Evolution of the FPS

Computer and Video Games have uploaded part 3 of their 'Evolution of the FPS' series. Most of you will be shocked to hear that they've interviewed Randy Pitchford in the latest update:
As a developer, which do you think is more important, single-player or multiplayer in first-person shooters? Why?

Pitchford: It really depends on the objective. If your goal is to reach as many players as possible both single- and multiplayer modes are critical. If your objective as a designer is to relate a story, that can be best achieved in a single-player game. If the objective is to simulate conflict, there's nothing like another human at the other end of the wire.

The interview is pretty good and covers a range of topics, from connection type to communities, but focuses mainly on gameplay issues. If you missed them, check out part 1 and part 2 over there.
