Err did you hear that?

The use of sound in entertainment is very important to us but we take so much of it for granted. If you woke up one morning and couldn't hear anything you'd panic and go see a doctor. If you turn on the television and you can't hear anything you know your brother has been watching porn movies late at night with the volume down (oops did I say that)? You just turn up the volume and expect the rancid tones of women's magazine ads or Richard and Judy.

In Counter-Strike, sound is probably one of the most important things the game has to offer. I hear/read many rants about this recoil setting and that damage setting but I never heard/read anything about the sound of CS - am I to assume that the whole community is happy with the sounds in the game? In my opinion the sound in CS is great, although mappers could do a better job of setting up how much of it you can hear between levels (de_vertigo).

Let's start with the common "Arrgggh I have got no sound". I think that most people are upset about this because they can't hear all the fun and action that is going on around them, but more importantly they know the fear of silence. As an example the other day I was praccyin' with my clan on Italy. It was a one-on-one situation and I was CT. We did a little cat-and-mouse round-and-round the mulberry bush bollox in and out of the house at T spawn. Then we started to use the walk function (silent). I pride myself on my stealth capabilities but knew that the other guy is a crack shot and my skillz are not as good as his. When I finally spied him sneaking round a corner to go back to the house I followed him, and as I moved up the stairs I gave him a few good licks to the head with my carbine. After silently moving back down the stairs I was greeted by the in-game message "WTF!! I am being shot by the invisible man!!" Although I was shot and killed in the end, I had completely freaked him out by not letting myself be seen, and more importantly heard.

In CS although the gun/grenade/radio sounds may make your blood pump faster, there is nothing like the sound of silence interrupted by a quick foot step or a clunky ladder to make your mouse grip tighten and your trigger finger a little more twitchy. The way I see it is if you can't hear them then you can't see them. I've seen many people killed because they were running around big clumpy boots making loads of noise and then *Boom* they're dead. It does annoy me that some people don't make effective use of the sound in CS and end up running off away from the enemy, when the enemy had just made enough noise to indicate he had dropped is gun all his ammo and some spare change down a ladder.

I am not saying do this or start doing that, I just thought I should bring up this topic because I think it is important and have not heard much about what players and how players use/react to sound. Next time you can't hear anything, be careful because that little prickle of instinct you feel on the back of your neck will no doubt be the point of my knife.

nice articele - i still think there needs to be some more sounds though - like new radio commands - the main one i feel is needed is "Team Split Up" i know this is claimed to deter people from working together - but the reason i need it is when u r playing a de_ map and u have to splitup to cover the bomb sites

whilst lookin in the cs sounds directory u will c there is a few other radio commands there that i feel would really help the game if they was implemented into it

also the annoying thing - people who make loadz of noise in sewers etc and end up getting u killed - it aint just newbies that do it - some of you "vets" are kill hungry and just rush down there :( [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

You forgot to mention the sound of a reload: the most important in the game... nothing gives the 'come on i'm defensless' vibe more than that sound... So exploit it. I'll often have a deagle sidearm as a precaution (hint: if you have a three button mouse, use the third as a switch to sidearm) so what'll do after a round of gun battle is retreat, and in the blistering silence, i'll reload my main gun... but also select the sidearm in the menu.. so if he diecides to nail you, you can surprise him with a few rounds of USP. or Glock... if not, you just reloaded... ahh... better... Let me relate a true story to you:
My friend was a CT on jeepathon. Now you know how you can place the bomb in the jeep? The idiot didn't turn on his speakers and he was driving a jeep he found at the bomb site LOOKING for the bomb. Finally someone typed,"The bombs in the car stupid".He looked down and BOOM,no more ct.

Anyway, sounds are damn good.THe only gripe I have with it is when some AK'ing T jumps in my face spraying 7.62 bullets all over me.And THAT was when it was a deathly silence...One on one!!In the internet cafe it was pretty crapped up,the entire cafe was silent for oncE!I got the biggest fright when the bugger just jumped on me.

Imagine a grenade flying at you from behind and you don't know.Suddenly it explodes and you go flying. WOn't that be surprising. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

nice article m8

Most annoying thing is when people blatantly disregard sound like you said ie hear someone near by yet head away in the other direction, even though it was obvious where the noise was.

Ladders are another great way to hear because still to this day most CS players don't crouch up em, im happy for them to keep on doin so :) I always crouch up ladders and it can result in kills ie ct snipers in de_cbble (ct tower).

