-anyway store like play.com. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Unless you're still on 56k/ISDN, I don't see why people care about having the game on CD/DVD.

When I got my new PC a few months ago, installed Steam, entered my login details and a few hours later all my Valve games were installed. It was great, no need to hunt around looking for CDs or anything, it just installed everything that I asked it to. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Because of bandwidth limits on ISPs these days, and because we don't want to spend 2 hours taking up all the bandwidth if we share the net connection with people who're also trying to use it. Finally, because we want to own it rather than rely on steam to deliver, which they manage infrequently [ Score: 1, informative | Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

What if other companies go the 'steam' way, and you had to download 5 or more games??? [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

i'd rather buy the game myself, that way you've got a cd for when you've formatted so it only takes a few minutes to install, instead of a few hours to download again etc [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Well im buying over Steam, just as i did with CS:CZ i make a back up of my Steam Cache on DVD anyway so i dont have to redownload everything each time.

its gonna cost about $50 for the Gold Edition on Steam which gives you everything, so what if i dont get a box and a CD if i want it that bad ill go nick one from GAME.

My bet's you will be able to Pre-Order HL2 this weekend with it being released come the middle of October and people on STEAM will get it a week or so before.

Only way i wont get it on STEAM if its no cheaper than Play.com cos HL2 will be Ware'z as soon as it released. [ Score: 1, informative | Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
