iGames UK announce exclusive Nvidia upgrade

Posted by Dev at 12:16 18/4/2003.

Whilst doing a morning browse for news I saw something interesting on the iGamesUK website it seems that the important announcement which was talked about last week on this very website when they changed the company name from 'The VGA' to 'iGamesUK' has today been revealed.

iGames UK have negotiated an investment by NVIDIA to upgrade all iGames UK gaming centres to the latest in technology, the GeForce FX. This investment is for all current iGames centres and any new members joining in the near future.

Dominic Mulroy had this to say:

The dawn of cinematic gaming has arrived with the GeForce FX family of graphics processing units. iGames UK had no doubt that the industry-renowned software compatibility, reliability, and stability that comes hand in hand with NVIDIA will ensure that our 70+ UK member centres will provide their customers the latest cutting edge technology to support their game playing experiene.

The actual card(s) which will be used are the Gainward GeForce FX 5600 ultra and the Gainward GeForce FX 5800 Ultra.

With all this announced as well as the Nvidia gaming centre alliance could we see more games being specifically designed to suit the Nvidia gfx cards?

Depends on what it is, if its the FX5200 or 5600 then its s***, but 5800 and 5800 Ultra would be cool. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

"could we see more games being specifically designed to suit the Nvidia gfx cards?"

No, but you'll see more "f***, ATi have better graphics cards than us, so let's give away as many FXs as possible to make them look great!"

Not that the LAN centres being upgraded is a bad thing, quite the contrary, but the reasons for the deal are hardly Good Samaritan-like. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

lol nick, it's a bit of mutual back scratching, igames get a load of free cards and nvidia get to look like they are supporting the community.

the cards aren't free in all cases. Some centres get them heavily discounted and i mean heavily. So its a good deal for both parties, whatever the reasoning. Especially for the people who use the igamesuk cafe's [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

What about if they are using those cards then? I'm sure people will see significant difference between the mx 440 used now in gaming centres, and the 5800 which will be used ;) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

ah well, at least some people have LAN centers, the nearest one 2 me has 4 PC's and a 56k modem connection, pc's that are from the stone age, ie. one of them is a Pentium 1 233mhz :| and i dont wanna know wot graphics card it has:P [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

The image of the company has no relation to the quality of the card itself, only the quality precieved by the public who choose to judge the quality of a card from the companys image.
I mean a good card can make the company look good, but a good brand image dosen't make the cards performance any better. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

NVidia was unheard of until they produced the GeForce 256 which creamed absolutely everything. From there they went onto the GeForce 2 which was one of, if not the, most popular graphics card of all time. That's how you get a good reputation, by churning out excellent graphics cards. Up until the FX range their image has been spotless... [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

The cards arent free to the lan centres, they're just much cheaper than retail (50% or something). That means they'd still have to invest a good 3 grand+ for a 30 PC centre in which case, 4200's will probably do. Especially when RAM upgrades would be much more benificial for around the same cost (most have 256). [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

hehe. Newer centres get them at a HEAVY discounted price whilst older popular centres get them free with the not so popular centres getting them at like 50% discount is my understanding. overall though you can expect like 80% of the igamesuk centres to have the new FX5xxx series in their machines.
