Interview with Schröet Kommando

I recently met up with bds, HeatoN, Potti and Xenon who, of course, are some of the top players from SK.sca.

You are all already very famous within the community, so do you think you could tell us about yourselves before you started playing Counter-Strike?
SK|Xenon: I used to play a lot of tennis golf and I used to Ski. I started playing computer games online with Quake1 and then eventually swapped over to Quake3. I'm relatively new to CS when you look at the other people in the team.

SK|bds: I used to do a lot of sports before I got into gaming. When I quit school and started to work I didn't have enough time to continue with it. But I felt that I lacked the competition. A few friends at work used to play Half-Life a lot and I tried it out and really liked it. Was nice to be able to play vs. each other and gain skill and just get better all the time. A few months later I found Counter-Strike, which was even more fun at that time, and here I am now, not playing any games except Phantasy Star.

SK|HeatoN: I was also an sport geek before Counter-Strike, playing hockey 24 / 7 until I injured myself, then I started to play Counter-Strike and got stuck with it, and that's what I've been doing since then.

SK|Potti: I use to work out a lot and the gym I use to go to are closed Sundays, so I went to a place for teenagers. I knew a guy that was working there and he was sitting in his office playing Half-Life dm, I thought it looked really cool, I had never played a computer game before, but a lot of Playstation :). So I thought it was really cool, and when I found out it was on internet I got hooked on it, started playing a lot and then I found CS after a week or so...

Which lifestyle do you prefer?
SK|Potti: Well for me CS is a kind of sport, I just don't move my body as much as in a "real" sport, CS fits me more because you can play whenever you want.

SK|HeatoN: Well, sports = more healthy, but Counter-Strike = more fun, meet more people, and get to travel around the world, so I would say Counter-Strike.

SK|bds: Being among the best in the world in CS definitely beats being average in other sports. But they both have their ups and downs.

SK|Xenon: Yes, being the best is definitely worth giving up the other lifestyle for. Tennis was not fun anymore after I stopped winning local tournaments. :)

When do you think you will retire from playing Counter-Strike/Gaming professionally?
SK|Potti:When I don't have the same passion for it.

SK|Xenon: When there is more $ in another game or when there is just too much to do in real life.

SK|bds:When it's not fun anymore.

SK|HeatoN: The day I don't think it's fun anymore.

Does that mean you have a long CS career in front of you then?
SK|bds: Of course!

SK|Potti: You bet!

SK|HeatoN: Yes of course.

Do any of you have a girlfriend? What do they think about your gaming? If not, what do your close friends think about it?
SK|Xenon: Yes. I told her I play a bit and have been in magazines and on TV but it's not something we usually discuss when we meet. She rides horses and competes in tournaments; I play games and compete in tournaments, end of story.

SK|Potti: Nope, well all my friends think it's really cool that I make money off something like that and I get to travel a lot.

SK|HeatoN: Nope. All of my close friends think it’s really cool and are happy for me.

SK|bds: Yeah, Lotta and she thinks it's quite cool since it's getting this big (with media, prize money, etc). Most friends thinks its cool, reading about it in the newspapers.

If your friends and family had a different attitude towards it, and you had to choose between them and Counter-Strike... Which do you think you would choose?
SK|Potti: I don't think I’ll ever have to make that choice, people should respect whatever hobby you have if they are real friends/girlfriend.

SK|Xenon: If I had to make that choice then they are not real friends. (Unless of course I was playing 24/7 and never did anything else, but then I would hope they could slap some sense into me).

SK|bds: If my girlfriend would diss me because of Counter-Strike, she is not worth having. You need to respect each other and what you like to do. No matter if it’s Counter-Strike, playing bingo or something else.

SK|HeatoN: If your friends let you choose between them and a hobby, then they're not real friends.

So, what is an average day like in the life of a top CS player?
SK|Potti: Hmm, like every other person with a job, I’ll hang out some with my friends, go to the gym (just started again), watch a movie and of course play CS.

SK|Xenon: Train for a few weeks before tournaments. That’s about it for me.

SK|bds: Like the average life with a little bit of Counter-Strike on top…. And a little more chicks.

