j0nb0y Interview

I'm joined by j0nb0y, who was recently announced Team-UK Captain for this years CB Nations Cup.

Can you explain why you decided to rejoin the CS community and take on such a responsibility after you left Infinity-eSports (shortly after the split from 4k)?
j0nb0y: I never really left the CS community, I've been playing in a clan for fun since the day after I left IeS in April. I saw the UK thing was coming up and knew I had the time to do it and thought I could do a pretty good job. You can't really know how much you miss high-level CS until you don't do it any more.
What reasons did you give to the CB Nations Cup Admins as to why you thought you should be Captain?
j0nb0y: I just told him who I was and what I'd done in my CS career. I think the support of IeS helps a great deal but the fact I'd done the job before and been a clan leader for such a lengthy amount of time makes the decision for Clanbase. They don't want any fuss about captaincy decisions in countries and went with the safe choice I think.
Since being named Captain of the team, what preparations have you been doing to ensure the success of the team?
j0nb0y: Well first thing first, the selection of the team itself. I am determined to make a more open-minded squad selection this season, whether it contains the same names or not I want to be sure they are the guys that deserve the chance to play in the team. I've also knocked up a website at http://www.teamuk-cs.co.uk (cheers for the URL Chris) which will let people know what the team is all about and hopefully answer any questions. I guess we will actually start playing near the end of next week.
For those of you that don't know, the team is due to be announced on Saturday 2nd November 2002. There are a lot of player to choose from out of top clans such as ONE, erm.cs, OMG! and of course I-eS. Have you decided on the team yet?
j0nb0y: I've decided on seven of the eight players, most of those have already been notified but have told to keep quiet until Saturday.
You probably know this is coming but do you think you could give us a hint (or just outright tell us if you want to) as to who is in the team?
j0nb0y: I won't tell anything until Saturday I'm afraid, it's not fair to those people whom I'm still considering. At least half the team should be guessed by anyone who knows anything about UK CS though.
Are you going to be doing the tactics? Or a certain person who's blatantly going to be on team ;)
j0nb0y: I think that'll be something which will be decided once we get going, I've no doubt that certain person will be calling the shots in-game. I'm not sure my tactical knowledge is what it used to be, something I've probably lost since leaving I-eS.
Who do you think will be the biggest threat this year? Obviously Sweden will be a tough opposition.
j0nb0y: I wouldn't discount Norway this season, France also seem a lot tougher than in previous seasons. Sweden are still the favourites and probably will be for a while but they are certainly beatable, as is everyone else in the competition. The UK has no superiors in terms of players individual skill sets, however it's our lack of long-standing, committed clans that lets our nation down generally. With the recent burst of clans hopefully things are taking a change for the better.
What do you think about the Selection Policy? The "2 Players per Clan" Rule seems a bit unfair on some countries with only a few really decent teams.
j0nb0y: I think it' a good idea as it gives players who haven't had the chance to play for the SK's of the world a shot at playing with a team of real calibre. An opportunity like the national team will shoot a good players reputation through the roof if he puts a good performance in. This will encourage more clans to start up, with the knowledge that there are players out there who can win games and are not already playing 'pro'. The common myth which stagnates CS communities like the UK's is that the IeS (or equivalent) players are the only top-calibre players around and any other clans are going to have to settle for second-rate players and will always struggle. This puts people off working hard to build teams. The IeS (or equivalent) players are the best BECAUSE they are in IeS, not the other way round.
Which foreign player (if any) do you wish was from the UK so they could play for Team-UK?
j0nb0y: HeatoN is a superb talent, which everyone knows, but as to a few less hyped people it would be nice to have a couple really top snipers. AWPing is something the UK has been behind on too and a few more 24/7 users of the weapon wouldn't go amiss.

E.g. vesslan, xeqtr. cracken from mTw is someone I've always admired too.

After the Cup has finished do you think you will take on any other major responsibilities, and become more involved in Pro-gaming?
j0nb0y: Probably not immediately, however I do have more time now than I did earlier in the year and am considering playing a game seriously again. I'm not really interested in coming back to do anything which doesn't involve playing though, so we shall see.
Going a bit off-topic from Team-UK now, have you been pleased with I-eS' progress since you left? Are there any other major decisions you would have done differently?
j0nb0y: I was really pleased with their performance soon after I left (i.e. CPL Summer) however I think they've been slipping off the rails a bit recently especially with the very very close recent games vs. Clan ONE. I think they've done brilliantly sponsorship-wise and will pull through whatever slump they are in at the moment, just a lack of practice.

Altogether I'm proud of them and I think Doug is wicked and a far better runner of the clan than I ever was. I try and keep abreast of everything in the priv channel and with the occasional mercing for them and it's great to see everything they are doing from outside, a class bunch!

