HL2 Benchmarks Revisited

Posted by NoToRiOuS at 19:10 18/11/2004.

After ATI's own HL2 benchmarks earlier in the week, Anandtech have released their own independent results. These benchmarks are comprehensive and even compare the relative gfx cards from ATI against Nvidia (eg the top end XT vs Ultra and Pro vs GT etc).

Its a shame there was no X800 XT PE included however they are some interesting results nonetheless. ATI seems to have the crown in the top end even without the XT PE in the frame. Check out the full article by clicking on this hyperlink.

*Update*

A few more benchmarks carried out by XBit labs, independently this time. What is intriguing is that the X800 PRO keeps up with the 6800 Ultra in 1024 x 768 resolutions (even with eye candy turned on). Check it out here.

think the conclusion really is that HL2 is very CPU dependant.
The 6600 GT is an amazing card though for the price. Available in AGP as well for the 99.9% of people without PCI Xpress slots [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

i doubt its biased

these are the expected benchmark results considering the huge problems valve had with nvidia while making the game [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

For people lookin to get a new card for HL2 etc and don't want to spend 300 quid on a new one.
If you have pci xpress mobo, get 6600 GT and then get another when you need to and SLI Them, option you dont have with ATI.

If you don't have PCI Xpress, get a 6600 GT anyway as its the only mid range card with AGP option. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

noto, your news post is wrong

* 6800 ~ 6800GT results

should read

* 6800 ~ 6600GT results

makes it a bit less impressive that the 6800 is almost keeping up [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

ROFL omg i read ur comment like 10 times and then the post...

going blind.. im too tired from work i tell thee

And yes i am an ATI fan nower days, after Nvidia let downs.. Drivers were their strong point then they take months to make a WHQL (?) verified driver, and the dodgy tweaked drivers that gave (cheated them) higher 3dmark scores. Plus Gainward RMA hell.. will be a long long time before i go back to nvidia, if ever [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

just to put my point accross more.. just looked up the 6600gt 150-175 quid not bad but SLI would mean 300-350?

and they are so proud they have verfying drivers now they even put it in their features list

- GeForce 6800 features at midrange prices!
- Shader Model 3.0
- UltraShadow II
- Consumer Electronics Video
- SLI Multi-GPU Support (PX6600 GT only)
- PCI-E–SIG certified
- Drivers that pass WHQL ***

well done nvidia only took u a few months

ps. i ordered an X800 XT PE for 330 inc vat and 2.50 delivery. not bad ^_^

yeh but if you get a 150 card now, then some new game comes out, its only about a 50-60 quid upgrade (by the time you upgrade) to get 180% extra performance on what you already got [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

ATi going SLI is all well and good, but to say NVIDIA own what was 3DFx they have a considerable technology advantage on said counter-part.

They could of in my mind brought it out much earlier but now with NForce 4 and the arrival of SATA2 etc, its a much more worth while buy.

On a side note the Asus SLI capable NF4 motherboard is just shy of £200.

But saying that my budget is going to get spent on the Asus board, Athlon 64 3500+ and the 6800 GT with water cooling, another GT and ram too follow. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Apparently the nvidia sli driver took 1.5 years to make, so don't expect the ati one anytime soon. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Last time there was SLI it wasn't really that sensible unless you were moneybags, by the time just one Voodoo 2 was getting too slow, it was a better option to buy a new TNT2 Ultra than buy a second Voodoo 2.

Nowadays it may be different with the exorbitant costs of next gen cards, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens again.

As for ATI, I'm still suspicious as I remember what their cards and drivers were like before the Radeon 9x cards came out - shocking. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

these benchmarks are confusing me somewhat... I'm just looking at upgrading and can work out whether the 6800GT PCI Express is anywhere near as good as the X800 XT AGP or whether its the AGP version of the 6800GT they are testing? any clarification would be much appreciated :o) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

its the same, AGP / PCI-Express are same cards with HSI bridge on the AGP to make it work (whatever that is) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

so if i get the one saying PCI-Express it will have the same performance as the AGP version even if i dont put it in the AGP slot? :S [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

the PCI-express versions of the cards are minutely slower than the AGP ones...

this review of the latest cards gets a bit anal about all the technical aspects but seems as fair as any I've found:
