Half-Life Fallout have been informed by Gabe Newell that CS:Source will be available next week for those who pre-order HL2 via. Steam. Here's the quote:
Those who purchase via Steam, will receive the final version of Counter-Strike: Source immediately. Half-Life 2 and other games in the Steam offerings will be made available to purchasers upon their release.
Valve have also revealed the various purchase options for HL2 via. Steam. The basic package includes only HL2 and CS:S, the 'silver' option gives you HL: Source and Valve's Steam back catalogue, and the 'gold' option gives you a strategy guide, some HL2 merchandise and entry into a 'meet Valve' competition. Unfortunately no prices have yet been released.
On a related note, Halflife2.net has a short interview with Chuck Osborn, editor for PC Gamer US who confirms the CS:S is the only multiplayer component that will come with HL2. Reviews of the game are likely to start appearing in the next issue of your favourite newstand gaming mag.

Why have Valve released Steam purchase options but not yet told us how much it'll cost?
Are we sure that HL2.net's interview was with Chuck Osborn and not Meg Ryan? (Based on the length of the answers)
And most importantly: Why are they releasing DoD: Source but not TFC: Source?

And the best bit? If you were to buy the CD version of HL2, Valve would get a small(ish) fraction of the £40 odd quid you pay for it, but you can bet your favourite pet they'll charge close to the same price to get it via Steam, despite the hefty(ish) cost it'll save them to get it to you that way.
Got to love those market economics. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

b) the steam packages offer more than the retail packages.
taking this into account, more people ( i have ) will switch from retail to steam in order to either get the steam packages or so they can play cs:s next week. this will take money away from vivendi as sales through steam go straight to valve. so if vivendi are smart they will get this game on the shelves asap as more and more ppl will switch to steam [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

And for all that i heard about Source its supposed to be w**k.
Im gonna wait for hl2 to get out in shops and i think alots of others will to, problem now its that valve is splitting up the community in majorway and they dont seem to reflect on it only the lawsuit and quickmoney seems to be on their minds. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

What it needs to make people (well, me) interested is a) make the hitboxes and netcode work flawlessly, b) increase the bloody walk speed, and most importantly c) get some map makers who care about competitive CS, understand what makes a good competitive map and couldn't give a crap about eye-candy to create at least half-a-dozen brand new maps specially designed for 5v5, and include them as standard with the game.
That would mean Valve getting a clue though. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I sincerely doubt it will be out in a matter of months however.
Regarding this, I'm just personally really annoyed because I've already pre-ordered the game from elsewhere. 'Course I could cancel that and get it through steam I guess... [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Yes fps's are low, but I think when I started playing cs i was running it on software 3d mode and my machine struggled.
If it becomes the new mainstream standard multiplayer game, manufacturers will make dam sure their equipement will eat if for breakfast... or they won't sell any kit.
I have played it a fair bit and have some major grumbles, but do realise if you want cs to survive then we should embrace it.
Its like building a better a stadium but playing the same game on the pitch!