SK|HeatoN: Get up: Breakfast JOLT COLA, play 4 hours, lunch JOLT COLA, play 8 hours, Dinner JOLT COLA, play 8 hours, sleep.

Busy. So do you find girls are attracted to a 'top fragger'?
SK|Potti: Of course.

SK|Xenon: As much as they are attracted to professional chess players.

SK|bds: Everyone wants a hero :).

SK|HeatoN: Of course!

Heh, well enough of your lives, let's talk about SK now. With the CPL P4 Summer Championships fading into the past, what event(s) are you going to focus on now?
SK|bds: CPL Oslo, CPL Paris, CPL Dallas.

SK|HeatoN: CPL Oslo is the next event for us so that’s what we are focusing on now, we just started to practice again after a couple of weeks break from counter-strike.

Obviously you will be aiming for a #1 position at all 3 of those; do you think you can achieve that?
SK|Potti: Depends on the motivation in the team, if that fails everything fails in my opinion, but I hope we’ll do our best.

SK|Xenon: If we train enough we can.

SK|HeatoN: Yes of course we will aim for the no.1 position, and I really think we can achieve that.

SK|bds: As long as we don’t underestimate I really think we have a big chance. But you never know in tournaments, everything can happen.

What do you think about the amount of roster changing that the American clans such as 3D did after their abysmal performance at The CPL P4 Summer Championships?
SK|Xenon: Don’t think it will make a difference. They lost 2 really good players and gained 2 really good ones.

SK|Potti: Dunno, time will tell...

SK|bds: Will continue to happen until the players, the teams and the organisations turn professional enough.

So you think some clans which say they are Pro-CS clans, are just amateurs?
SK|bds: Definitely, No one is 100% pro.
Which clans in your opinions are closest to turning 100% pro then?
SK|Xenon: I don't think any are even close. It's much easier going pro as an individual player than as a team.

SK|bds: The ones with real sponsorship and not just investments, with a serious organisation using a company, with players that go under contracts. And with no "managers" and "sponsors"... It’s too much talk nowadays.

SK|HeatoN: Yeah I agree with bds on that one.

You actually mentioned something I was thinking about earlier bds, about contracts. Until there is some sort of stability in clans then I don't think professionalism is going to happen. However contracts that tied a player to a clan for a certain amount of time (such as Football teams) could really mean sponsors could have confidence in clans.
SK|bds: That’s exactly what we need.

SK|Xenon: It would definitely be a step in the right direction. One, which SK has recently taken.

Heaton, when you were interviewed by Myers (in your NIP days), you mentioned that you would be able to live off pro-gaming completely before the summer... Well now it's Summer, can you? Has your move to SK affected your income at all?
SK|HeatoN:As always people talk too much s**t, and says they have fixed stuff, that you soon can live on it, that all trips are covered for the next year, then it turns out they have fixed nothing, in this case our manager (read g3x)
So do you think you any of you will be able to live off gaming soon?
SK|bds: I definitely think so.

SK|Xenon: I used to live on it for about 2 years from 99-01. I reckon you can only do it atm as an individual player and not as a team. Perhaps in a few years....

SK|HeatoN: I really don’t know, athletes in some minor sports make lots of money, on a sport that’s a lot smaller then Counter-Strike, so it all just have to become a little more professional.

SK|Potti: At the moment I'm actually living from prize money but in order to live on it you have to almost win every tournament since currently there aren’t any sponsors that pay salary… It all has to be more professional for the sponsors so they can open their pockets more. :)

SK|Xenon: Except Intel of course, which pays every one of us a small amount of pocket money every month for playing.

Ok, so how did you share the money from the latest CPL? And what did you spend it on?
SK|bds: We are 6 people, plus that our sponsors get a share. I will spend it in re-decorating my apartment I guess.

SK|Potti: We haven’t got it yet but we’ll split it on 6 persons and SK gets a cut.

Why haven't you got it yet?
SK|Potti: It takes about 60 days for the CPL to pay the cheques I think.
What type of thoughts are going through your head when you play in a tough match, such as the last CPL final against GOL?
SK|Xenon: The toughest game in my eyes was vs. Infinity-eSports and TSO, we were down by a lot of rounds versus both and needed to win the last 12 in order to take the game, which we managed to do. Against GoL we had 2 chances, so we slipped a bit and weren’t very concentrated in the first game so we got owned. We did better in the 2nd half.

