For several weeks now the powers that be in the cpl.uk circle have been promising major news concerning future CPL events in the United Kingdom. Today Vision (formerly of The Playing Fields) announced it will hold a CPL.UK event in Carlisle on the 16th, 17th and 18th August 2003. Here's the IRC topic:

Everyone's going to moan about venue no matter where it is, as long as it's not completely out the way.

If you hold it in London again everyone'll moan about all tournaments only ever going to London so why does everyone (and those from Scotland) have to get all the way down there?)

The Londoners and Southerners would moan if it was in the north, like Manchester etc (and they will now 'cos it's in Carlisle).

Sensibly Birmingham's the best venue travel-wise, and WCG picking NEC was a very good idea. They must have been logical and realised that it's possibly the easiest place to get to in the UK (trains go directly into the NEC), it's right next to a motorway etc. plus it's in the middle of the country so good for everyone to get to.

The question should not be of venue anyway, all anyone wants is a good network, good clans, good games and no f***-ups. You could hold CPL in a village hall with proper heating etc and it might be nicer than holding it in some giant corporate s***-hole with speakers from stands blasting out j-pop at 130db.

Carlisle, for those who don't know, is oop north. I've circled it on this map for you:

www.nick-cs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/uk.jpg

*Cue moaning about it being up north*

*Cue whoopeees from northerners and Scottish* [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Carlisle has its own airport and accepts commercial aircraft, so not really. And why does it need Europeans to be a better event? Having great players is all well and good but it's nice for the UK to be represented on a world-stage mm?

Or you could fly to Manchester and get a coach to Carlisle.

It's not a village you know... [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Surely it only really makes sense to have country-wide events like this either in London or in the Midlands? That way the average distance people have to travel is going to be less...

No Nick, funnily enough the Midlands is the centre of the country. The South-East has the greatest concentration of people (by quite a long way), so those two areas make the most sense for an event like this.

More people live in London than live in the whole of North West England (where Carlisle is for those that don't know). [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
