BattleField 2 Review
By WazMeister
I remember when BF1942 came out boy was it awesome, a game with 64 players in 1 server all jumping in vehicles and having real all out war against friends in a online world! I was blew away by it for about 2 weeks then I went back to CS but that’s another stories this is about BF2… but the moral of that story is you get 3 kinds of people in the BF (BattleField) series.
The first kind is the person who really loves everything about it; they know every official name for the guns, choppers, APC’s etc. They know the ins and outs of all the maps and write tactics on paper when ever they are out and have a brain storm these are the players I respect. They sit on teamspeak calling out commentary “We got an apache 10204 to the diameter heading to flag 1 of NE co-ords 9- 13-“. They inspire me and make me want to be that elite pro with skills seeping from my arse.
The second kind is the ones who have no clue what’s going on, what team they are on and at sometimes not even sure how to shoot. These are the players you see standing on the spot for repeats of 5 seconds spinning around and moving to another spot looking like a tourist while being blown up by an air strike and thinking someone has hacks. If they were to use teamspeak you can imagine them saying in a weird voice “oh so now I shoot this to get a point. “Oh it was a team mate”.
The third person is my style of play which I regret intently, it’s the style where as soon as you spawn you sprint for that jeep and skud uber fast to get the flag points while running over oncoming team mates, the player that sits on teamspeak with his friends going “Watch this…!” While pummelling over 5 team mates who want/need a lift. The person who when spawns and see’s a fellow team mate get the jeep before me with the reply of me getting pure angry and tensed shooting them dead and then nicking the jeep and laughing down teamspeak while spitting “ha ha, I got the jeep by shooting a team mate!!” To me these are the worse players and I admit I am one…………………
I don’t do it on intent to just pure p*** fellow players off I do it because I have myself and a few friends in teamspeak and I just tend to crack up laughing stabbing up a team mate then reviving him to then nick his jeep while typing to him “SUCKER!!!!!”.
It sends a chill up my spine which leads to one fat stonking hard on like the same kind you get when you cook a marshmallow 100% right crisp on a fire which takes years of craftsmanship! I’d see one of my friends whom are in TS and I say “get in my jeep” when he comes towards me I just smash into him just to get thrills of laughter……..
I’d get a jeep full of player’s friends or strangers take us up a mountain while screaming on TS “its A SHORT CUT!!! TRUST ME!!!” then whizzing off a big arse mountain which results in the demolish of us all bleeding and screaming and me getting slagged off over TS with the usual “You suck so much Waz you noob!!!” or “I swear your gonna get ranked best team killer in BF2!!!!”.
To me I just found it totally awesome…… that’s my style of play the third one through all my BF1942 experience, all my BF:Vietnarm experience to BF2.
The problem was after about 5 hours of playing BF2 on a ranked server something strange happens, you seem to get a little buzz from hearing that fellow geek across the country on the voice comms saying “Need backup… rush over now”. You get that little pulsate in your manhood like a heart beating when your commander says “Incoming Air strike move your patrols!” the whole essence of team play.
It seems that EA have taken BF1942 and all the other 50 add-ons and created a drug addiction for teamwork which forces you to play like the First type of player!
That’s me now in BF2! No more am I the lunatic man in jeeps running over team mates or calling on air strikes as the commander on our starting spawn area to kill as many as I can on same team! Now I sit at work polishing off the pencil and scribbling ideas down for tactics and squads while dribbling from excitement.
BattleField 2 not only has far superior infantry combat compared to BF1942 (1942 felt really slow, Ridgley and blocky while on foot combat, BF2 is smooth as my anal after washing it) but it has every essence of teamwork which totally makes this game a must buy!
You have your squads where you can have up to 6 players in a group using in game voice comms, the squad leader dishes out commands while his sqaudies can spawn on the leader and get some real teamwork going to take over flags. I seen squads take over flags of full teams before due to some real teamwork and this is where it’s all at BF2.
Since CS 1.6 I always wanted a game to move to and I’ve tried plenty… even sims online and that got me banned after walking into someone’s house and asking them to suck the s*** out of this………
And finally Source came which sucked the …… out of everything but BF2 has answered our prays.
The graphics are nice, the game play is beautiful, and the teamwork is all there! All it needs is troops to make clans and get this competitive game play going!
With the amount of teamwork aspects and tools in BF2 you get a real sense of competitive play + with ranked servers to upgrade your self with more guns it can get addictve
Ranked servers are servers which keep your score and you get promoted from Private to Lt Etc to unlock more guns for that class. It keeps your entire kill/death ratio, maps played to number 1 victim, it totally rocks!
There are a few errors though so nothing is perfect, the in game browser is more slow and ridged than a granny giving head, it takes forever to login your account and after 50 tries to make an account you end up giving false details just to play your dam game.
What happened to the days of install/play/own!
What can I say...? BF2 is a killer so go buy it now or just do as my brother does buy a £1.50 plastic pistol and run around the garden saying “bang bang” while stepping in dog poo and acting as if it was a mine by rolling in it and screaming “I’ve been hit!!!”
Thanks for reading!

The attack chopper is quality, it's very hard when you first fly it but you can really get good, and before long you're camping out the spawn point for it after dying and holding down the e key ad infinatum. When you get really good you can do mammoth runs with multiple rearming trips back to the airstrip, solo midair flag captures and buzz through streets at ground level for fun. Best handling vehicle in any multiplayer combat game ever.
The jets are a bit of a pain in the arse to fly unless you can use a joystick, but I couldnt see an option to use one.
Anyway I intend to buy the game retail and start playing in a clan, I'm sure there'll be a lot springing up with CSers past and present. Imo this game is the biggest ever threat to the CS scene, as enthusiasm on here for the actual game seems to be at an all-time low, and BF2 is extremely good.
At the moment though the infantry combat is a lot better than it was in bf1942 (which was pretty f***ing shocking tbh), but it's still a poor comparison to any decent proper multiplayer FPS. Who cares though when the rest of the game sets new standards accross the board.
You will need a fast computer with a monster graphics card and a gig of ram to run with the detail up though, 9800s and the like will struggle to get playable fps without the graphics looking pretty shocking. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

You had some really intense fire fights and there was only 1 tank for each team. No helicopters or planes and I found that to be alot of fun. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

BF2 is excellent! A lot of developers could learn from it.
Hey Venomous did you install the BF2 NVIDIA drivers? They might help with the crashing mate?

But yeh, good review, bf2 is amazing im really going to try and get into clan games and see what they're like. But like people have said the Commander/Squad aspects of the game create a level of teamplay that ive personally never seen on a public server for any game. Tis great. speaking of the second type of player, I caught my housemate stealing a jet just to fly to a flag, and parachute out while the plane crashed, like a right lamer. I had a right go at him. :| [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
