Microsoft have been added to the already impressive list of sponsors for the upcoming Cyber X Gaming tournament. As well as backing the main competitions, the software giant are putting their XP brand on both the Quake 3 and Counter-Strike female tournaments. This is an important boost for girl gaming, as the female prize purses normally pale in comparison to the male equivalent.
The tournament takes place in Las Vegas, 8th - 11th of January 2004. All the details are on the website, and the press release is mirrored in this column.

Well there aren't really "male" competitions, just mixed and now female. I don't know if there's any physiological reason why females should be worse at gaming than boys, haven't heard of any studies that suggest it's the case. Unless there's some conclusive evidence that one or t'other sex is naturally inclined to be be better at gaming, the whole splitting up of the sexes in gaming looks like pure marketing gimmick.
And if the idea really is to attract more females to gaming with offers of large prizes... shouldn't they be coming to gaming because it's something they enjoy rather than because they see it as an opportunity to play hard go pro? [ Score: 4, informative | Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
