Games Domain Multiplay Bites The Dust

Posted by Myers at 21:20 21/1/2003.

I found this on ESReality. Games Domain Multiplay, BT's gaming subscription service, will discontinue its services on February 17th. To the CS community, the service was best known for running the Games Domain Online Championships last year.
BT has informed subscribers to its Games Domain branded multiplayer GSP that it intends to discontinue the services on February 17, less than a year and a half after its original launch in November 2001.

The Games Domain Multiplay service was aimed at PC gamers, providing a range of servers and community features for popular online PC games. However, senior staff at the company had warned over six months ago that reluctance among PC gamers to pay for online gaming could result in the death of the service within a matter of months.

Currently there are plenty of other UK GSPs, These include
bygames / thrustworld / wireplay and barrysworld.

Nothing has been said about the GDOC tournament, but it seems unlikely that the event will be run this year. For more info see the article on The Register.

I paid for Barrysworld membership, but I personally thought they were the best GSP at the time, had been around 1 f*** of a long time, and I wanted them to stay around.

Also their membership is only £14 a year, and you get loads - decent webspace, personal forum, and a really fast subscribers only ftp.

Even though I've only played on Barry's gaming servers about 3 times since then, I think I've got my moneys worth, and I know they're not trying to make a buck, just cover costs.

I would never pay more than £20 a year unless I was getting something truly decent/there was no alternative. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Ha, f***in money grabbing BT w**kers have it. BT have done nothing for the UK community but f*** up the non pay per minute 56k and adsl services. I for one hope they learn a lot from this. They constantly drag their feet until Offtel kicks their arse and do nothing but keep the UK behind the rest of Europe in terms of internet access. Heres to hoping that cable owns them in the future... [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Someone seems p***ed off. I know what you mean, all these multi-billion pound companies like Intel/BT think they can throw a competition together, ok GODC was good, but the ratio of prize money for the clans : money made from the company is outrageous.

And yes, BT have done f*** all, their ADSL services are still as bad as they always have been, and we all know how that is ;) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

But hey, i don't complain, only when i need to.

Like i said before, BY, or another top ISP should consider doing a LAN tournament, they always have the marketing capability for it; of course. So why not? [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
