UKLA Clan Interview
I'm now joined by [UKLA]Mani, [UKLA]El3h and [UKLA]Shockwave from top UK Counter-Strike clan United Kingdom Liberation Army. They've kindly agreed to answer some questions in regards to the clan, what they're doing now and where they would like to be in the near future.
First off, could all please introduce yourselves, when you started playing CS and when you joined UKLA?
[UKLA]Mani: Ah, well, I started UKLA in December on 1999. So I'm the longest serving member and indeed founder member. I played CS since Beta 3 was a QuakeWorld nut before that.
[UKLA]El3h: I'm El3h, I started playing CS when 1.0 was released, and I've currently been in UKLA for roughly 2-3 weeks.
Most of the UK community has heard of UKLA at one time or another. UKLA first cropped up around the beta stages but disbanded, what led to you wanting to rebuild the clan?
[UKLA]Mani: Our hearts never really left UKLA, we spent a long time building up it's reputation, it was hard to be without when other things didn't quite go how we wanted. It was only logical to come home.
In today's CS, most top clans have reformed their squad down to about 5 or 6 members. What are your views on this approach and how many members do UKLA currently have?
[UKLA]Mani: It's not a bad idea if you can have 5/6 really reliable people. It would never work in UKLA for long; we are mostly old farts with wives, kids and houses. Too many other things that need doing. We have about 8/9 active members right now at different times though. Which is no bad thing, CS is a game after all.
[UKLA]El3h: It's a good idea to have 5/6 reliable & strong players but yet easier said than done to be honest, we currently have bout 8-9 players virtually all members are active.
Can we expect a "rebuild" in the UKLA team in the near future?
[UKLA]Mani: I doubt it, we are trying to put together a LAN team, but we will not be kicking anyone out.
For someone wanting to join UKLA, what are the key aspects you look for in a player?
[UKLA]Mani: Team play, team play, team play. Also, must get along with the lads and behave like an adult.
On the subject of team play, NiP-vesslan- wrote a guide on how to gain maximum effectiveness from your players by pairing them into what he calls "wingmen". Therefore they play off each other. Do UKLA have an approach like this in clan matches or is that releasing too much info? :)
[UKLA]Mani: Not really, we are still trying to rebuild our team play. We like our players to be able to play with everyone else in the clan. I know that's never going to be totally possible, but heh, it's a nice goal.
In one of my recent articles, I discussed the fact that a lot of top UK clans have decided against online competition in favour of practice wars. Recently UKLA have gone inactive in online competitions, why is this? Are you currently playing a lot of pcw's?
[UKLA]Mani: Yes, we try to play at least one PCW a day with clans we like and trust. Online competition is just no fun when you don't trust your opposition. We will most likely re-enter a few competitions when Valve's anti-cheat software is out and running.
With LAN competitions becoming increasingly popular in today’s CS, are UKLA going to increase their efforts so that they can compete in LAN events?
[UKLA]Mani: Definitely, takes times to find members who really want to play LAN events, or convince current members that they do. We couldn't organise a p***-up in a brewery between us, so it may take some time ;-). All true, that's the sad part.
[UKLA]El3h: Heh well I heard Mani and Path are all northern fairies so they all drink shandy so no chance of them getting into pubs.
Not too long ago UKLA entered CPL London, what was your initial thought on how the tournament was run and how does it differ to how the I-series are handled and other UK LAN tournaments?
[UKLA]Mani: Well, I was having a CS break at the time of the last CPL we played in, so I can't say, but the lads that went enjoyed themselves, until they were butchered by NiP anyway ;-). A lot of the guys who have played at the I-series events haven't enjoyed them to be honest.
Will UKLA be attending the Primary Strike LAN tournament hosted by LANArena?
[UKLA]Mani: Most likely yes. Assuming 5 people can find time between their beer drinking an womanising.
[UKLA]El3h: *cough* shandy drinkin.
A lot of clans and players are regarded as script kiddies (no names mentioned). What are your views on The CPL's decision for players to only bring default configs to the tournaments? How does this affect UKLA?
[UKLA]Shockwave: It's a good thing if you ask me.
[UKLA]Mani: Brilliant idea, I wish default configs could be enforced online. We do play with our configs a bit, but not much, most of us are pretty close to default anyway.
Clans such as NiP and X3 are now known to "set the standard" in Counter-Strike competitions because of their awesome team-play and skill. Do you see these clans as inspirations from which you can learn?
[UKLA]Mani: In some ways, it shows what is possible. Now if they drunk 10 pints and still played like that. Then they would be our heroes. But not until ;-)
Also are there any specific players out there whom you as players admire and can learn from? Or do you simply play your own style?
[UKLA]Shockwave: spray and pay - works every time
[UKLA]El3h: Errrm well to be honest, I used to watch a lot of demo's on Elem (former UKLA member) style of awm play, I learnt and adapted his style to my liking.
[UKLA]Mani: Hmm, lots of good players about these days. I don't really admire anyone though. Don't get me wrong, lots of people impress me with their skill and reaction times, but admiration is going a bit far.
Recently BlueYonder released a list of players who had supposedly been caught cheating on their servers. What is your opinion on their decision to do this?
[UKLA]Mani: If they had been 100% sure that all the players on the list were cheats then all well and good, but it turns out that the OGC detection plugin was based on play style and had virtually zero hard evidence involved. Backfired didn't it. It's a good thing this is still treated as a game; otherwise I could see all sorts of libel cases being filed. Just think how you would feel if a GSP published your name as a cheat if you're totally clean. Some of the people on that last have worked hard to have a good reputation and be a good player for years. Now they all have a shadow hanging over their heads, it's very unfair, I assume BY will be more careful in future.
Lastly, is there anything you would like to say to the UK Counter-Strike community and all those UKLA fans out there?
[UKLA]Mani: Fans? Hehe, I don't think we have many. But if we do, why not challenge us with your clan, we'll play anyone.
[UKLA]El3h: Don't drink shandy and play CS or you’ll turn out like UKLA.
I'd like to thank the UKLA members for participating in this interview. Please show your interest by idling in #ukla, posting on their very active forums @ www.ukla.net and getting owned by yours truly on their server, which can be found here - 194.200.85.68:27015.
