Reddy and praXis have finally finished the FPS guide that was promised to everyone a while back. The guide is pretty detailed (although I havn't actually tried any of the sugesstions yet) and should give you higher FPS when playing CS. Here's a snippet from the guide:
Alot of people over look how smooth cs can play once they see that they have 100 fps in netgraph or cl_showfps 1. Your monitor can only print as many frames as it is allowed to. Physically and virtually the monitor and the graphics card in you agp slot are 2 totally seperate beings. if you play counterstrike with your monitor at 60hz, and your counterstrike is running at 100fps, you will only view 60 fps. if you go into your monitor settings (right click on desktop -> settings -> advanced -> monitor) you will find your refresh rate settings. If your running windows at 60 hz, we have already found something that will make counter-strike (any game) run smoother. Click on the box that says 'hide modes modes that this monitor cannot display' now have a look at the list of refresh rates you can use. An average monitor can do from 60-85 in 1024*768. For the safety of your monitor you will use the maximum permitted in the safe modes. set it to the highest and click apply. Even with this setting done, when you enter into an openGL based enviroment ie. counterstrike/halflife your monitor will automaticly be set to 60hz. dont believe me? go look, simply use the buttons on your monitor when your ingame to see what its running at.
Reddy sent us these wise words to go with this guide:
You do it at your own risk, it's a general performance guide for your machine that should influence fps and make you get more.
So.... happy fiddling and lets hope this guide helps those who's FPS isn't as good as it should be, check out the guide by clicking here.

It doesnt bother me in the slightest that the work that myself and praXis put into that guide is overlooked by the majority of the readers because i stated in the colume that this would be for the lesser skilled users of computers who need some idea of whats needed to get some proper FPS other than a .cfg file in your machine and v-sync off.
Never the less, there are other guides out there - well spotted all you lads that posted that, you get a blue peter badge and a pat on the back for being so sharp.
We took it apon ourselves to make one that would actually be relivant to the average gamer. I was rushed into posting and i was getting pm after pm about when this guide will be posted, and so i didnt get to run a spelling check on it - whoop di doo!
I didnt do it in a HTML file because i prefare flash and its alot less work than poxy html - you all demanded it be done quicker, so that was the best alternative.
So, if you know all the stuff on the guide - well done, dont bother wasting your time and flaming this, coz after all we did it to try help you. Go lick the cats butt or fiddle with yourself over someone else's amazing tweak guide - coz i dont care :D
The only result your gonna get is possibly changing the mind of someone who actually would make use of this and making them turn away from it.
id love to see what fps you all get in 3 smoke grenades - if you beat 128fps mid smoke with a machine of my spec you deserve a pat on the back... but the results speak for themselves. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Bottom line to any flamers, if you really know your stuff about PC's, why do you need a tweak guide? I've been working in IT for 16 years and first tweak guide I've ever used is the one I just wrote. Anyway in that time I've seen far too many self-declared "computer experts" throwing thier s**t around about what they think to really care at this stage. If your a basic to intermediate user who wants to get thier system and games going as fast as they should (and faster) then this guide is for you. The guide will be updated with a lot more tweaks and tips as time becomes available. If you dont need this guide then don't waste your time or anyone elses by complaining about something as trivial as the f**king spelling. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Writing a guide like this is a huge task. How emailing extra material to them rather than flaming.
nicklearse just because you f**ked up your PC during a bios update doesn't mean everybody else will.
In fact, with the amount of people that build their own PC's pinpointing the bios as a potential bottleneck is something a lot of people will overlook and for that the guide will be very useful [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Sam goes with the registry, we are working on a tool that will backup your registry so if something goes wrong, you can put it back to normal and start again.. or leave it
We were looking into some sort of DB work that others could send in information to and we could update the guide with stuff we check over, but that costs money - which we dont have [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Now for some constructive criticism :P
It's not the nicest guide to read, Flash sucks, you should definitly consider Seaweed's offer to do it in HTML! End of the day though, doesn't matter that it's slightly annoying to read because it should work well. Have only read up to the BIOS section so far, and yea, it does sound slightly amateurish as some said, but as reddy's told us it's aimed at users with a basic knowledge, so they should find it easy to understand. :) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

The idea was there and ignore the flames there were a few bits and bobs in there that was good for me and im sure for everyone and considering its free and someone took the time out to bother then fair play to him.
Cant wait for more of the tweaks as im sure there are hundreds more and could you give me a link to those specific detonator drivers you mentioned. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
