Half-Life 2 held hostage?

Gamespot has posted an interesting article detailing the ongoing legal battle between Valve and Sierra/Vivendi Universal Games, revealing that Vivendi have the power to delay the game upto a further six months.

What follows is a statement made by VU Games' senior vice president and deputy general counsel Eric Roeder which was entered into the court records:

"Valve has announced that it will deliver a release candidate version of Half-Life 2 (HL2) (a game required under the 2001 SPA) to Sierra/VUG within the next few weeks. If Valve delivers a release candidate version that complies with the contract and is a Final Milestone, then VUG will have six months to release the product under the 2001 SPA. Valve is pressing VUG to release the product early within that six month window, and its representatives have made a number of public statements without our consent or concurrence that the product will be published and released to the general public in September of this year."

	Weebull 18:55 25/9/2004	I can't see Vivendi holding on to the game at all, it will almost certainly make less money the longer its postponed, as Valve will just release it over Steam asap, and people will be forced into getting the online version. I hope it all blows up in Valve's face though. They've been so snide with their "pre-loading" of Steam, which is basically just a ploy to get as many people as possible to go for the download option of HL2, instead of the CD.
