To Steam or Not to Steam?

Posted by Dev at 13:41 23/1/2003.

Halflife.org have written a spanker of an article about STEAM. The article is very long and detailed but worth the read. Here is a little extract:
It all began in the first month of 2003 when Counter-Strike 1.6 was going to be released to Steam users. Meaning anyone who had a Steam account would automatically receive Counter-Strike 1.6 (along with the new version of TFC) instantly! This was Steam's chance to make it big in the Half-Life community, but soon enough "everything hit the fan". Well it seemed that someone miscalculated the amount of bandwidth the Steam servers would consume and the Steam servers maxed out! On January 16 the Counter-Strike 1.6 and the TFC update was suspended and thousands of Steam users were "outa luck!". Steam certainly made a huge mistake and was obviously not ready for a public release, can you say "Public humiliation"? On top of that Steam users had to download the full version of Counter-Strike (409 MB!!!) in order to get the new 1.6 version; no wonder the Server's maxed out!

Err... no it didn't, it all began when CS 1.4 beta came out.

They are using steam to get you ready for when u have to pay a monthly subscription fee to play like most online games these days. Plus they can sell the games and updates through steam. Its all about the money! [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

hav, checkout the steam forums, they're only going to charge if you buy new games online (through steam), because they know there is no way they'll be able to charge people to play cs. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

miss quoted, i never said in the near future.

I honestly think it will end up subscription one day.

Plus money changes everything so im sure if valve said gooseman here is x% of the profit we are making cs a monthly subscription game hed be like cha ching! :) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Man the sooner CS is made subscription the better. For the last year Counter-Strikes appeal has grown, no disputing that, but the amount of total idiots playing it has also increased x 10.

If it were based upon subscription I'd go back to playing it. As long as they went back to 1.3 :)

The game itself has been battered beyond recognition and spawned a bread of players that are not worth the doggy dirt on my Nike Airs.

Apart from the Pro circuit 90% of CS players are idiots with over inflated opinions of themselves and their skills.

Frankly I'm very happy the latest version of CS has been delayed.

You can bet as soon as it is released all of you will start complaining about some aspect of the latest release. The longer it is withheld the better!

Steam going down can only be considered a good point in my opinion. At least it keeps you lot from complaining for five minutes.

Saying that your complaining about it not being here and when it gets here you will complain about it being here. What a joke the CS community has become. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

i dont agree, alot of people pay around £6 per month to play DAOC , Asherons Call etc..

and cs is a 100 times more popular than these.

you may not pay for it but i gaurantee an awful lot would, world wide. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

It's nice to see people writing about these topical issues but I think this guy is quite a long way off the mark. I think Steam is a pretty good idea from Valve and (although it'll take a few years), eventually I'm pretty sure most computer game sales will be done through a content delivery system like Steam. Same for music and possibly films.

The Steam release was a beta test of the system, there was nothing forcing you to use it. CS 1.6 will be released as a normal downloadable patch at some point anyway. Valve don't need to "remind people who made Half-Life", so implying that they're releasing these things just for that is silly. I'm not quite sure how they expected Steam to cope with tens of thousands of people suddenly trying to download several hundred MB off them, but apart from that I think the only thing they did wrong was not delaying the Steam beta until the release of the proper patch (so a simultaneous release). All this "Valve-hate" is pretty pathetic. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

And CS will never go subscription-based (unless its format is drastically changed). People pay for things like DAOC as they take place in a persistent universe which evoles (and costs money to keep going). Charging monthly fees for games like CS would never work. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

but judging by current standards in this country, cs is going downhill - skill and attitude wise. thats why ive f***ed the b****** off after 2 years .. and now moved onto wc3.

Unfortunately.. wc3 is even worse - attitude wise again .. than cs.

it seems this country has a curse; in which all english gamers must act like f***ing losers ..oh well </rant> [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I didn't actually start downloading from steam till tonight, I tried last night, and that was the first time, tonight its working :)

I personally think its a good idea if they can cope with all the demands of bandwidth...

CS won't be made pay per play, as has been said, DAoC is an evolving game, which is why it is pay per play. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I noticed that my Steam folder is 852.00MB. Surely the CS download wasn't that big? Or does it account for all the different mods? If it does, will that mean uninstalling it effects the whole of Half Life? [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Thats funny because it HAS changed, it was NOT like this in beta 3 and 4. You chould join a wp server and know everyone on it, 80% of whom would be sound. Its changed so much with the growth of the game. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

So sad but true. The UK CS scene is a crying shame. It once used to be something many ol-skool players were proud to be a part of but now it's something most of us are ashamed of. I can't speak for the team behind the original game but I can seek for a great deal of players who played CS while it remained underground and out of reach of the '12 yr old publess f****ts who b***h and moan for the fun of it'.

[/end-mah-rant]

Yeah I'm posting anonymously, reason being I no longer want to be associated with 'CURRENT' UK CS scene. But still my interest is drawn to discussions like this; such is life eh. hehe. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

your missing the point.

right froom the start cs has been plauged by certain elements in the uk, such as cheaters etc. Now obviously there are still some of the oldschool peeps still around - those of which are some of the funniest people you would ever meet, never moan and just get on with the f***ing game. I miss the days were you could just join the ukla server and have a laugh. Now its to look 'pro', own everyone ... and to take the p*** out of the noobs who cant aim. These 'elements' need to f***ing take a look at some of the 'oldskool' people and take a note, cus the amount of bs that comes out of these losers mouths is disgusting. That about rounds of uk cs in general.

the uk cs scene is about as good as craig is beautiful, but u'll never change it back to the way it was in the early betas (like original WP) so u might as well just give up and f*** off or learn to put up with it [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

What shads said. I did not miss the point. I read yours, understood and made my own. It will never be as good as it was back in the early betas (*sniffle*) so just put up with it and get on with it is what we are going to have to do.
