VALVe Cyber Cafe Program

Posted by Dev at 18:57 5/11/2003.

Some updated information about VALVe's Cyber Cafe Program has been released. Here is the detail:

Valve's cyber café program also protects members against banned or stolen product keys. We understand that it is sometimes difficult to prevent users from misusing your computers or gaining access to the registry and taking the product keys. To help combat this problem, cafés in the program can contact Valve to have their systems "un-banned" and/or to receive a new set of product keys. Old product keys are quickly turned off in order to prevent unauthorized use.

When reviewing the attached agreement you will see the program costs US$10 per month per computer. Remember, this licensing fee entitles you to fully licensed versions of products in the cyber café program and you do not have to purchase the underlying products at retail. With the purchase of one-year licenses café owners will receive a 10% discount lowering the cost per computer to US$108 per year.

So there you have it; $10 a month for each PC that has STEAM installed and the cafe must have at least 10 machines running STEAM.

Igames withdrew all activity with CS, so I'm guessing many cafes will do the same. 1.5 will still run at my local cafe, so I'm guessing if they could do it tournaments could use 1.5? [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I dont think so. It says simply "The cyber cafe program". It doesnt say every new valve game. TBH i think you will have to buy HL2 anyways. But i'll reserve judgement. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I'd think it would include HL2 since the current list of games included is
* Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (available upon release to retail)
* Counter-Strike
* Deathmatch Classic
* Day of Defeat
* Half-Life
* Opposing Force
* Half-Life Deathmatch
* Ricochet
* Team Fortress Classic [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Think of the revenue each internet/gaming cafe PC earns in a month! $10.00 a month is not that much in comparison, especially when it's CS that helps creates a large part of most gaming cafes revenue streams.

Yes it's another cost on the cafe owners head, and will probably be passed down to the end user in the end, so the cafe owner probably won't loose that much as they will make up the loss by charging more to play using their PC's.

Cafe owners have ripped us off for years at least now they have an excuse to do so! [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Not that many cafes run less than 10 comps, but just wondering. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
