HL2 Not To Be Seen Until 2005?

Posted by NoToRiOuS at 11:10 19/4/2004.

Update: Valve have released the following statemente to squash these rumours:

There have been a lot of rumours and assumptions produced at other sites (or should we say tabloids?) about Half-Life 2 being delayed until 2005. This isn’t the case at all; people are simply getting confused by a hypothetical comment from Gabe Newell.

The comment was a reply to a question about Valve’s reasons for the delay back in September 2003. It’s purely hypothetical and there’s no reason to think Valve will be delaying the game until 2005 or putting $20 million more into it.

The game will be released this year so sit back, relax and keep checking Halflife2.net for real information about Half-Life 2. There isn’t long to wait now.

** /Update **

Apparently during an interview with a gaming magazine, VAVLe's Gabe Newell suggested that there is a chance Half Life 2 may not be released in 2004.

"We've already spent millions into this project, and we're willing to spend as much as we need to make this the best first person experience ever. If that means delaying the game to 2005, we'll do it without any hesitation. If it means sinking another $20 million into the project, we can do it. Rest assured, if we delay the game, it'll be only to blow your socks off even more when it finally releases."

Well after the myriad of delays, this may come as no big surprise but more of a let down.

im sure they could even release it in 2 years and the technology would still be groundbreaking...just a shame as it means other games are having time to catch up [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

cant help but think the novelty might have worn off by the time the game is released.

or even worse for valve, the technology used, and the "revolutionary" engine, may simply be out-of-date by the time they end up releasing it. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

It'll probably do a daikatana. At the time it was being created, it was groundbreaking. By the time it was released it was just average.

Having just played Far Cry recently, i have to say, it wasn't really far off halflife 2's physics. Barrels would be thrown into the air by a grenade, you can shoot stacks of boxes and they fall properly, etc. The enemies aren't too dumb either, if you're seen hiding somewhere, they shoot there, and if you stealth off you can still see em shooting there.

Sorry, but Halflife2 is gonna flop in my opinion. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Half life was a really good game when you got into it Kr1stal, shouldve given it more of a chance maybe.

I think they mightve taken what he said out of context, he was basically trying to say theyd just do what it takes to release a good finished product, whether it took £20million or extending the release date, he didnt say that it would actually be released in 2005.

I really dont see how any game with the words "Valve" and "Half life 2" can flop tbh, no matter how bad it is, not that it will be bad imo anyway. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

The delays begin. HL2 will come out and look dated, and will end up rather average in terms of graphics (just like CS:CZ)

As mentioned already, FarCry. HL2 will need a decent story to save it. Steam wont help it either. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I wouldn't mind if they said 2054. Been waiting for HL2 since the year 2000. Every so often the same old story, been delayed etc. This reason and that reason, not our fault they say.

Why don't they just be honest and say HL2 was under development, ceased development and may resume development some time in the near future.

To buy HL2 you will need Dr Emmett Brown, a Flux capacitor and a Delorian sports car then make it to 88 MPH to collect your copy of HL2.

I'd believe that more than I believe anything they say at this current time. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Maybe it's a strategic move by VALVe. Afterall, currently, how many of you people could play HL2 with a decent fps rate? In a few more months, the GeForce 6800 is going to be around, and i'm sure Radeon have a new offering also.

The average pc, will be capable of running hl2 well, so thats more possible customers to valve. Also, the new wave of pc's isn't far off. Wouldn't it be a good way to get all that money, if HL2 is shipped with these new spec pc's to show off their power?

:) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

The only problem is you can say that until you're blue in the face with PCs constantly moving on in processing and graphical power. Valve have to draw a line somewhere and just release it (if indeed they are waiting for PC specs etc to change, which I don't think they are). [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

They havent said its been delayed and I'd bet you my months wages that Halflife 2 Will not be a flop. Just because of a delay or two... if u remember Halflife was delayed by near enough 2 years and thats still the #1 best selling pc action game. At least VALVe aint like Eidos and spit out their titles with disgusting bugs (im talking about stuff you have to pay for here not f***ing steam) Look at championship manager 4, it got released and a week later u had to patch it... another week or so later you had to patch again. If its already being bundled with the current top notch hardware, its clearly going to be able to run well on one, so by the time the game does release (which may well be 2005) its not going to be all that demanding, especially with all the 64bit technology floating around. Deus Ex 2 has brilliant physics like hl2 and FarCry, decent graphics and excellent story line. If you're like me and you're interested in things such as for example: world conspiracies, aliens, deadly viruses and the illunimati, then this game is for you.

Not as good as the first game mind you, but I recomend you try it. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Marketing strategy. No point in making a game, then the week before its released, start your campaign then. With a big game like HL2 you can do this as it already has so much weight behind it.

Its worked too, the fact is you will all still go out and buy it, its just they will have gained a few more customers since they last 'delayed' it. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
