BlueYonder Gets 50% Faster

Posted by arsen at 01:09 26/4/2004.

One of the leading UK Broadband providers, BlueYonder, have revealed plans to make some of their services 50% faster. They announced that the upgrades should be complete by the end of next month.

The services which will be effected by this upgrade will be:

The good news about the upgrade is that the cost of each service will not be effected, meaning you will be receiving a quicker connection for the same price!

You can find more info on the changes here on the BY website. Thanks to decrepit for the heads-up.

Terms and conditions

50% speed increase applies to downstream bandwidth speeds only - upstream bandwith speeds will remain at current levels(128k for 512k service, 256k for other services.

We understand that a small group of our 'power-user' customers may benefit from increased upstream speed, and will continue to look for ways in which we can meet this need.

think 512 upload would reduce pings in games by quite a lot. 128 -> 256 makes a big difference [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

im a current 2mb by customer, been a customer for 3 years and never had any real problems, very reliable and fast service. 3mb will be nice but tbh with ya I just want that upload increased :[ .

The reason they wont increase the upload anyhow is because if they increase it they cant fit as many users on the network which means they lose potential customers. This is what ive been told by my local bb techy. Its nice blueyonder are providing the fastest service for broadband in the uk but I still think not enough people know enough about the technology to question why the uploads arent increasing etc [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

At the end of the day, about 90% of the customer base are just home users..people who just download a bit of music, check their mail and browse the web..all download. There isn't much scope for upload really, just between the small minority..which always looses! :'( [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

NTL are currently trialing a service which is a program with a 'turbo' button which means for periods that you need it e.g. downloading patches etc you can increase the speed upto 3mbit etc and then drop back down to 600k/1mbit or whatever, no idea on cost though as its only being trailled atm [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

As far as I know there is no reason for the upload to be any slower than download other than it costing more for the companies in bandwidth costs etc. The idea of ADSL and cable etc was that people would prefer to download than upload, in most cases this is true.

If you are on a 50 : 1 connection on 512 lets say. That means 50 people share that dedicated amount of bandwidth, hence the slow down at peak times. Therefore, for example they could stick 100 people on the 512 upload portion then cap it to 256 upload.

I think on a basic level that is how and why it works. Standing by to be corrected. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
