DArtagnan Interview
Tell us a little bit about yourself then.
Dartagnan: I'm Greg "DArtagnan" Edwards; I'm 19 and currently a student at Warwick university.
You have a Counter-Strike history which most would envy. What got you into the game and when did you realise you were half decent?
Dartagnan: My 1st on-line game was Jedi Knight, and I made it to rank 1 on cases ladder for sabers no force powers, so I was pretty good at that. Eventually that game died, and I got into Rogue Spear, which has elements similar to CS in a way (it involved more intelligent play than just DM though, which I feel has helped me in CS). Anyway after a while, my old Jedi knight friend the Finnish player DR00ME told me about CS, so I downloaded it and played with him. This was about October 2000. I played for about a month and learnt the basics, and with another friend of mine from real life (Blaze) I started the clan SLDR with Blaze and DR00me soon after. A few months later we were doing quite well (despite half of us probably cheated) but we did make the i7 final vs. 4K. Not long after SLDR died, and me, blaze and sav just jumped across to nocturne, seeing it as playing for fun, but in the end we actually became very good, and beat 4K to win the cpl London qualifiers and we had a period where we were the best in the UK, winning a LAN arena tournament in which 4K competed. However we did shit at cpl London - I think its because I was in Hawaii :D. Sadly towards the end of 2001, we weren't practicing, nemo had left, savace didn't play anymore and we were humiliated in the CPL Dallas qualifier final against 4K. Although it didn't really matter as we had already won the WCG qualifiers and were going to Korea for a week. Despite the tournament being crap it was a good experience. After this Nocturne didn't do much until ps2002, soon after I was recruited into I-es. That period from February to after WCG 2002 was the best time I've had in CS, playing with insanely good team m8's who I had full confidence in, until I guess not playing much at university, I was getting more annoyed when I was playing and got kicked. Then I had a short spell in one, where again my frustration got me removed until where I am in omg! now where I've calmed down :D.
'Probably cheated' – by this are you indicating that maybe a few SLDR players used to cheat online?
Dartagnan: umm...well everyone seemed to accuse us when we played, and in eyes I saw some dodgy stuff. Although none of SLDR was ever caught.
I was at the i7 event and it was a very hyped up final between the unknowns, SLDR and the previous winners 4K. Do you think this event was a pivotal moment in you deciding you wanted to continue and try to be the best?
Dartagnan: Yeah, I mean we weren't expecting to win that, cause we didn't really have our full team (missing the Finnish players) but it was my 1st LAN, and I really enjoyed the competition of it. Especially that game vs. ecsf, it was charges only rules on militia (?!?!) and we were ct 1st and got 0 rounds, and we had to hold on as t, and luckily I won a 1 v 3 and savace won a 1 v 5 to get us to the final. That moment did make me want to attend more LAN events and become the best.
When you and Blaze joined Nocturne you started to pick up momentum and as you said did well at the CPL London qualifiers. Did you at one point believe that it would last and Nocturne would be #1?
Dartagnan: I thought we were, we had a very good team, and had best player in the UK at the time, savace. Sadly the thing that let us down was the inability to practice properly, we were an immature side, and if we'd practiced we could have become a strong force in Europe.
Was it the 'lack of maturity' at that time which caused the downfall of Nocturne after a poor CPL Dallas qualifier? And by poor qualifier I mean the heavy defeat to 4K in the final.
Dartagnan: Well, we hadn't practiced at all before hand, we had a merc because rigs and rock didn't want to come cause we hadn't practiced. Sav hardly played at all, and we just got spanked in the final. After that the team was falling apart with sav and blaze stopping playing properly, and that really weakened the team, I mean we had to recruit Rhyzz ffs.
Saying that though you had already got through the WCG qualifiers and were off to Korea for a week. This was the first time a UK team had been to Korea; unfortunately the main focus at that time was 4K and their trip to Dallas. Was it a good experience?
Dartagnan: Yeah I had a good week seeing a new culture, but we didn't practice, and we did poorly, we still should of gotten through our group, but messed up our chance mainly due to the tournament being ran poorly, but still had a good time.
You say it was a poorly run tournament, was there a clear difference in standards between the 2001 and 2002 cyber games? Both of which you attended.