I always wondered though, are the gun sounds in CS good?? I've never actually heard the majority of the guns so I dunno....anyone? [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Good article needs to cover more "bases" though, many people do not recognize the importance sound makes in CS as it does in real life. Most times you will hear someone long before you see them. I love nothing more than sneaking around de_vertigo while one on one and planting the bomb and sneaking away undetected... SH33R PHYUN!!!@#$@# Makes the other player think real highly of himself! ^_^ Silencers, walking, crouching and even the type of automatic fire distinguishing weapons and lots more are all important things to use and to have knowledge of. Being a guitarist IRL, I have heard this for years and it rings true even in CounterStrike... "let your ears be your guide"

BTW, I own several firearms IRL and have experience with quite a few, notably a MAK-90, a AK-47 variant; and the sounds are almost dead on... at least for the AK.. ^_~ [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Agree ... good article. One point worth mentioning is the medium through which you hear your sound.
I've heard it mentioned before in game, but it is a valid point that you can hear footsteps an awful lot better through headphones than through speakers. If you're playing a quiet level, or there's not many on, then consider plugging your headphones in while you're walking around.
It's also worth remembering the advantage that surround sound can be for those lucky enough to own it. I have a four-point surround speaker set up and I can vouch for the fact that it works. Not only when you are getting shot and you can hear where you're being shot from, but also the distant sound of gunshots, meaning that they're coming from behind you, so turn around and go meet them.
Very insightful comment about a subject not often discussed in detail in Counter-Strike posts ... keep up the good writing :) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

In regards to the comment that was made about people just ignoring sound. I've found that if you don't have surround sound it can be very difficult to know where the other guy is. I have one speaker in front of me and that all so when I hear a sound it's really scarry because it could be from anywhere. So sometimes you may want to run away from sound because of your innability to know where the sound is coming from due to your speakers.

I have many time accidentally hit my windows key while in the middle of playing cs. Well there is an easy solution right? Just hit alt-tab to back in. But when i go back into the game my sound is gone!!!
I cant figure out how to get the sound back without completely exiting the server and the game and reconnecting!!! this is a complete waste of time for such a stupid mistake!!!

Can anyone help me with this problem. please email me -- ndsoccer01@aol.com

Are there any programs that can disable the windows function keys on the keyboard???

Thanks

headphones.

what more can i say. head phones, headphones, headphones. Speaking as a dm and cs veteran (been playing them both since they came out), I can say with no hesitation that sound is the most important factor in my game. And what's more, the wonderful people at valve have added support for EAX as well as the original A3D. I ahve a gametheater xp rack from Hercules with EAX and A3D, and I tell you, there is nothing more valuable than the directional sound you can receive wearing headphones with a decent soundcard. Anything from hearing multiple footsteps (knowing to get the &*^k outta there 'cos yer outnumbered), hearing the reload of someone just around the corner, to hearing that the enemy has got a para, and to steer well clear.
There are separate sound packs available which may improve your enjoyment of the game, but the sounds that are provided are more than adequate. Radio commands are excellent. A few more of them would be good though. I would very much like to see the submenu feature added to the radio commands, like they have in UT, as it would create the possibility for more, and most likely, specific commands.

Good fragging to you all,

I think sound is all very well and good, but to be honest to deaf gamers like me, its not necessarily. Sure, the backdrop of guns firing tells me that the enemy is near, but I don't rely on sound, yet I can still own people by using my eyes.

If you're deaf, then your eyes become extremely important, in life, and in gaming. I feel that my deafness has made me a better gamer, because my reflexes are very quick to react to movements, and thats important too. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I have had some problem with the same as u. If you go out in windows and back there is no sound. The solution is simple. Just press your escape key, no you come to the menu, and choose resume game. And voilá the sound is back.

I agree, the soundeffects is vital for survival. Many times i have survived because of a sneaky living. And opponents that hasnt understood the importance of stealth. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

rip out the windows key, it's useless... it just spoils your cs game. i ripped out both win keys, still - the combination of alt+space is bad :((. btw - have seen some keyboards of profi SC/BW players -> all "useless" keys ripped out :)) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

if you lose sound while accidently alt-tab or windows key, you can try to press esc when u get back into the game and press resume. If that doesnt work, try connecting games through console next time. Lets say the server u want to play on is 23.12.3.2:27005, just load your console (don't click "play cs";) on the main menu, and when console comes on, type in "connect 23.12.3.2:27005". If you alt-tab or window key, just get back in the game, and press esc, then resume, the sound should be back (this works 99% of the time if u connect games thru console) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

You will have no problem with the sound disappearing if you start CS in window-mode (works with both OpenGL and Direct3D). Just add "-win" (without the quotes) to the CS shortcut*. Now you'll be able to switch between applications in Windows (receive ICQ mess, check your volume etc) without losing sound in CS! The only caveat to this is that you will probably need to play CS with the same resolution as your desktop. This is of course only a problem if your computer can't handle that.