SK|HeatoN: We played really bad in the first half, thought we already had won, and GoL played really impressive, but in the other game with started to focus a little bit and it went much better.

SK|Potti: You have a million thoughts in your head, can’t be described really, a thing that you have to experience yourself. But the closer the game is, the more fun it is to win it.

So what did you think of Infinity-eSports? A lot of people said they were surprised by their performance.
SK|bds: They played really really good, both individually and teamplay-wise, and they are all great people.

SK|Potti: They owned, I think they will get better and better.

SK|Xenon: Good solid team and nice guys. But they are thieves.... They stole my joystick that I won in the raffle... :( B**TARDS!

SK|HeatoN: They improved a lot since last CPL Dallas, really good team now, and nice guys.

Have you had a chance to play any other UK teams?
SK|Potti: Nope since we are such a new team
Xenon, I heard you are moving to London, how is that going to affect you being in SK?
SK|Xenon: It’s not, I’ll have more time for gaming than I did when I worked here, and more money to live on thanks to the government. :)
Do you think you will get involved with the UK CS scene while you're here?
SK|Xenon: Negative. The sad part is that I will probably ping better with Blueyonder or Nildram from the UK than our Norwegian guys ping from Norway. :)
What sort of line up can we expect to see at CPL Oslo and other events? Same as the last CPL or are you getting any players?
SK|bds: I hope it will be the same line-up as in CPL Summer. But it all depends on motivation and what everyone is willing to do. It takes a lot of time to be on top. And we want to have a team where everyone wants to actually spend their time in becoming/being the best.

SK|Potti: Dunno, depends on the motivation in all the players, it's like any other sport , you cant just skip the practices and think you will play the matches.

SK|HeatoN: Yeah, the ones who play a lot, well, will play in the events.

SK|Xenon: Most likely the same one plus another player.

Any idea who that will be?
SK|Xenon: Most likely niree.
Also, I'm not sure if you heard but there was an online auction a while back, where the highest bidder would have CS lessons from a top American CS player. What are your thoughts on that?
SK|bds: It’s a step in the right direction for sure. Every other sport has it. So why not gaming?

SK|Xenon: It works in Korea so it might work in the rest of the world in the future.

SK|Potti: Dunno, the morals have to change a bit first I think, right now many people are jealous and stuff like that when you get successful, and they talk shit about things like that.

What are SK's targets for the next 3 years? Overall and not just in regard to tournaments/leagues.
SK|bds: Take gaming to another level professionally.

SK|Xenon: It would be cool to go full-time but that’s not really something we can choose to do at the moment as its up to the sponsors and the media. I guess we will be happy if we can make a substantial amount of money while doing this part time.

SK|Potti: Hmm I want to go more "pro" of course, dunno really, 3 years is along time, hard to say.

And finally do you think you can give UKTerrorist a nice big exclusive?
SK|bds: Gaming salary is nice...

SK|Potti: hmm I like kebab.

SK|HeatoN: Ok I got one, That Potti’s actually even better then Scream at puting out COBROR…..KUUUUUUUNGS KOBRAN!

Well, thank you for your time. Good luck to SK in the future.

hahahaha the joystick is mineeeeeeee.

The story behind it is this : They were doing the raffle and i was with the SK guys, xenon told me to hold his tickets cause he had to off somewhere. When he came back i had arms full of goodies. We gave out the usless s*** like Alien vs predator 2 hat to fatality (him being the avp2 champion) and some1 else took the games, leaving me and xenon to argue over this joystick.

We said we'd try and sell it and split the money. Our flight left before he woke up, and i got away with it :D [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I don't know for sure, but I suspect it's unedited. If you've ever seen CPL interview footage, Xenon especially speaks very good english with very little accent.

I joke with my European friends about their having better grammar than me -- here in the USA, at least, people tend to ignore their english lessons and learn to communicate from their families and each other.

In Europe, they learn and use correct grammar in school, thus you end up with the funny result of Swedes speaking better english. :)

It's amusing, really, in a sad way. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
