CS Addictiveness - Just One More?

Counter-Strike is the most played online FPS game ever - yesterday, today and no doubt tomorrow. Countless people have wondered why this is, and just as many have written articles on the subject. This may be simple curiosity, or it may be that they hope to repeat the same success by using their theories. Either way, people have come up with different ideas each time. This little article represents my own thoughts on the subject.

The most common answer to the CS success story is how every round and every game is different - my idea is just the opposite. It's the familiarity and similarity of every round that provides the game with a kind of "Just one more round" factor, making you want to keep on playing until you collapse from lack of food/sleep/porn.

Think about this. If you win the round, if you kill everyone and have a perfect game, are you fulfilled and can you now leave the server happy in the knowledge that you have reined supreme? Nope, 'fraid not. Getting you to keep playing a game when you’re winning is easy, because everyone loves winning and to get the chance to do it again is too good to pass up. Losing however, getting you to keep playing when you suck is something different altogether

In Deathmatch, you die and then you respawn instantly. However, when you go back to where you died the person who killed you will be long gone. In CS, things tend to work differently. Maps and gameplay follow a pattern that the Terrorists start at one side and the Counter-Terrorists at the other. This makes the game much like acting out a defined set of moves each time with very slight changes. So, when you get killed one round you have the desire to extract revenge and do better next time. Since you’re going to get the chance to do the same thing all over again next round, you stay put in the server - even if it means wetting your pants. As the rounds continue to come at you, you have the opportunity to learn what your enemy is doing, the opportunity to outsmart them, and above all else the opportunity to beat their ‘bitch ass’ down.

It all kind of follows the age-old cliché of "Tomorrow is another day", though in this case "Next is another round". This round will be different, you saw what they did last time and you'll be ready for them this time. You'll do better. You'll win. As long as the enemy doesn't do something different this time of course, which they inevitably will - giving you once more the same effect at the end of the next round, and so continuing the endless cycle and addiction. Just one more? Not likely.

Of course there are other things that affect people's enjoyment of the game, the fact it’s a team-game for one (although a lot of the time you wouldn’t know it). I remember playing Beta 5.2 and getting completely immersed in the game because it felt as if you were part of something every time you played. You weren’t just a lone warrior killing people for no reason; you were part of an elite squad sent out to save the hostages (or stop that from happening). There was a great sense of fulfilment when you saved the life of a teammate by killing his attacker just before he fired the last fatal bullet, and that was a feeling not acquired by deathmatch.

Unfortunately however, the community appears to be in such a state that I haven’t felt that feeling in a long time. Saving someone’s life goes unnoticed, and usually all you receive are calls from that person saying, "HEY, THAT WAS MY KILL!" All the team spirit has left, with only kill-hungry idiots remaining. This for me is the reason beta 5.2 is loved by so many people, and many consider it to be the best of all the CS versions – not because it was more balanced or it was actually better, but simply because the people were still nice and there wasn’t any paranoia.

Anyway, I digress. Counter-Strike is loved by thousands of people and each of them no doubt have their explanations for why they like it – and I'm sure it's a combination of things. So tell us why you like the game...

Very good points about why we continue playing hour after hour, I have to agree that it's very hard to stop when you're on a roll.

I agree, u need 2 play with friends, or if not, make em on the server, dont annoy every1 by saying 'i own' or something like, its pathetic and ppl dont respect u 4 it, saying thx 4 the backup is plentiful and makes ppl wanna help in the next round or so (well, most ppl ne way)

and remember, cs is for fun :) its not about the scores, remember that and u will get more out of it :D

Yeah well there are still some communities out there in CS that promote sportsmanlike conduct. It's more of a server to server thing now. One server will have nice people, and great admins, and a good website that brings people together. And the next server you goto, you get banned for going 5:1 by some admin who probably just got CS a few months ago. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I was a late starter when it came to CS. Not through choice but simply because I only got a PC powerful enough to run HL after CS 1.0 was released. The reason I play CS is not for its realism or any such nonsense. I play because its bloody good fun... or at least it should be. Recently I've just become disillusioned with CS. Although I try not to let it bother me, I can only take being called a cheater as a compliment for so long, before it simply becomes annoying. Ah well.

