Four-Kings Intel - Show Some Support!

Posted by Myers at 06:25 21/2/2005.

At present Four-Kings Intel are progressing well in the World eSports Games, yet support for the side appears to have been exhausted after years of disappointments, underachievements and constant player changes. Will the success and future of the UK's finest premiere Counter-Strike team capture our interests like it once did?

I have written an article exploring our lack of faith and support for our WEG representatives as they battle their way through to South-East Asian glory.

I alt-tabbed back to IRC, 823 people..bless them, 823 people who, probably like me, had made a considerable caffeine-aided effort to stay awake, stay up and watch the action unfold. A victory over RiotSquad, a thriller against SK.sca and now 8th seed Texas Area Untouchables on Mill. Sure they had been falsely seeded 22nd (despite a top 12 placing at the Winter event) but they knew they were so much better than that. The players began joining their pre-determined teams, 4K Counter-Terrorists, TAU terrorists...live on 3 restarts...restart...restart...restart....

When I think back upon my memories of 4K, all their encounters, all their games, the games I watched sitting behind them at LAN events, the games I watched over HLTV, the games I watched while they were playing on a stage at the World Cyber Games, no game ever matches the intensity, joy, and connection I felt as that TAU encounter. Win or lose, the outcome wouldn't have made a difference, it was a feeling of how much I cared, how much I wanted them to win and how much we all wanted them to win. 800+ people hardly stay awake for the majority of the night to see them lose. It was a buzz, and I haven't felt so connected to the UK CS community since, like supporting a football club, we were a community, with spirit.

noone actually cares anymore because the competition is alot more fierce. Maybe alot of people believe 4K shouldn't be where they are and thus don't feel they should support them?

It's like football fans. Chelsea are 1st and have destroyed everyone, but noone respects them?

Either that or CS is just crap and dead. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

All this talk about "respect" is where alot of the idiocy comes from, people striving to be "respected" amongst a game community is where problems lie.

As rhyzz said, no one really cares anymore, and im sure hes also right about most people dont want to support 4K because they dont like them/ dont think they should be where they are or w/e.

People should just get on with the game and stop worrying about being respected or followed, at the end of the day whether there are 800 arse lickers hanging on to 4K's every word they say or 200 people who will watch it just because they like CS and want to watch a few good teams play is not going to affect 4K's performance.

Its nothing like football, home team having the crowd pump them up to get them going.....

5 people playing a computer game will get fired up by each other, not 800 kids on HLTV going omfg go on 4k you rule my world yada yada.

On a side not 4K are actualy doing well for once, so gl to them [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Rhyzz is right... Chelsea didn't earn the respect they baught it. Imo Aresenal still have the respect despite their current form. Perhaps Southampton also for being so jammy and always JUST avoiding the drop in past seasons.

4kings perhaps need to continue their curent form into the CPL if they are to restore the faith of our nation once more. People have lost interest since 4kings have been the ones who always are out their, wheter they deserve it or not.

This might be different if Ctx, Landed, Lastchance or whoever u fancy as #3 (assuming PCGamer are #2) ever had a shot. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

problem there tho obsidian is 4K would still destroy any one of them teams pretty easily.

theres a big gap between 4K & the rest, bar PCG is they are even bothering.

yes it would be nice to see more UK teams over there, but the reality would probably be that they would go over to USA (or whereever) and get beaten quickly then have to come home.

its actualy a shame that UK CS is still in its infancy, just as 1.6 is about to go out of the window.

There still wont be any "respect" for PC gamers though.

Ask any CS player who they "look up too", and they will say 'No one, why would i look up to somebody'. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

oh and as for chelsea, there is respect due to mourhino, because even though yes he has the backing of a russian gangster with endless pockets, hes also a great manager who has actualy done well with what he has been bestowed.

Claudio ranieri, had the funds, wasnt great as a manager, chelsea still slipped up.

Mourhino in, had the funds, great manager, chelsea are going well.

Bar the battering they took @ newcastle which has left them f***ed for the barca game! [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

im talking about peoples vain need to gain "respect" and how stupid i think it is, thats just my opinion.

and for the record i do watch 4K's games when they are at international tournaments, so its not the fact that i dont 'care' i just fall into the 200 people who watch the game to see 2 good teams play, not to be a 'clinger-on'.

only thing CS has in common with football is that they are both team games :> [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I think a lot of it also may have to do with the fact that we don't really see 4K at any home tournaments, mainly because there aren'y any worth them attending.
When the only time u see 4K play is international tournaments and a half foreign lineup of previous teams you may as well be watching any random foreign team playing because there's no connection just because of a flag.
Nice to see them performing as they know they can for once. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

If your a neutral in any sport from a country you tend to support a team from that country in international competition.
eg. Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool Man U in europe even though half of the teams are international.
Rugby is the same but less so.
I dont see why cs should be different. I'll support 4k or whoever as long as they have that Union Jack before their name. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Oh come on, there is a blatent difference between CS clans and football or rugby teams.

I'll give you a clue. Do CS clans:
a) Have a stadium based in that particular country?
b) Have a training ground and facilities, again based in a particular country?
c) Have a fanbase, mainly from the area surrounding their stadium?
d) Compete in regular national leagues and competitions?
e) Have a name based upon a particular area of the country they are from?

Don't be stupid. Like Sarge said, the only thing comparable between football/rugby and CS is the fact that they are both team games. Nothing bases 4k in the UK apart from the fact that people say so. Oh, and (for now) they have a majority of players from the UK. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I've followed the fortunes of the top UK clans, ever since I really started going beyond the game and getting into the scene itself (2000 onwards). Therefore, 4K/I-eS's results have always been ones to watch out for.

As you said, Myers, a lot of the older gamers now have real-life commitments, etc and this includes me. For example, I'm actually sitting here at work and having a quick browse of a few regular sites before I go home (the only time I really get a chance to catch up on CS/footy news, etc).

I normally enjoy reading about the [top] UK clans' fixtures and results. However, I've also noticed the recent dearth of interest in 4K, etc and it got to me a bit. Therefore, I've tried my best to pop on & post a quick 'nice one lads' note. The same applies for the CB Nations Cup, where Team UK did us so proud.

I think another comment on here also hit the mark - the community, when taken as a whole, seems alot younger than it used to be. Therefore, more people will take an interest in the upcoming clans who tend to feature people in their late teens/early twenties.

Jesus. There are so many angles to this kind of topic, as several of the posts here have shown. I keep asking myself why I still hold an interest in a game (& its community) that I hardly play anymore.

I guess it's partly that old chestnut of aspiration. I was pretty good when I played CS seriously a few years ago, but was realistic enough to accept I was not going to reach the level of Liquid, b0b, KhAoS, TheGenius, Keiju & BL, etc, etc. The same went for my degree subject - I was good, but not good enough to make a comfortable living out if it.

Therefore, I turned to reading about the best players/clans and keeping up with their news from a distance. So, for that, thank you UKT and all the resident monkeys who post (popular or not).
