The CPL's Communications Director, Tonya Welch, has published the latest in a 5 part series dedicated to the "history of the CPL and its progression over the years". The article, "A New Direction", looks back at the year 2001 and focuses on the highly criticised and often debated transition from Quake to Counter-Strike as the tournament favourite.
"Some within the Quake community would again see possible signs of Quake III being phased out in the acquisition of a primarily Counter-Strike league to represent the CPL at the amateur level. But again, most of those concerns would be dismissed.
Then the hammer fell. On March 14, 2001, less than two weeks after the announcement of the acquisition of CAL, the CPL would upend the professional gaming world with this announcement: “The Cyberathlete Professional League has announced changes to its World Championship Event, to be held December 6-9, 2001. The CPL has named Counter-Strike as the official tournament game for the event.”
Quake III Arena had been dropped."
Hurrah? or not? You decide.
