Fatal1ty Joins CS

Posted by Rob at 14:20 5/6/2002.

Several sites have posted news that top Quake 3 player, fatal1ty, who is a professional gamer, has decided to try his luck with Counter Strike. Evidence of this has been gleamed via the [3D] clan roster. He's joined the top clan [3D] under the name "Wendel" and has being lanning heavily with Ksharp and a few other members over the past few days. He has already participated in a LAN event with the clan and its thought that he will be participating in more in the very near future. Interesting news.

Can't see it agreeing with him, he's got too much skill for cs.

You can learn aim in a few days, but not teamplay. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

rubbish hes smart enough to pick up anything that other cs players can do, and then exceed that. we're talking about a multi time duel champ, which requires considerably more brains than playing cs clan games.. But its hard to see such a competitive person sticking with teammates. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I wouldn't doubt that he will enjoy himself but I think it is obvious he's in this for the money. CPL offering 50k per CS tourney, twice a year, his cut alone will be just under 10k and if he wants to make anything from being a pro gamer he has to play with the trend. Atm CS is that trend, 1 on 1 competitions aren't favourable atm with no decent enough games out. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

TBH he will be a very good player, he's already proven that no matter what game he plays, he can be the best. This time however he's going to another very big game.
He'll become very good, but i dont think he can get to the level required to take on NiP before the CPL worldchampionships.
For 3D having him is good for pr purposes. He's very well known and gets more attention for their team should they need more sponsors. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Yeah, q3 1v1 might be bigger in the US, but still not big enough. CPL is moving away from q3 events to CS and newer games. I think fat is making the right choice.

Yes, you cannot learn teamplay as quickly as aiming, but he can obviously learn game related things much quicker than most people, and he can obviously dedicate himself fully to a game better than most people, therefor I dont think he will have problems catching up with the rest of 3D in all areas. the top prize for winning the Q3 1v1 in the last CPL tournament was 100K? or was that the prize purse? either way, CS was only 50k for the winners, and that has to be shared between 5 of them, So i dont think its for the money. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

TBH i don't think he will be as good at cs as he is at q3 or avp2. I hope so anyway, cos then NiP have a better chance of beating 3D or Europe have a better chance of beating America! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Teamplay isnt something that if you play for ages you develop. You have to be intelligent, which im sure fatality is considering his gaming success. Also, the people he'll be playing around he'll pick it up very quickly. Playing with some of the wolrds best players daily will make him learn very quickly. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

He is probably more intelligent than nearly all fps gamers (whatever game) in the world. On top of that his hand-eye coord is proven, i mean at 14 he could have also been a professional pool player in the usa, this guy is the best at whatever he does !

Just look at the time he took up alien vs predator for ONE cpl tournament (because the 1st prize was worth about 40k dollars), he hadnt played the game for more than a few months, entered the tournament, beat the best avp players in the world at their own game, won the 40 thousand dollar prize, and quit the game ! I understand the final was very intense (3 way) and the score difference was only about 5 in 50, but he beat them. He had practiced in total secret prior to the tournament, and nobody really knew what his tactics were. I understand that his beaten opponents were conceeding that he was not only doing stuff they werent - but doing the stuff they were doing, better. So in other words he rewrote the game script !

But most of all, when the pressure is on, he's been there before. Winning Wimbledon is like climbing a huge psycological wall for non winners, for pete sampras its just another title and a cheque. This guy's got waaaay more competitive experience than ANY cs clan.

But - and this is the real deal - I can't see him sticking with cs to win though, because there isnt enough money (after split 5 ways) and because it appears that he's not the sort of character that relies on other people, especially after surpassing them.

He could improve X3 by influence though...the lengths he goes to to win tournaments (eg rigorous practice + secrecy e.g. prior to the avp tourney he won he practiced alone from a hotel for days, to hide his style - and it took him years to release his q3 config). [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

wendel won just under 200k in the past 2 years, more than his mum and dads salary, so to u's who dont think the games he plays dont have money, where did the 200k come from?, he made it him self?, also hes won a ford sporty car thingy and a moto bike. so playing for 3D for money is like peenuts to him [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Yeah, i knew he played with CK. There was all that controversey last year when a cheat detection caught him, and there was all the stuff about how he shouldnt be allowed to play in any CPL's because he was caught. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Maybe he plays CS coz he enjoys it though? Sure he is also in it for the money, but maybe the little less money is worth it for him, because of the enjoyment he gets from it?
Just a guess though, maybe he completly hates cs.. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