Dartagnan: Yeah huge difference. They'd made big improvements to make sure this time the CS tournament was run better, and it was. The yellow card thing was a bit gay, we came close to getting disqualified a few times for mouse slamming and shouting naughty words when we died :D. We came 5th, which looks ok, but we know ourselves it was there for us to win and that's why we were all quite annoyed. We could have won Dallas against harder opposition, but when the important game vs. m19 came, we didn't perform and that meant we weren't going to come top 3.
As you said you have spent time in I-eS since as well as ONE and are now in omg!... is 'Greg Edwards' finally settled or can we expect to see him playing for another team sometime soon.
Dartagnan: Well I haven't really been playing at university, I've just got home so going to play quite a lot and try and get back to my old ability, as well as practicing a lot with omg. I like it here, every1's grown up, and it's for fun. I'm not playing for the best team anymore, so I don't feel the pressure to have to be the best now, though I'd still want nothing more than to be the best :D
Do you think omg! can be the best?
Dartagnan: It depends, if we could practice solidly for a few months, and develop teamwork and tactics, on the day we could beat 4K, but I think that's it, we could get the ability to beat them, but don't think we could be better than them. Player for player they're better.
What did you think about being kicked from 4K?
Dartagnan: It came as a complete shock to me really, others told me afterwards there was all this talk about us losing a player, which I'd never heard of. I guess it was due to a combination of the fact that I wasn't playing well cause I was out of practice that got me annoyed, so I whinged too much but I still wish I could have another chance cause they are the best, and I did really enjoy playing with those guys.
You said it was your 'frustration' which got you removed from ONE, do you regret not trying to make a better go of it or was it just not working there for you?
Dartagnan: well, it's cause I hadn't got over being kicked from 4K really. I'd gone from being used to playing for the best to a less experience team, and i got annoyed at silly mistakes too easily. At Intel masters the only thing I wanted was to beat 4K, and when we didn't I was upset and angry. I reckon after that I probably could have played properly for one, cause I calmed down after that. Though it was too late at that stage!
Who are the best players you have played alongside?
Dartagnan: That would have to be Marc Mangiacapra and Stu Harriman. Marc because some of the things he does are insane, he's such a clever player as well as amazing aim. Stu for just insane aim, the amount of times he pulls off insane headshots is quite immense.
Who is the best player you have played against?
Dartagnan: I think the best team I've had to play against was SK in Dallas. A game I felt we should have won, I actually played quite well in that game, but Heaton was amazing. I didn't face him that much cause of positions, but he won SK that game with the 1v1's that he won.
What is the best LAN event you have been to?
Dartagnan: CPL Dallas, the hotel and tournament was fantastic. I had a well good time with the I-eS guys there. We played in the competition till the very last day, gained a word-wide reputation for ourselves, and i met all the words best players.
In the long run which do you think will be more successful CPL or WCG ?
Dartagnan: I'm not really sure, I think WCG would need to move from Korea, but it is more gamer based, cpl tournaments are better, but I think Munoz has more concern for his business than the gamers. WCG is only once a year, which isn't frequent enough to be considered a sport.
Do you see a future for CS in 'pro gaming' and the rise of esports?
Dartagnan: esports could become very big, there's definitely a chance if enough money is put into it. However by that time CS won't be one of those pro games.
If you get picked for team UK will you play?
Dartagnan: Yeah I do actually want to play for the UK team. I played all the games in the UK team that got the furthest when chris0 and Myers were the bosses. I was a little annoyed j0nb0y didn't pick me, but hopefully this time around I will be picked.
Finally predict placements for OMG!, 4K, ONE and lc in this years Clanbase EC and OC
Dartagnan: 4k have a good chance of making the LAN finals and maybe even winning...they did beat mouz. ONE wont get out the group and will be lucky to win some games. For omg! in the OC, I reckon we can go all the way, we can now start practicing properly now I'm back from university and fully active, all our games so far have been just death match games and have gone well. I don't really know anything about lc, can't even name their team, so I don't know how well they'll do.
Thanks Greg, anything else you want to say?
Dartagnan: Shoutout to the Dutch master PB and the racist Russian Alexey!
