CK3 Interview
Today I sat down with [CK3]-Big_V and we discussed his clan, [CK3]. Currently, [CK3] is the #1 American clan, and has an All-Star lineup of players. They are a Central Division clan, and almost all of their members live in Austin, Texas. Their record is by far the best in CS with a total record of 153 wins, and 23 losses is completely unmatched by any clan in Counter-Strike. They also are some of the most respected guys in Counter-Strike .
How did your clan get started ?
[Big_V]: hmm...well, it started out with 3 original members (hence the "3" in [CK3]. We've been playing games, computer and board, for over 10 years together. All the usual suspects got covered, Doom, Quake, Q2, Duke, et. al. However, when Half-Life came out the 3 of us really took notice. Mostly Valeyard and Hardryv though. I really didn't get interested in the engine until they showed me TFC. We started what we termed an "anti-clan" in TFC at that point. We would go out to pubs, find a real TFC clan and challenge them. Our 3 vs. there 6 or 8. We never lost. Most of these matches were so infuriating to our opponents, that they ended up breaking up. Hence the name change to Clan Killers 3. Then, Hardryv is having lunch with me and Valeyard one day and is describing a new mod that came out that week. A mod called Counter-Strike. He told us where to get it and gave it a very high reccomendation so we did, and we've been loving it ever since.
How much clan experience did your founding members have ?
[Big_V]: Other than what we did in TFC, absolutely none. There were 2 main reasons for that. #1 - we never found a game/mod that we could really get into like CS. And, #2 - we never found guys that we wanted to play with, until we started getting into CS.
As of now, some rate you as the #1 American clan. Has it always been this way ?
[Big_V]: God no! There have been a lot of great American clans.
UGP,
MoL,
NHG,
TDK all come immediately to mind. We started at the bottom and really had No Earthly idea how good we were, until we played MoL that first time and won. That's when we knew we could be good and at least compete with the "Big Dogs" of CS.
Some player's are angry with [CK3] because of what they call "buying players". What do you think of these assumptions ? Do you have
sponsor's or what ?
[Big_V]: Ok this is going to be a long answer so be prepared. The accusations made by warsaw in his interview are not only completely false and untrue, but, his comments are filled with half truths and lies. No player has ever been offered anything to join our clan. period ! Let's make sure I'm clear on that. Now, where the confusion starts is after a guy joins the clan. We do attempt to keep our members up to speed with their computers. If Renaud goes out and buys a new GeForce 2 Ultra, and thus has an extra GeForce2 MX card, we'll get that older card to someone in the clan who, for example, is running a TNT2. It's a trickle down effect. [CK3] takes care of its own bottom line. If I have some extra hardware collecting dust on my shelf, and it'll help one of my members, you better believe i'm going to give it to him, It just makes good sense. I think any and every other clan out there would do the exact same thing if they had the capability. As far as corporate sponsorship goes, we have nothing official yet. But, we are talking to quite a few potential sponsors. The coming year should be very interesting.
Do you consider LAN play or internet play more important
?
[Big_V]: Well, with the advent of CS being an official, money event at not only CPL events, but many others as well, i'd say that the LANs are more important. However, because of their relatively infrequent occurance, Internet play takes a much larger role. In the end, I think each is very important, but, for different reasons. Being able to say you're 2-0 on a LAN is very nice, but, it's not statistically significant. Thats where internet play is key.
You have pretty much the "All-Star" team of American CS.
How do you manage to recruit such good members ?
[Big_V]: Wow, Good question, I think it's really pretty simple. You build something based on integrity, honesty, and the desire to be the very best. If you're successful, the good players will come knocking on your door eventually. Maybe not each and every one, but, enough of them to make you a very solid team. We started out with the very best core of players and ideals. We were all local guys that could get together for lunch, parties, and LANs. We made sure that we all liked and respeced each other, and we grew from that. As is the natural course of online gaming, rollover has taken it's toll on CK3. So, once we felt we had exhausted the local talent, we looked outside of Austin. By that time, we were enough of a force and had a solid reputation in the CS Clan community to attract some of the marquis players available.
Out of all your opponents, who do you always manage to have
the most fun/most competitive play with?
[Big_V]: Well, first off, those 2 are not necessarilly "hand-in-hand". But, [UGP] was always tough, win or loose. [NHG] would also be right there. syn, before they broke up and [rs] before them. As far as pure fun matches go, I always enjoy playing u238 , KoRT, KEG, MoL http://www.mercshideout.com>. Those guys are always very competitive and I know we're going to get a fair, stand up fight from them.
What do you think of all the rampant cheating in Counter-Strike? How do you work with leagues to prevent this ?
[Big_V]: Well, as you yourself know first hand, my personal position, and the position of [CK3] has always been very tough on any form of cheating or exploitation. What most people don't realize is that this is a natural evolution for a popular game. Whenever this many people play a game, a certain percentage of them are going to want to cheat. And, a smaller percentage of those people will have the knowledge and capability to actually create some. So, yes, it's something we do have to deal with. Being a league admin myself, I know that it's and ongoing, never ending battle. We try to identify these cheats as they arrive and create a process to prevent their use as best we can. I honestly think that the cheating is much more prevalent in public server play than it ever is in league play. However, it would increadibly naive of me to think it doesn't happen. The hope is that we can work more closely with the CS development team and Valve to address these problems as quickly as we possibly can.
How much do you know about the European clans? Do you think they pose, another wave of competition at LAN's ?
[Big_V]: Well, up until the last CPL, we really didn't much at all about them. Now however, we're much more aware of them. The
e9's,
mTw's and Clan Z's won't go unknown here anymore. We got a lot of really good scouting information done at the Babbage's CPL. Knowing exactly to expect next time should help us significantly.
How do you run your clan? Do you prefer to try and take the "be nicer because were friends" route? Or do you try and rule with the "iron fist" so to speak ?
[Big_V]: You have to be both, it just depends on the situation. There are some aspects of the daily activities that are not negotiable. Some things are wide open. The bottom line is that the ideals and principles that we founded the clan upon will never be compromised, for any reason. However, I value and respect the opinions of all my clanmates. They are in [CK3] for far more reasons than just being outstanding players. If you can't/don't respect the guys you're playing with, how can you trust them. Especially in the heat of battle and when times get tough. All of my guys understand that [CK3] is not a democracy. It never was and it never will be. Now, with that said, I want the input of my guys on issues that affect them. I may not always agree with them, but, I always listen.
Do you think the alphamin command, which disables some entities, is considered a cheat, since all players could use it. Therefore, no one has an advantage ?
[Big_V]: For the record, just because "everyone can do it" doesn't make it right or ethical. Yes that's a cheat, if it alters the mechanics/physics of the game so such that the spirit of the game is altered or affected, it's cheating in my book. While this may be acceptable in the Quake community, it certainly wouldn't be in CS. The reason being that CS is a much more "realism-based" gameplay.
Do you think CS has improved through the beta's? Which was
your favorite beta ?
[Big_V]: Think as an overall product, it's gotten better and better with each release. You hear a lot of guys saying that 5.2 was the "best beta ever!" and other similar comments. However, I think that those comments are reflective of 1 single aspect of the game - gun accuracy. That was the last beta to have exceptionally accurate guns. It favors the DM style players, and those are really the guys complaining. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing a little bit of accuracy put back into the guns, but, i'm not really upset with the current balistic model either. There are however some gameplay issues that really need to be addressed still.
Thanks Big_V for the interview, I wish yourself and whole of CK3 all the best for the future and may your sucess continue.
