Fusion Interview

Fusion are a rising clan amongst the UK clan ranks, and today Antmoo's found some time to sit down with a few of their members for an interview. Earlier this month, in this press release sent to UKT, they revealed that they've split into two divisions, fusion.uk and fusion.eu.

I'm joined here by four members of a top UK clan: Fusion. First off would you mind telling me about yourselves and your CS history?

[DoZ]: I'm DoZ...I started in 7.0... but didn't play much till 1.0. Had a poor machine and net connection, was only on 33.6k up till 1.3, so I was kinda limited in what I could do.

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: erm, k, I started in woah, beta 6, never actually like it until I knackered my knee and spent 4 weeks stuck in front of the computer unable to walk, I got bored of UT so I started playing and it developed from there!

Fu|SpLeEn: well im SpLeEn, a 21 year old german student who started playing cs online with beta 3.1 and being in one clan for ages (dktoxic). We never played really serious… last year we tried to but real life forced most of the team to quit. Now all the active players are a part of fusion.eu.

Some people might think you are not a good enough clan to be interviewed. I know I saw a reply to your news post on UKT about the two divisions forming saying, "I don't think Fusion are big enough to have new about them". What do you say to this?

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but some people think we are. Why not let people have news...

[DoZ]: I just don't pay attention to 'em ;-) People who mind don't matter, people who matter don't mind!

Fu|SpLeEn: do I actually care what the others say?

You recently got up to 4th in CB, before quitting to re-join with the two divisions. Do you think you'll be able to steal the top spot off Uninspired? Who else do you think is a threat?

[DoZ]: It's only an online competition. There's so many variables in online CS, so much that can go wrong that wouldn't at LAN. I don't really see us focusing with any real intent on cb. It's just there to arrange semi-formal games

Fu|Keefe: We comfortably beat sC who are 4^th though.

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: We can hope so, but you never know, lots of clans see CB as second rate league due to the structure, we're just mainly using it for days when we don’t have matches in other leagues. Other clans will obviously be showing more commitment to it, so they will deserve the higher ranking.

Fu|SpLeEn: I see the developments in .uk team and I would say they're going to be easily back where we were before the re-join. But as DoZ already mentioned; LANs show the real w1nn4rs. And if we have a look at the international cs scene, we will face the reality that UK is ways behind Germany and the northern countries.

Fu|Keefe: Ui, LCA, SoE and F2B are the strong ones

Fu|SpLeEn: hmmm dunno… think SiN are quiet well.

How often do you play these teams in friendlies and/or league/tourney matches?

[DoZ]: We're working our way up against the level of opposition we are playing. We have friendlies most days, except Friday / Saturday.

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: we played Situation Critical last night and also Tribal…We don’t usually play on Saturdays, but for some reason we did!

Fu|SpLeEn: fusion.eu has got a kind of ally with ex cbuk no.1 6K^ - we do general practise coz we need more pcws ‘n stuff atm. But we hope to take part in the CB OpenCup. /me fluffles snoop ;)

How well did those matches go?

Fu|Keefe: We won both with good scores…

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: 14-8 vs. sC (Aztec + prodigy), 13-3 vs. tribal (prodigy) innit

Looking good then. Well you’re certainly doing well in CB, do you have any LAN tournaments/leagues in mind?

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: We had all intentions of going to Primary Strike in Feb, I sadly now cant go because my silly Girlfriend decided to hold her 21^st birthday party on that day…

Fu|Keefe: We have 3 members who are ready to go though…

Fu|SpLeEn: you know how expensive it is to come over by plane? round about 400€ ! and I don’t think the eu team will attend lans really… everyone on his own tho. Hope to attend a german LAN in may with some UK/BE players and me real life mate Hiefman.

As Symp says, things can get in the way of your gaming. How do you all manage being in Fusion around your social life (if you have one) and work?

[DoZ]: Sleep gets in the way of life and cs, so I don't bother with that usually. Each Fusion division has enough players to choose a team from, even if a couple are away. Plus we can borrow players from each division, so we're never without.

Fu|Keefe: We don't organise games on Friday or Saturday but if players are available we may organise a PCW…So we get to go out.