GL & HF

*Right-click on the shortcut, klick "Properties". The top line should read something like:
"c:half-lifehl.exe" -game cstrike -console -win [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Well, I'm too are nearly daef since birth but I DO recognize the importance of sounds in CS. Although having problems to hear the footsteps of the enemy even when wearing headphones, I can distinguish the direction (left/right) and the volume of gunfire. This helps me pretty a lot to locate the enemy, sneak to them silently and give them a nice litte round of M4A1 in an ambush with silencer on.
In many aspects, however, God Personified, is right. When hearing less you become more awrare of motions and especially the radar. I have a quick look at the radar about every 5-10 seconds to know, which place is safe and where enemies might lurk.
Even if I sometimes find myselves making lots of noise and are killed due to this, I'd say that I'm a fairly good player by now and mostly find myselfes in the upper part of the stats.
Last, but not least, when playing a 5on5 or so, It's surely more important to react and aim quickly when having spotted an enemy than having heard them some time before.
To the WIN-KEY problem: There are programs in the net that will disable both winkeys. I've actually downloaded one of them a few days before, but not tested yet. Fell free to contact me via ICQ #131157320 if you it.

I'm from Germany, so don't be surprised, if there are some mistakes or strange words in this comment. Anyone finding my mistakes may keep them ;-)

To those who asked for a program to disable keys, you can try ZDKeyMap, its available in www.zdnet.com
Use the search utility, search for "keymap"

Yes very good article. Sound is a wonderful aspect of CS. I was once in the house on the T spawn in Italy and I was the sole surviving T guarding the hostages. There were at least 5 remaining CTs that one by one came to the house to try and kill me. By using stealth and listening I was able to take out all 5 with out getting a scratch. Luckily I had an M4A1 from the round before.

One of the recent changes to the sounds was the addition of being able to hear radio messages from a teamate over your radio. This has proved disasterous when you're trying to be quite and your newbie teamate keeps yelling "GO GO GO!" over the radio over and over again. Is it still possible to turn off the radio? I'm jealous of the dudes with surround speakers :P

I play in stereo but I've found myself unconciously "turning my head" when I hear gunfire or footsteps that aren't definitely from the left or right. By c**king your player's head to one side like that you can zero in on the sound pretty quickly.

I also agree about annoying teammates who charge around while you're trying to be sly, blowing your cover. Very irritating. I usually leave them to it and choose another route, they just lost their backup. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Very nicely written article.

Well in answer to those Noob's who ran frantically around causing a big ruckus, i have only one thing to say, use them as bait :) What better way to make use of them? While the opposing team can only hear one person running around, walk towards ur team mate who is running and hide, when they get killed, kill the enemy! or well, if you want to be nice, you can try to kill the enemy before your team mate gets killed :)

for those who compete in tournaments, i also find it a good strat, except in this one you DON'T let your team mates die. walk to a certain area with your whole team, have 2 run around, and when they come after you only thinking there is two, they'll be in for a big surprise. rah good article and my post is way late but its the first proper article on sound ive seen for ages
sound in cs massively important and the reason it so important is that noobs just dont get it When you know a map pretty much inside out and hear a footstap from way off you know where the enemy is round a bout in your head and if some1 makes a load of noise you wait for them and kill them all of a sudden noobs shout out you must be a hack cos you arent f***ing deaf
cs communty hasnt gone turd its just been flooded by so many noobs which isnt a bad thing but it seems 70 percent of them are angry 12 year olds who dont want to learn to master a game but just rack up kills str8 away deathmatch style thats what really gets on my tits theyre the same type of ppl who use cheats to complete a game rather than earn the cheats after completing a game my idea is round them up and glok them all to death but when cs gradually starts dying out all these ppl will leave in droves and only a few hardcore will remain without support from (much support) anyway valve only problem then is hackers will probably kill cs dead but until that day we have to put up with idiots with voice comm screaming that their nappies wet [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Recently, after getting p***ed off over losing my sound when someone IM'ed me....I discovered my way back to sound! Every time ive used this it works, but i know a freind running XP who said it didnt work. I am running Win2kPRO so if you use that go for this:
If you lose sound, hit ctrl alt del and click task manager. then from there highlight CS in the menu, and click Switch To.... And CS will pop back up, with sound. Boom. THAT easy! amazing! But then again, am I the only one to waste 200 bucks on 2kpro? Heh, its worth it =) Hope it helps some of you? Try it with XP, maybe youll get lucky!
