How do I contribute/add to this FAQ?
Use the form RIGHT HERE to submit your question/answer and providing it's suitable for the FAQ, it'll be added. Alternatively you can send your e-mails to art@ukterrorist.com
How do i get the models into 3d studio max?
Get sgt_york's importer either from Sgt York's Site, or here at UKTerrorist or if you have custom models, you need to import into milkshape and then export into a format that 3d studio max can understand.
I have photoshop and I made a scene in milkshape/3dsmax how do i make it so i can use photoshop with it?
Render the picture and save as a format that photoshop can understand.
How do i import a map into 3d studio max?
You can't. You have to create the maps yourself. Run around inside the map and take screenshots and use those as reference.
I want to use textures from a counter-strike map. How?
Get a program called wally from http://www.telefragged.com/wally/.

In half-life games, the textures are stored in .wad files. Open the .wad file(s) and then export it to a format that 3d studio max can import (.jpg, .bmp etc.). Then when you want to use it in 3d studio max click the hammer button on the right and select "Asset browser" under that.

Find the file and click and drag it into the materials box.

I am using 3d studio max but rendering models gives me blurred textures. Why?
When you apply a map as a diffuse map, max sets a default blur to 1.0 - change it to 0.1 instead. Also, anything other than using a scalar of the bitmaps size will blur it. If your texture is 100x100, then using 60x40 will blur it. Use a UVW map modifier and use a "fit to bitmap" then select the gizmo and scale it. A lot of the time you can't do this, but sometimes it works. Another thing is to use large textures.
How do I make models have hands with fingers? do I download them?
No, you download a program called milkshape, then you open up a V_model in milkshape. After exporting the V_model as a .3ds file, you import the V_model into your current scene, apply a mesh editor modifier to your player model/V_model, and attach the hands to him (ofcoursre you delete the current hands he has, and the gun thats in the V_model). There are a couple of ways of doing this, but the above is what I find easiest.
Where do I get milkshape?
You can get a trial version at http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/
Can someone send me 3DS?
If you want to pirate £5,000 software, at least you have to work for it.
How do I move the models around once I have them in 3d Studio max?
If they're in biped mode, select the bone that corresponds with the area u want to move and rotate it.

If it isn't in biped mode or doesn't have any bones of some sort, then you have to select individual verticies and rotate that, which is a lot harder and messy.

If you don't have character studio, then you can't have bones.

How can I rotate/move my ENTIRE model at once?
Select the "root node" which is the diamond shaped thing in the guys waist. rotate that.
Same applies to moving.
I can move my model forward, backward, left, and right but I can't move him up and down what do I do?
You have to turn "figure mode" off.

Select your model

Click the motion (a wheel) tab on the right and unclick the little stick figure picture that will come up.

How do I make puddles/blood in 3d studio max?
Take the line tool and set the corner to curve or bezier or whatever the hell makes the thing curvy. Make your shape. Then extrude it a little bit(depends on the scale of ur scene). After that just apply meshsmooth to it and a material and you're done.
How do you make holes in walls (bullet holes?)?
  1. Make the shape with a line and extrude it.
  2. Move the shape into the wall (you're going to use it like a cookie cutter and carve out stuff).
  3. Select the wall and goto shapes>compound and click the boolean thing.
  4. Go down and click "select operand B" and select the cookie cutter.
  5. Make sure its subtraction (A-B) and it should be done.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- use the paintbrush to make a dark red dot (size according to the size of the blood spurt)
- Set the layer to color burn

- Use the smudge tool on varying pressures to smear the blood or use the paintbrush with a fade number consistant with the length of the spurt

- Then take a brush that looks like a spray and set the brush to disolve and place some little specks around the entrace/exit wounds to simulate fragments

You cant import models into PS.
I'll give you the drawn out process because you asked in an intelligent manner:

Download Milkshape (http://tritenchi.homestead.com/Milkshape.html)

Decompile the specific model in Milkshape (Tools > Half-Life > Decompile MDL File)

Import the reference SMD (File > Import > Half-Life SMD). If importing a player model then import both the skeleton and the triangles. If it's a weapon then only click the triangles.

Go to the Joints tab. Select Bip01 R Hand. Click SelAssigned. Note how a bunch of red dots appear on the hand in the 2d windows. Now go to the Groups tab. Click on the gun from the list and click on Select. Note how the gun highlights red along with the hand dots. Go back to the Joints tab. Click assign. Make sure it worked by clicking SelAssigned again. Now there should be red dots around the gun as well as the hand. The gun is now atatched to the hand.

Press the animate button in the bottom right, and then select specific limbs etc to move and do so.

Now that you have what you want (pose wise) take a screen shot of it or export it to 3d studio max.

really need a tutorial on this....
ok, step by step..
open max
use importer to bring a model in with biped
select objects panel/or create =] either way its the first icon and there is 6-7 icons running to your right, its the last one (gears) (on your right, the one with icons including modifiers, helpers and animation
select the last icon (has two gears on it)
select biped
goto select object by name (upper taskbar) it looks like a list
select a body part eg: forearm
select and move the part (it should move)
if it doesnt, ensure you have Character Studio installed (i dont think you could get to the biped tab if it wasnt anyway)
to rotate and move the model
select its centre biped (if you goto select object by name, and choose show tree or something, you will see its a hireachy with biped being the master
goto animation tab on your right, you will see arrows for up/down, left/right and circle
or you could create a dummy box and link the Master biped to the box and select the box to make the model move on the planes

this is all from memory and if it doesnt work just follow the steps and use the good ol "push this button and see what it does technique"
good luck

Where can I find additional help/tutorials?
How do I attach a gun to a model in 3dsmax?
Move the gun into position in the guy's hand.

Select the gun then find the "select and link" button on the top (under FILE)

Click it. then click the gun. HOLD down the button after you click and drag over to the bone you want to attach to. When the bone is highlighted, let go.

How do I change the skin of a model when I used sgt_york's importer?
Look in your 3dmax folder and go to the "maps" folder. You see all those skins for models? (I'm sure you can figure out which goes with which leet_skin... etc.) either:
  1. Edit the current one or
  2. Rename the new one to the right name and delete the current one
Don't forget to back up your skin!