What are your views on the Hungary situation? Evidently they were left out of the cup because they were too small and not very skilled. However, the Cup Admin said it was because they didn't show enough interest.
j0nb0y:They probably are too small and not skilled enough.
What are your thoughts on the no ISDN rule?
j0nb0y: It's my rule so I think it owns. Seriously though, the Nations Cup is an Internet-only competition and we need all the advantages we can get, especially considering the below-par telecomms we have in this country.
Well I think we come to the end of the interview, any exclusives or anything you would like to say to the CS community?
j0nb0y: No just cheers to everyone for supporting my getting the position, I know I'll do a good job. Special thanks to DK who is a really nice bloke and has been once of the voice backing some of my controversial policies (e.g. no ISDN) which is very cool.
Thanks for your time.
j0nb0y: Cheers.

Update

Do you think you could tell us the key factors that made you choose each player?
j0nb0y: I've tried to make a point of selecting players who have given their clans good service over time, whilst being able to play at a good standard on LAN and the Internet. I'm not going to go through each player one by one, however each one conforms to all the criteria needed to be considered for selection. I did not consider clanless players.
If you were allowed 9 players which extra player would you have chosen?
j0nb0y: Not really fair to answer that.
Quite a bit of controversy about some of your decisions. What do you have to say to those people who think you made wrong choices?
j0nb0y: I believe there only seems to be one controversial decision (as far as I know). All I can say is wait and see how he does in the competition, a year ago people like Harriman or m0rph would have had the same reaction (maybe worse) and now look at them. If he performs poorly, then I'm more than happy to accept the consequences of my decision, however if he performs
well, which I'm sure he will, I think we will see some people eating their
words.

I've also chased up a few of the players from Team-UK and asked them a few questions.

Demo

Did you expect to be chosen for Team UK?
tR`Demo: I did not expect that I would get chosen mainly because I am a pretty much unknown player.
What qualities do you think you will bring to Team UK?
tR`Demo: Well being the most inexperienced player in the team I don’t think I will bring anything that the other players don't already have. What I feel is that by being in the team it gives me a chance to excel in my skills. I will be willing to do whatever the team ask me to do and will putting in the commitment that is needed to help.
Who are you looking forward to playing against most?
tR`Demo: Team Sweden as it would be a great experience player with top players like HeaTon and Pott1, but I don't think I deserve that honour yet :]

Keiju

Did you expect to be chosen for Team UK?
ONE|Keiju: hmm, people would sometimes say keiju for team-uk! jokingly but, no I didn’t really expect to be picked :o
What qualities do you think you will bring to Team UK?
ONE|Keiju: Well, I can shoot ok and like to think have good game-sense ;x, I would also like to contribute tactically as I sometimes do with my clan.
Who are you looking forward to playing with most?
ONE|Keiju: Would have to say Sweden for definite =], to own Heaton and potti :P, but I’m also looking forward to playing Germany and Norway

m0rph

Did you expect to be chosen for Team UK?
m0rph: I was hoping that i might have a chance. But I thought that maybe I hadn’t done enough and in the knowledge that omg! had players on broadband like vip, sarge and landshark I really didn’t know :/ also the fact that players like annum and co were getting back into the fold I thought I wouldn’t make it in
What qualities do you think you will bring to Team UK?
m0rph: I hope to help bring the cbnations cup :> I don’t know how much of an active role I will get in the team, but if I get a chance to prove myself in the first team I hope to bring in the things I've learned from playing with some great players like pathfinder in UKLA and my current squad omg! I hope to bring some frags too :>
Who are you looking forward to playing against most?

m0rph: Probably Sweden. I've always wanted to see what it would be like playing against virtually the best team in the world. No disrespect to Germany, France and Norway of course who will be amongst the favourites to take the gold, but it would be really cool to try my hand vs. potti, heaton and co

Bom

Did you expect to be chosen for Team UK?
erm^Bom: I knew I was in the running. I didn’t expect to be picked but I was hoping too as its a great head sweller :)
What qualities do you think you will bring to Team UK?
erm^Bom: Well hopefully i will play well shooting wise in game, im probably a bit temperamental, sometimes i can be very good others none existent. Mainly im dependable to back up & not leave my post.
Who are you looking forward to playing against most?
erm^Bom: im not looking forward to playing against any1 in particular, im just looking forward to playing with the other UK team members.

Khaos

Did you expect to be chosen for Team UK?
ONE|KhAoS: no, I heard Jon had informed 7 of the 8 players, automatically assumed that because I wasn't told I wasn't in
What qualities do you think you will bring to Team UK?
ONE|KhAoS: well experience of playing in NC3 last year. The game against Sweden went like a dream and we were unlucky to lose it. Also I noticed that the team doesn't really include any snipers, as I tend to use AWP a lot now a days so maybe I could take on that role in the team
Who are you looking forward to playing against most?
ONE|KhAoS: Sweden the rematch! but I think Norway will be a good one, as I think they can win it this year

Why did you write this

I've tried to make a point of selecting players who have given their clans good service over time, whilst being able to play at a good standard on LAN and the Internet.

So what good does having a good standard on LAN provide when you say and I quote

Seriously though, the Nations Cup is an Internet-only competition and we need all the advantages we can get

Bit of a contradiction there isn't it? Not flaming or nothing, just seemed a dumb viewpoint to take. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