I only play on public clan servers, the public public servers are irritating and everyone's out to kill each other. When you're a regular and you know all the other regulars then it's good, and people thank you more and if they rant at you its in good humour...

at least that's what i find... [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I'd have to agree with everything there, great article dude. I started playing at beta6 (all those many versions ago...) when the 'leccy shotgun made that terrible screetching noise, and the guns were accurate. There were no cheats, and i also felt that sense of 'belonging' every round. And i always, ALWAYS thank people for saving my life. (Mainly because it happens so much). With a name like SpinDoc you would have to be the negative influence wouldn't you:)

But if you really want "just one more turn" addiction Civ 1, 2 and now very much III does it for me:)

Still play CS everynight on our own clan server (might as well play Quake DM than play on public servers) and after time you eventually build up a little community of regulars who play good team games.

Bring back the option to switch off individual scores and have team scores only I say. That would quickly make the both the DM lamers and cheats leave:) It's a team game after all. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

SpinDoc, I take every criticism as it comes and try and learn from it - and with that in mind could you be a bit more specific please? You say the answer to why people play CS is obvious, then can you tell us what it is? I've seen loads of different theories, and I'd like to hear your thoughts.

ironz0r, yeah I know there are some MMORPG's that are played more than CS :) What I meant was, that it was the most played FPS. Sorry 'bout that.

I'd have to agree with most of the comments here, playing on the same server regularly really does make the game more fun - but unfortunately I don't have a regular at the moment. One of the most fun things about CS for me at Beta 5.2 was the server I played on, and the people I played with. It was the SGF clan server, and it used to play cs_siege 24/7. Man that was fun :)

After that server closed, I joined a clan and played on our own server - Mr Flibbles. After a while though, the server just got worse and worse and lag rendered it unplayable as the server was used for other things. The clan split, and the server closed.

Now when ever I play, I just choose a server and hop on - hoping for the best. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Well said. I like providing cover for my team with the AWP, and I rush with them (so I'm not an AWP camper hoe). nice article, I've met plenty of people that always say u took my kill when u save em or atleast help em out. Any more its like everyone is conserned about stats which is bogus. The other thing is, and what ruins the game, the everlasting topic of cheaters. You go into a 24 hour Dust server with 20 n00b's fresh out of training ready to get owned and they moment u kill one ur a hax0r and ur kicked. they need to improve the engine so cheats are harder to make, but that'll never happen........... Yea, all very good comments. I've been playing off and on since one of the 5.x and I just remember when estate first came out and playing train for hours on end. The sence of comradeship(sp) you got from knowing theres a team at your back (even if they couldnt care less about your welfare:) is a great feeling that is harder and harder to find in todays servers. But cs is still addicting for many of the reasons you metioned and there are still a few gem servers who have real players on them.

On the stealing peps kills issue that plagues the team play every where. If i see a ct running in circles around my buddie (or just team mate) there is no way im not going to shoot my gun at them... stealing kills or not its survival and instict by now. I think servers should be able to enforce hidden stats as an option, it might get you thinking "hey my teams winning" instead of "SH%$% ive got to get a few more killz..." thats it.

course i dont hate dust anymore, shoot i dont even see anything but my name anymore....IHATEDUST...thats it. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

What's your name in-game GT, maybe I've seen you before :)

When Flibbles was our clan server, there was a group of regulars that played on there all the time - and we all got to know each other pretty well.

There was my clan at the time - SAS, and the clan we were allies with DHOA ... or something like that - they changed their name to Bio-H after a while. There was also Captain Pants and the TG-5 clan, and the UK-SEAL clan pretty much lived on there. It was great fun, because every time you would join the server would be full of friends and clanmates. Then of course, one of the other parts of CS kinda got in the way, clan politics :). Bio-H were the people running the server, and they split up after a load of bickering. SAS, the clan I was part of split a few days later - after a large battle where a group of 7 people ended up starting a mutiny against the really crappy leadership (I was one of the 7). After that, the server died and didn't come back for months - and when it did it was just a normal public server, with none of the old regulars and it lagged like hell. I only played on it a couple of times, wasn't much fun.

