Interview with Scud from CS Art

Our resident CS artist St_George hooked up with Scud, the owner of CS Art - cs.net's official art website, to ask him a few questions.

What has been your greatest ever CS-art related achievement?
Scud: Hmm, shit I dunno. I mean I haven't really gotten any sort of award or anything like that. But I think it was an achievement in and of itself to get the site up and running as it's own entity instead of as a little section at cs-nation.
So you don't like csnation much then?
Scud: No I do. I mean that's where I started out pretty much and still post news there every so often, it's just that nowadays there's almost no content in it, whereas a few months ago there was tons. But that's also a little reflection on the community as a whole.
Which part of the community do you enjoy the most - csnation, cs art, the art forums etc.?
Scud: Ha, the forums... those are a joke no matter where you look. For the most part it's a few good people with a lot of idiots.
Out of everyone you have met in the cs world, who has been the most influential, both in the cs art domain, and normal cs?
Scud: Hmm... I dunno. Probably the two who have had the most impact on the art aspect, are stu_pid and foxtrot niner.
Who do you admire the most in the cs community?
Scud: I think foxtrot's are the hardest to do but my alltime favorites are still stu_pid's collection of works.
With ever more 'newbies' getting involved in cs art, what are your views on warez?
Scud: Heh well, sometimes they're good. I mean as my friend's dad, who's a graphic designer said, as a student it's impossible to afford a copy of photoshop, but it's practically NECESSARY to finish any sort of project so in those situations it's necessary to find a juarez version of the prog.
What's the best art package you have ever used?
Scud:Prolly have to be photoshop.
What is the piece of cs art that you are most proud/greatly acclaimed of?
Scud:Ha, I don't think any. Most people forget that I actually made some cs-art oh so long ago.
What piece of advice, if any, would you give to prospective cs da vinci's?
Scud: Don't copy someone be it blatant or copying their style. But DO find someone's style and tweak it and make it your own.
What other art-related interests do you have outside of CS?
Scud: I went to an art college for a year but transferred out of there after finding as much as i like doing art I can't do it 24/7. So now I'm attending a different school as a GFA major [General Fine Arts] with a focus in web media and design, and coming from the art school it's given me a bunch of background to base the stuff I do with the computer on.
How much do you play CS, and are you a clan warrior?
Scud: I haven't played CS lately as much as I've liked to, mainly cause of my involvement with Colin McRae Rally 2, and now school starting up again. And yeah I've been in [~] prophecy for close to 4 months now.
Other than CS and sometimes CMR2, do you play any other mods for half-life, like front-line force?
Scud: I used to play FLF a bunch when it came out, but since then CMR2 came out and so..my HL-mod playing time has been decreased a lot. But i still occasionally play it.
Do you take out your brush and do some art for them?
Scud: Hehe nope, I thought about making some sort of wallpaper for cmr2 but then I realized it'd cut into my skin-making time for cmr2.
Where do you see CS art in a few years time? If CS2 and TFC2 take over, will you move over to them, and be art chief?
Scud: I dunno, hopefully still around. What with goose saying he's gonna do CS2 for the TF2 engine..i'd love it if we were still around and updating in a few years time. Well if CS2 does come out for TF2 I doubt I'm going anywhere as I'll prolly still be hosted at cs.net and i know cliffe will allow me to stay onboard as long as i want to.

Thanks very much for the interview scud, hope you get want you want from your college life, and good luck with future projects!
