ESWC UK Qualifier Venues Announced

Posted by Hotshot at 10:13 19/5/2004.

Following on from our previous post announcing the location of the ESWC UK LAN finals, last night saw the release of the qualifier venues.
The top two teams from each event will qualify for the UK finals to be held at the Magna Centre in Sheffield on the 12th and 13th of June. The venues are as follows:

A few of those venues are unfamiliar to me, being a northern monkey, but there appears to be a decent spread of centres in terms of geography so no team should feel hard done by in attempting to locate a near-ish venue.

To register, use this handy link right here. You must be registered and signed in to the GameFrontier website to process your signup.
For those of you determined to go to the ESWC finals, at the Futuroscope Park just outside Paris, regardless of your teams progress, you might find this link helpful. A useful and relatively cheap way to travel and find accomodation at the event.

**Update**
For those of you already signed up for the LAN extravaganza WGRIII, you will also need to sign up to Gamefrontier link provided above if you wish to participate. For more information check out the Unicon website , which has a full low-down on the amended details for participation.

Pretty bad Myers? They should have held the Bath one at Virtual Realm. At least their PCs are fairly standardised and [removed]

Only shìt thing about VR is that they use Windows 98.

Some of these centres have less than 20 computers, and it is single elimination, thus you could travel, pay £15 and be eliminated after 13 rounds...

There isnt a Wireworld Bath , there is a VR Bath (VGA centre).

All wireworld centres ive been to have been very strict with you touching their PC's , so dont be suprised if you are playing the lan with no console and 5000 50 50 rates.

The organising seems a bit of a shambles, and i can see a max of 2/3 teams turning up to the qualifiers in some of those centres. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

i can see like wireworld centres (4) being attended by s*** clans with rules catering for s*** clans .. each with (2) clans passing through... thats (8) s*** clans getting through to the uk finals. Thats 1/2 the tournament... and on the ecsw website these s*** teams will be rated as some of the best in the uk.

Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't ukt5 the ecsw quals last time myers? did u have no control over this one? cos im sure if u did have u wuda been able to select better centres etc. myers for preshedent.

most if not all of the clans that will get knocked out at unicon and thehub will be better than these wireworld clans. (soz if u intend going wireworld.. but ur a mug!)

I can't really comment on squeex or teamplay cos i havent heard/seen em. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Just if you guys dont know.. WGR III is an ESWC qualifier now. So top two teams from WGR III get free accomadation and entry to the UK ESWC finals ( Sponsored by nVidia ;-0 ). Any teams that have already signed up for WGR III still need to go throught the sign up process on the GameFrontier Webby as mentioned in this article, so ESWC have records of all teams attending. Any other teams wishing to attend WGR-IIIESWC Quals @ UniCon then Sign Up through the GF website and check out #wegotrhythm for all the latest info!! ;-0 [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

UKT3 was the UK qualifier for ESWC last year. I contacted them in January offering to do it this year but Jaffier Mir of GameFrontier is now a senior partner within the ESWC so they will be running the qualifiers for the foreseeable future.

What concerns me most is that they're announcing this 10 days before the qualifiers themselves. People need time to book cheap flights, hotels, travel, get time off work etc.

If I, or anyone dependable, was running this I would have picked UniCon, Hub, CGZ, Harrow and Bifflan. At this late stage it would have been nice to see some online qualifers, like we have for Unreal Tournament.

p.s. The hub would like to let everyone know that the two winning teams from their centre will win £250. The single winner of the Warcraft Competition will receive £50. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Let's hope that they make few mistakes and learn quickly from community feedback if they'll be doing this for the foreseeable future. The ESWC is a fantastic event for spectators outside of it so I GUESS I can forgive them for not having a Cornwall qualifier! Not that I have a team, but still, it's the PRINCIPLE. Well WGRIII is the ESWC qualifier..so you on one hand get to come the We Got Rhythm Lan, the greatest UK Lan Tournament since UKTX (sorry myers ;-0 ), and the top two teams get the places at ESWC.

How i see it... As myers said you could go some centres and play one match and go out, or end up on really p00p00 pcs, with the ESWC pre-quals being at WGR III, you all know the tournament format is good with each team gettin two chances, you know its a g00d centre, and that the tournament will be held in a professional manner. Plus manchester is the most central place for people to come from around the country.

What are you waiting for!! get ya selves signed up!!! ;-0 [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

What does concern me regarding these qualifiers, is that each centre is expected to pay £600 to host a qualifier for them. Those centres with less than 20 computers will only be able to play one game at a time, thus will be limited to 8 teams. 8 teams of 5 players paying £15 = £600... [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

2.01 The tournament consists of Single Elimination

2.02 In a single elimination system, teams are eliminated as soon as they lose one match. The winners advance in the next round of the single elimination up to the final. An extra match is played between the losers of the two semi-finals to decide the 3rd and 4th place.

Are you aware Jonny that by running a qualifier you are meant to adhere to the rules on the ESWC UK site? They state it must be single elimination. Better call them up and ask for an exception. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

What i'm trying to say emfive, is that the centre wont be making any money out of it, especially the smaller ones. All their money will goto ESWC.UK, who aren't really providing anything for them. Centres will therefore have to take the intiative and plunder the event for all the promotion they can get. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Yes and what im trying to say is that your example of them paying for CS and breaking even will still bring money in for WC3 and ps3 therfore making profit. Not much money but more than theyd usually get, hardly anyone plays at the Wireworld Ealing centre, dont know about the others. They will be making a bit of money (maybe less than a day with public) but it will as you say promote the cafes themselves and work out for the best in the long run (although people will probably see how s*** they are and decide not to go again), if anything it improves awareness.
