Rise Of The Female Gamer

Anomoly, over on gotFrag, has posted up an interesting article that focuses on female gamers. He discusses the initial appearance of female gamers/clans in the online communities, before going on to talk about the difficulties of integrating them into the very male-dominated scene:

"Two years ago, leisurely playing online with fellow counter-strike junkies, finding another female gamer was like finding a pink unicorn. However, in recent months the tides have been shifting towards a new trend in the gaming community: the rise of the female gamer. Recent polls by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), have discovered women, over the age of 18, comprise twenty-six percent of the total gaming population. It is also evident that the majority of this group (53%) is not shy about displaying their effort and skill online in games like Counter Strike, Day of Defeat, Call of Duty, Quake, Unreal Tournament and even WarCraft3."