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: I usually end up putting the Girlfriend first, sadly, so that can cause a few arguments and problems. Thankfully though when she IS here, I’m found on the other computer following whats going on in IRC and checking the server for scores.

Fu|SpLeEn: Well if I feel bad I think about Keefe fluffling me with his feet and I'm feeling ways better….rrrrr.. no actually I managed it to sleep just a couple of hours coz uni normally starts @ 8am and takes lotsa time. Weekends are mostly filled with me girly and im just about setting up a rockband and learn to skate ;) im seriously thinking of finding a way NOT to sleep at all.

How "in-advance" do you organise your games? Is it an on-the-spur-of-the moment thing?

[DoZ]: Games are usually arranged a day or two in advance, so I can sort out what tactics we want to try out. The team isn't usually picked until an hour or two before the game is due to start

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: We usually have matches arranged for about a week in advance, but if we have enough online when someone asks for a PCW, we can most times be found accepting.

Fu|SpLeEn: EU team got BaL to manage things… we don’t like short notice games aswell. But we have general tactics for main maps we play… so we don’t bother a pcw too if they in time.

Well, a hot topic at the moment is CS 1.4? What do you think are good and bad points about it, out of what you've seen so far?

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: From what I’ve read so far, it seems good, and as far as I can see the new maps look half decent.... I can’t bloody wait for the anticheat do dah ding-dong to come packaged with it, but sadly there are gonna still be people who get around it :/

[DoZ]: CS 1.4 looks like it'll put an end to the jolt-esque strafe and spray, which I sincerely hate. The improved spectator mode does look promising. I've heard mixed reports about the jumping, and will have to hold judgement on that one. There's also this "Steam" program, which nobody has really told me much about. From what I can tell, it's a... weird... thing... that we may have to pay to use ;-)…Sorry for going all technical on ya there!

Fu|Keefe: I've been waiting for 1st person spectating since I started playing CS :)

Fu|SpLeEn: Well Hiefman as beta tester told me that the jump thingy is totally f***ed up. And I don’t really believe that the anti cheat will work for more then a couple of weeks… wasn’t 1.3 supposed to be Wall-Hack free ? ;) Beside all this I’m really looking forward to hitbox fixes and the 1st person spec.

[DoZ]: 1.4 can't be much worse than 1.3 - 1.3 was just awful.

I know you've probably heard enough talk about cheating to last you a life time? Would you like to add a few words of wisdom to the sea of opinions?

Fu|Keefe: They're not doing anything currently, whatever they do do in 1.4 is unlikely to stop cheating altogether. Cheating's there to stay, put up with it, the accusers are worse than the cheaters imo.

[DoZ]: Cheating will always be around, however determined you are to stop it, there's someone more determined to keep it going. Paranoia is worse and more community destroying than cheating could ever be. It's hard to have a game without being accused, be it public or clan games. We have had several clans demand demos from us from PCWs, which is beyond a joke really!

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: Why cheat FS! It just wastes your time making you think that you can actually do something that you can't. It's like telling someone your a god, when really you're not.

Fu|SpLeEn: I've heard there is a rumour going round that all cheaters got small weeners… so they cheat.. 'tis like buying a Porsche.

What are your views on aliasing?

Fu|Keefe: DoZ plays as '_' if you see a '_' on a public server say hi to DoZ :P

[DoZ]: I alias a lot, I almost never play with my name on publics. I play cs to play cs, not to chat. everybody knows how much I talk on IRC, I make up for my silence in-game ;-) I dislike these wonid bots that are being made public, when you alias you should have every right to remain anonymous, now everyone can find out who you are... I don't like that!

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: My l33t alias has now been found out, people sadly recognise me as Lesbian Trout ... im gonna have to change it now to summit else, maybe Transvestite Donkey... I have nothing against it, its fun to be able to play cs and not have to talk all the time

Fu|SpLeEn: hi there…. If any1 wants to know.. im sl33 or das_leet_uber_soldat *g* I like playing with fakenicks lots.. it’s a mess sometimes.. but I h8 being banned from servers coz they think u a nubi with h4x. BaL really got in trouble coz he always played on Demon Uk with fakenick and got a quiet nice score. Fact is – too many nubi amdins round here; sorry had to say that.