I kept in touch with some of the Bio-H guys, but most of them I don't really remember. The 7 guys I left with I still talk to everyday on ICQ and our forums, we started up a clan called SBC before splitting because of the pressure we were putting ourselves under just started to suck. We still play games occasionaly, sometimes CS and sometimes MoH, RtCW or Tribes 2. The UK-SEAL guys went on to be really succesful, and stayed around for months and won a couple of big tournaments. Quite recently however, the died. I had kept in touch with most of them, in their IRC server and in ICQ. Unfortunately I don't see any of them anymore, though some are from the UK so might be visiting this site :) Lastly, TG-5. I was made an honourary member of this clan, and really I don't know what they were all about - they were probably the most insane group of people you could meet and you could tell they were just playing to have fun - I truly hope they're still having the same fun somewhere.

All in all, I guess this is really one of the areas that makes CS good that I missed (and there are many), the relationships you form by joining clans - the arguments, the friendships and the memories.

The SGF and Flibble servers are my fondest gaming memories... and I'd give anything to have them back. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Although this article was written almost six months ago I felt the need to comment on it because it happens to be a foremost thought in my mind lately.

I've been playing CS off and on since it was first out. The only reason it was off and on and not constantly was because my computer lacked the ability to run it well and I had no cable modem which I believe are 2 factors that almost necessary to enjoy the game now a days.

When I recently moved and aquired a cable modem I got back into it heavy, playing every day for hours on a server I found early. I am a stat whore, I'll admit it. Not the stat whore that rescues hostages in an empty server though. I love stats. I don't buy a game (especially sports ones) unless it has good stats. The server was great, almost no lag except when it was lagging on my end, great stats, mostly great people but like all good things it came to what seemed like a quick end. I felt like the game lost a little something there, but i quickly found a new server with the same great stats and a few good people.

Anyways (i tend to go off on tangents, I suck at writing) I am always looking for a game that will keep my intrest like CS, because sometimes I find myself not wanting to play anymore (usually when my score is in the s***ter) and yet in the past 6 months I must have spent nearly a grand on games, gaming systems and new computers looking for something with that same CS addictability and I can't find a damn thing. I don't know what it is but man its got me hooked like heroin.

Tribes 2 is a game I come to every now and again.
I never got more than a third of the way through Max Payne.
RtCW held my attention in SP till the 3rd level, and MP for a while longer.
The MoH demo held me for 2 weeks, and I'll get the full game soon.

One of these days I'll find something... maybe Team Fortress 2... [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I heard a rumor of something very disturbing today - 1.4 is going to have stamina. I realize this brings about more of a sense of realism to the game but it might kill the game. I mean I dont jump often really so i doubt it will affect me as much as some people who make a living (no pun intended) out of jumping around like idiots.

i feel there is no reason for cs being addictive.. is there a reason?
although.. as im typing this i just thought, is it something to do with the subconcious fact that there is so much terrorism in the news at this time... do we all have a secret agenda to exact revenge on the "enemy"? whether u favour the terrorists or ct's does it reflect your personna? or is it just me sitting here watching news night on bbc2...

The articles kinda old now, so this is my first time here in a while at least. :)

I do think there is a reason to why it's so addictive, I mean, there must be. If there isn't, then that would imply that it's just some sort of fluke that so many of us sit up till 5am drinking energy drinks just so we can play "one more round".

If there isn't a reason, it sure puts my life in a darker light.

I don't really think it has much to do with the news of terrorism on TV all the time, since it's only recently that terrorism has been brought to the forefront of the media and CS has been going for over 2 years now. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

You made a very good point, very true. But I have a different view on why we play counter-strike for hours on end, and why were addicted to it like we are, I think its that fact that we have a sense of another world. We go on counter-strike, and we play with other, and wipe out the bad guy with others, or try to. Its a sense of getting away from the world you're in for a while, and I think we seem to say 'one more round' because we either want our revenge on the 'b***h asses' that killed us and mocked us, or we just play want to stay in our imaginary life away from our real one :) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
