ESWC Using Group Stages?

Posted by Protex at 09:44 13/5/2003.

It would appear that the ESWC organisers are going for a European Football approach using an initial group stage instead of the standard double elimination for the Finals in France later this year. The example structure they have released can be seen here.

If this is the case, we could end up seeing one of the favourites get a bad draw and go out early and lesser teams having an easier ride into the play-offs.

A press release from ESWC organisers states that:

"The official competitions will use a tournament structure based on two group stages, followed by single-elimination playoffs. This system has already been successfully adopted by UEFA for its Champions League.

This method represents the best combination of our two main goals: general sporting equity for gamers and e-sport show for spectators. Sporting equity will be all the more assured by 3 steps of selection (first series of group, second series of group and playoffs). Electronic sports show will be enhanced by the high stake of the single-elimination matches played on-stage."

We will have to wait and see how this will affect the tournament as a whole.

There argument on grounds of equity is pointless when France gets 6 qualification spots and better gaming countries such as Sweden only get 3?! [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

it's france's tournament, thus more french teams would be able to attend. It's unlikely that there are that many more countries that could afford to send a team to france. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

the esworldcup is just a name for the tournament, not really reflective of the whole world. However they have to work around what they've got, and some countries can't afford to send a team to paris. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I don't see how that's relevant, as it's being done to reduce the number of games played by each team, not because the current system is flawed. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

was referring to the fact they're using uefa's 'successful system' which is having to be replaced [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

It is the contrary.
well the Champion's League system "help" the big teams imo, in football at least.
You got to be very consistent to go through the 2 poules stages. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Yer, if there are 20 seeds for instance there will be 10 groups with 2 seeds in each. ie Group A : Seed 1 + 20 etc.

Im not sure about the actual system and how easy it will be implement during the competition but lets face it, we need new things to try because anything big, unrelated to CPL (with the exception of UKT lans) are flopping big styleee at the moment with most using the double elim system.
As for the name, ESWC, it really should be changed in my opinion! [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