Exactly, I mean big clan's like you :) Ui, 4k, Noc e.t.c…They don't want to be hassled by people about trials and stuff do they?

[DoZ]: We're not up to the standard of those clans yet, but we get hassled just as much ;-)

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: heh. Not really the best of comparisons, but anyway, if anyone asks I just normally tell them to speak with us in irc. I get streams of people sending me PM's in irc, unknown people, like just now :/

Fu|SpLeEn: I don’t like to get cyber offers during games… actually if u want some contact Keefe or fubby.. they are both up for it.

Fu|Keefe: Yeah, theres 50 people in our irc channel, and I have no idea who most of them are.

How long do you think it is before you reach the level of skill of clans like 4k?

Fu|Keefe: Never :D....Nah, its going to take a while, they've been a top clan for a long time.

[DoZ]: 4K came top16 at thecpl I believe? So it's a big target to reach, can't expect to get there too soon.

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: If we keep working at it the way we are, we might get somewhere near them, but I dont think were gonna be able to beat 4k :/

[DoZ]: That depends on the amount of effort we put in. We'll just be happy to plug away like we have been, and get there 1 step at a time. It's the only way you can do it.

Fu|Keefe: I've played 4K only once, it was on de_train at i8, I got 1/16

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: As a few people know, I’ve still got my little screenie of killing 2 members of 4k in a match with one bullet from awp.

4K are they only UK clan in the top 39 clans, they are ranked 19th in the world I think...what do you think of the clan scene in the UK?

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: It's developing, but there is still a major problem with the lack of broadband availability in most areas of the UK... other countries have it so much better, while we pe0ns have to live off the scraps that BT allow :/

[DoZ]: The settings on servers are so varied, the connections so poor... people lose heart playing CS, because of how random it seems at times. Until we have players who realise the randomness of online CS, and work past that, we're not going to develop into the gaming power we could be. The UK is host to some of the finest gamers in the world, and there's plenty more untapped talent waiting to be unleashed.

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: and with NTL possibly going bust, that could cause chaos.

Fu|Keefe: It's not as strong as in other countries, there are a few factors that cause this, poor internet connections being the main one, and that gaming is considered more "geeky" in the UK than in other european countries.

Fu|SpLeEn: Don’t u get T1 lines in sweden for the same price as u get ISDN in UK ?! I wondered why every1 on NiP server had 20er ping :( but as I already mentioned… the cs scene in germany is ways bigger… more freaks ;)

What do you think about the availability of good connections in the UK ?

Fu|Keefe: It’s very poor, compared to countries like Sweden who produce the best gamers.

[DoZ]: Our broadband as a whole is substandard to the rest of the world…Except possibly Poland.

Fu|Keefe: ISDN is totally overpriced!

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: UK connections are poor... Thank God I dont have BT.

Fu|SpLeEn: I just say T-DSL suxx – same prob as UK got with BT I think.

Which players to you look up to most in the CS world?

Fu|Keefe: HeatoN… DoZ is gunna say no-one.

[DoZ]: He gets mentioned all the time, and he'll be mentioned again. Bob. He's a lotta fun to play against, smart player, great aim. But I'm starting to believe he's turning into SkiNNeR with the amount of awping he's doing lately ;-) AnNuM can cause a lot of problems too.

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: im not sure, i never really looked up to any... ive followed some of the top UK clans along... you find that some of the best teams might not have the BEST players, but they have fantastic teamwork.

[DoZ]: It's hard to say with all the cheat accusations that go about, but I don't think cheating is as widespread amongst the top players as some would have you believe.

Fu|Keefe: DoZ is right in saying bob hes the best UK player imo.

[DoZ]: Played Liquid a few times, he didn't seem to die as much as most people when I shoot him, so add him to my list of people ;-)

Well i think we've come to the end, and as Myers would say :), is there anything you would like to say to the CS public?

Fu|SyMpOsIuM: Yer, dont drink and drive, and to keefe, put the sheep down!
