Interview With Junks
Ok, first off a bit about yourself.
Junks: I started mapping way back in the doom 2 days and really got a bug for it. Every game I've been into I've got hold of the editor and made maps. I started playing HLDM pretty much as it came out and switched over to TFC then CS around beta2. CS is probably the least amount that I've mapped for a game, as I play it so much. :) In around 4 years I've made about 20 maps, half of which are fun/fy/m00 type maps. I've also played for Snipers Alley for about 4 years.
Who are your favourite mappers and what are your favourite maps?
Junks: n@rby (azzy & inferno) and DaveJ (dust, dust2 & cbble) all the way. They are probably the only 2 official mappers that understand the game as its played by skilled players. Too many mappers spend too much time worrying about the look and feel, and not the gameplay. I've seen some fantastic looking maps that really push this very old game engine too its limits, but they always play poorly.
Which map would you most like to see axed from CS?
Junks: Outdated maps, maps that promote static defenders and little gameplay. Assault & siege are good examples (although siege will never be taken out quite rightly). I think a better way would be for the CS team to release a map pack with 1.6 as a separate download. They could release at least 30-40 quality maps and server admins could decide for themselves what they want and what they dont. There are lots of great maps out there that play very well, but probably dont look as great as say survivor or torn so hence are ignored.
Have you played n@rbys new map, de_airstrip? If so, what do you think of it?
Junks: Yes ive had a look at the betas its pretty good, what you would expect from n@rby. I also like very much what he's done with aztec. Whether it matches up to inferno or aztec remains to be seen, only months of playing matches/pcws/publics on it can tell.
Do you think competition maps such as bwcsl_stone, cpl_fire and clan1_mill are better than the nicer looking maps such as aztec for clan wars?
Junks: I think there is a need for more competition maps yes, as there isnt enough on the 'official' list that are good enough. But no, in answer to your question, I think the official maps that are used for most leagues and tournaments (d2, azzy, inferno, train, nuke, cbble) are better than most custom maps imo, sadly there just aint enough of em.
How long did it take to produce bwcsl_stone?
Junks: About 3 months. The original design and build took around 4 weeks, then play testing, then amending followed by more playtesting for the rest.
Some may have noticed bwcsl_stone is a relatively small map, do you think this is a good thing?
Junks: Yeah, its deliberate. I wanted something different, yet still playable in match (ie 5v5 mr12) conditions. By making it smaller, the options are varied as everything is so much close together.
Do you expect bwcsl_stone to become a permanent fixture in BWCSL season's to come?
Junks: I hope so :) It was trailed in this seasons playoffs and went pretty well. Its being used next season, I suppose if it goes well then yes they'll use it again. Its up to Anders and the BWCSL team.
From the playtests, do you believe Stone is a balanced map, or slightly bias to either team?
Junks: Hmm, It was certainly terrorist biased right up until the last few playtests and amendments. Now I think its pretty even. The CT's really have to sort out their stuff though, its the sort of map that unless the defenders get it right, they get slaughtered.
Do you think stone requires advanced tactics like cpl_fire, or is it more of a 'fraggers' map, like aztec?
Junks: Its a tactical map in some ways, but different to fire. Like I just said, I think the tactics are more important on the CT side and they need to be right. But on the other hand its a small, with lots of teams split attacking various points at once, therefore from a fraggers point of view theres a lot of one-on-one action. So a bit of both :)
What's the general feedback been like for bwcsl_stone?
Junks: Pretty good, although most people are always polite when talking directly to you so its hard to judge. In general people have said its a small, but playable map with lots of options. Quite a number have said that the size almost makes the awp redundant, which is good I think as we have enough awp-dependant maps already.
Do you have any projects planned or in the pipeline?
Junks: Yep. I'm currently working on bwcsl_nepal, my next project for BWCSL. Its a map I made last year for public CS, which originally was to be converted to a match map for the CSVS league. Unfortunately the decline in the leagues popularity made me change my mind and I offered it to Anders. Again its a case of seeing if people like it, if they do then its a possible inclusion. It will probably be my last CS map before the new engine arrives. Like most mappers, I'm almost idling map-wise until HL2 is here, the editor looks simply fantastic.
What's the most rewarding part of being a mapper?
Junks: For me its the building itself. I get lots of satisfaction building a project from scratch and watching it grow into something, especially if its any good. I find mapping very relaxing, I can spend hours doing it and never notice the time passing at all. Making popular maps is a bonus :)
Do you think (like me) that CS 1.6 will be a big pile of fresh, steaming donkey pellets, or are you looking forward to it?
Junks: I think its been delayed way too long and will be an anti-climax. The CS Team don't dare change it too much as the game is very popular as it is, therefore most people will probably think 'is this it?'. I also think HL2 is looming, which will probably see CS slowly fade while the new, updated HL2-engine-CS takes over.
DaveJ or n@rby?
Junks: DaveJ
Kylie or Holly Valance?
Junks: Holly
No way! Kylie has such an excellent rear
Junks: Kylies a moose apart from her arse.
Well, what more do you want in a woman?
Junks: Good point.
Scottish Premier League: Pointless?
Junks: Totally.
What's the best CS community site in the world?
Junks: CSNation! *hides*
We know you meant to say "UKT". Finally, is there anything you'd like to say to round off the interview? The floor is yours.
Junks: Just a big shout to 4K for flying the UK banner, Hi to everyone that knows me, and remember its only a game!
Thanks for your time mate and good luck for the future.
Junks: Thanks bud.
Here is a sneak peak of Junks' latest project, bwcsl_napal:
