After several rumours last week, Vivendi have finally confirmed with a press release that Half-Life 2 has gone gold. The "planned" retail release date has put at November 16th, one would imagine it will be released via. Steam on the same day:
Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) today announced that Half-Life® 2, the sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed PC titles in gaming history, will ship to retail outlets around the world in November. The Company confirmed that Half-Life 2, developed by Valve Software, has gone gold with a planned retail street date of November 16, 2004.

Warez HL2 will no doubt make it out before the retail release. So VU lose money due to piracy. BUT, Valve have already gotten people to fork over their money for HL2 through Steam, so even though they can't release HL2 through Steam til the 16th either (due to not wanting to get sued), they get to laugh all the way to the bank.
