XCSL on the horizon...

Posted by XCSL|Coz at 03:40 26/7/2005.

Here's some good news for all you clans/players out there who fancy a slight change from the mundane. A new CS league known as the XCSL (Xtreme Counter-Stike league) shall be opening it's doors to the community shortly!

What seperates this league from the others out there is that we'll be using Charges Only (CO) Rules, which have been brought back to give you all fun-filled and exciting matches!

I won't reveal anything more than that for now, but an interview conducted by UKT shall be posted soon, which should answer any remaining questions and queries you have about the league.

In the mean-time, keep your eye on #XCSLeague at Quakenet IRC and the XCSL website at www.XCSLeague.com, which should be going live tonight along with sign-ups.

We are electing to break away from the somewhat traditional rules everybody plays today. Current rules consist of either MR12 or MR15 proceeded by a knife round. CO rules have not been used for 3-4 years now, so many of today’s players have only played MR rules, and will not know what CO rules are.

History: When Counter Strike started to become popular, three distinct rule types evolved: MR rules (Max Rounds), ARC rules (All Rounds Count), & CO rules (Charges Only). The MR format came into being in America where most US clans played using that format in various leagues & ladders, whilst ARC & CO remained played by all European clans.

So, how did we get to the point where everyone now plays MR rules? Well, we have CPL to thank for that. In 1997 the CPL was formed, CPL originally played Quake. As the popularity of the series grew, they included more game types, and hosted a BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) section. This allowed players to play their own games against opponents on games that were not actually in the Official CPL tournaments. It was then that Counter Strike first became a big eSports game. Now the majority of teams attending CPL at this point were American clans, and as such MR were the rule set used, as this was the format the majority of the clans played usually. By 2000, Counter Strike was such a popular game that the CPL included it in their Official Tournament list. As it was an American formed company, they continued with the MR rules format, making one slight change. Instead of the 6v6 previously played, it was decided to change this to 5v5. From then on, MR12 and 5v5 were the official rules used until recently when the rules were revised to MR15.

Over in Europe, everyone was still playing to CO & ARC rules. As CPL expanded and more European teams gained entry into CPL, a lot of leagues/ladders started moving away from the CO & ARC rules, choosing instead to come into line with the CPL. Whilst this undoubtedly was good for some clans, especially the ones that would go on to compete on a world stage, it has not necessarily been a good change for all. For the clans with no such ambitions, it has removed a fun, fast & enjoyable mode of play.

However, we are not hoping to bring back CO rules because they are ‘Old School’, nor are we doing it to re-address a perceived wrong. We are re-introducing them to give clans a chance to play both rule sets. Those that wish to play MR rules still can, those that would like to try CO can too, and clans that wish to play both sets will also have that opportunity. The important thing is, clans now have a choice which they have not had for many a year.

The Xtreme Counter Strike League (XCSL) was founded in April 2005, whilst initially we will be focusing on the Counter Strike community we are hoping to incorporate leagues/ladders for other game types in the future. To start with XCSL will be a UK league, but we hope with time to be able to offer European tournaments as well.

As a new entry to the online gaming scene, we are hoping to work with as many of the other current leagues/ladders as we can, so that clans that wish to participate in more than one tournament can do so without match conflict. As such we are not setting up to rival any other eSports series. We do not aim to be better or more successful than anyone else and the very fact there is both the demand and room for a new league is testament to the good work that others like ClanBase, Enemy Down, CSGN, UKCSL, BYCSL & BWCSL and numerous others have previously done for the Counter Strike community as a whole. Without each and every one of these organisations, the game would not be as hugely popular as it is today.

We hope to create our own unique identity by offering a slightly different experience in online play where we can. As we are CS players ourselves, this is our chance to give something back to the community that we have enjoyed ourselves for numerous years, and hopefully will provide both new & existing gamers an enjoyable experience. Counter Strike has risen to its current heights on the back of a community of gamers, and with this in mind we would like anyone that partakes in our services to remember that. We could not achieve today what we have if it was not for you, the gamers.

Our aim is to try and provide a fun & fair arena for all skill levels to compete in; in as fair an environment as we can manage. We readily accept along the way we will without a doubt make some mistakes, and come across issues we have not thought of, so your patience would be appreciated wherever possible. When we do experience difficulties, please be assured we will do our best to resolve them, and instead of insulting us, or quitting, offer us advice and constructive criticism. This will benefit everyone in the long run.

Thank you for taking the time and expressing the interest to find out more about us, and the Xtreme Counter Strike League.

Thanks, The XCSL Team [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

About time. There are 2 changes that'd need to be coded to make CO stand about above all others.

Firstly, an increased penalty for suicides and TKs, rather than taking money off for a suicide or TK, simply do not allow that person to get any money at the end of the round. In the case of an accidental TK that could be a little harsh, but CO rules was full of teammates "accidentally" killing each other to get the rounds over with faster, or "accidentally" slipping to their death, which if course took the fun away.

Secondly, stopping the game timer when the bomb is down. That leaves CTs with every incentive to defuse and Ts with every incentive to guard the bomb as normal rather than the cat and mouse games that always ensued a bomb plant or a final T left with the bomb.

Good luck with it though, sounds a worthy endeavour [ Score: 2, informative | Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Because most people wouldn't find it in the goodness of their heart to reach out to the community by copying and pasting that amount of crap about the subject matter for no particular reason.

Please don't call me a little twerp; the reason you don't undertake any "community ventures" is because you've run out of people to buy your bulls*** and go along with your hair-brained schemes to Integrate Professional Counter-Strike Business Dynamic Proposals Into A Modern Arena For The Furthering Of A Professional Ethos Within The Highly Lucrative eSports Demographic and other such vacuous waffle [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
