The Reality of Professional Gaming

Posted by Dev at 13:36 11/12/2002.

Cached has posted up a nice editorial written by CPL President Angel Munoz. The editorial focuses on how professional computer gaming might turn out in the next few years. For once this is a nice article with statistics, facts and figures that back up a nicely put across argument. I suggest you take a read of it... Still not convinced? Well here is a small extract:
In the near future new ideas will be implemented to help advance the sport. For example, we are currently working with a CPL sponsor to establish twenty locations nationwide that will have identical hardware configuration. These locations will hold CPL National Qualifiers that closely approximate the standards of CPL Official Tournaments. The CPL is also developing a partnership with Gamer.tv to broadcast all of the CPL Events on international television. Gamer.tv will be filming at The Winter 2002 Event and Stevie Case (CPL's first pro gamer) has been chosen as one of the reporters for this new show. Additionally, during the 2003 season, the CPL will give away a combined half million dollars in cash prizes at the USA and European Official Tournaments.
If sometimes you look at CS and think 'why do I bother' this may give you a glimmer of hope. Who knows what’s in store...

It's not really a new show, gamer.tv did this in Korea in a way. Stevie Case and gamer.tv followed the progress of the uk and usa team. So interviewing us all loads, ive got the video of the program. Not sure when it's shown on tv. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

The higher prize money gets the better obviously, but I think it would be worth it if they diverted more of the sponsorship money to setting up world wide qualifiers. Surely the tournament would look more attractive to sponsors if 20 of the worlds best teams turned up and not like 5 and a hand full of american teams. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

it's not on-line video, it's a tv program. Members of the uk team were sent the video. The guy talking about 30 minute thing was from ODB productions, not gamer.tv. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
